Bertrand Russell Shows How to Respond to Fascists Who Want to Debate. “The emotional universes we inhabit are so distinct, and in deepest ways opposed, that nothing fruitful or sincere could ever emerge from association between us." [kottke.org]

I wrote this quickly at a bus stop and didn't realize it would go viral, or else I would have worded it better. But the point is that the media is too credulous about AI killing everyone in 10 years (how?) when climate change is killing people now and will only get worse (we know exactly how).

I resigned from ExxonMobil today. I spent the last three years doing fossil fuel extraction research at both BP and ExxonMobil. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing to maximize extraction while the window to act closes, and gambling with our lives. More below.

Sounds like a Future Me problem, not a Current Me problem

✨A fun little reminder for everyone✨: Future You is not magically less busy. Future You is actually just as busy as Current You + also hates Past You for all the extra stuff you signed them up for.

The first person to say the word "shit" on television, now angling to be the first person to have the word "cunt" in his obituary.

Just loving how John Cleese, now reduced to one of his own caricatures, rages about immigrants coming to the UK and failing to accept "our" culture, from his home in ... (checks notes) ... Nevis in the Caribbean.

In my first story with Kelley French for @notus.com, I spoke to the woman pictured in the Metro photo on July 4. She didn't know she went viral. Her family wants people to know their difficult reality. Please take some time with our story today www.notus.org/metro/viral-...

This is a prime example of why right-wing populism slides so easily into antisemitism. You need a populist framing of "the people" versus "the elites," but you can't frame the elites in strictly economic terms, or else you end up with leftism. Hence you need another way to define "elites."

Miriam Adelson is horrible, but she's horrible because she's a billionaire buying elections. Thomas Massie can't make a principled critique of all billionaires, because that would lead him to leftism, so he has to single out the "Tel Aviv born" ones. He knows exactly what he's doing here.

Long ago, dragons rose up against the gods. After a long war, the dragons were defeated. As punishment, the dragons were split, literally, and spread across the world. Their diminished selves seek their lost parts. Once the right nine lives of cats meet, they'll reform a dragon. #CrossRepost

Oh the irony. “the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is .... the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice; .... who constantly says: 'I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action'” Martin Luther King

Have you considered that the most famous political prisoners and campaigners had deep / lasting impact precisely bc they avoided such tactics? Christ's persecution & murder, and more recently Martin Luther King?

You are up to date.
