Account now restored but 90 min of censorship, & who knows how much algorithmic suppression, is proof positive that letting a few billionaires control what we see/say/know is - perhaps - not the best plan. California - these fuckers are trying to keep you from passing Prop 40 & tanking 41 & 42.

I can’t emphasize this enough — “AI” wasn’t born corrupt and toxic. For ~75 years, it was mathematicians and scientists doing interesting, thoughtful work and trying to solve problems, making only the usual human mistakes. What “AI” did to machine learning is as tragic as what it did to artists.

I spent a year watching school administrators do their jobs—and interviewing the students most impacted. I spoke to @thecut.com in a long-form Q&A about what I saw. Mainly, a system designed to protect perpetrators and punish victims in each and every case.

A real successful 1A day here on campus. Heavy hitters. Big student turnout. Engaged questions. My notes for the academic freedom panel is a sort of Cliff Notes of how I approach this thing. This is it. My whole talk.

Why Natalie-gate garnering more attention than usual? 1. Ossoff set terms of debate 2. MAGA-land took the bait & responded 3. Media feels freer to cover because "both sides" talking about it 4. Novelty - new character in MAGA Cinematic Universe 5. Hint of salacious - intrigue to uncover

Today is July 25th, often celebrated as the fall of Italian fascism. Mussolini passed draconian controls over pasta production which he considered decadent and overly reliant on foreign grain. Today, we celebrate his fall with a simple, defiant partisan dish: 1) Pasta 2) Creamy butter 3) Parmesan

A lot of people don’t realize the dust bowl wasn’t a natural phenomenon. It happened when agrobusiness interests dramatically transformed the plains without regard for drought, and created vicious dust storms that choked whole families to death. That’s what I think of when I read about data centers.

I’m interested in any political imagination for accountability. It has to be proactive & retroactive. It has to be spectacular. And, ideally, it would leave so many of them broke that it actually becomes a deterrent. Being poor is truly all they care about not because they don’t care about prison.

Feel like this is a pattern in public comments now. Overwhelming public opposition, but Trump administration will move ahead anyway (See also, Schedule F). This does not mean public comments are not important - far from it, it creates a case for overturning the rules in court.

Holy COW. Text analysis of comments on the OMB rule: overwhelming opposition, overwhelmingly not form letters. (But 9 in 10 comments supporting the rule ARE form responses, LOL) Whatever happens next, folks have stepped up.

The value system of the greater manosphere is not just anti-female, it's anti-human. Success is defined by physical perfection, wealth, and dominance--but it's not in pursuit of goals these straight guys actually want like love or sex with women, it's just to impress other vacuous men.

normalcleo.bsky.social reposted

The media’s language in coverage of sexual violence is so wild compared to any other subject matter. Instead of “it rained” they’re like “Several women allege that they received nonconsentual water upon their persons. We interviewed men they know, who confirmed that the women seemed damp.”

It is an undisputed and ubiquitously known fact that women and black people are considerably more likely to be working class, and yet every political pundit conveniently forgets this to try to appeal to the group that is most likely to NOT be working class

Bony 🦴 Skeletino 💀@notalegalrecord.net

if you only looked at the use of “working class” by people who opine on the democratic party’s “need to win back the working class” you would never suspect that every historically feminized profession is working-class

a rehabbed rapist, assuming such a thing exists, would not seek power or leadership because they would understand that they shouldn't be trusted with that. people who use power to abuse the powerless should not be allowed power, and the sign that one is reformed is that they don't seek it.

normalcleo.bsky.social reposted

I really don't think people need to try to reclaim the term "HR lady", which is just a bit of semi-clever propaganda trying to make it sound like opposing rape culture is some kind of corporate project. IME, big corp HR is if anything vacuously nonchalant about sex pests.

We will be reading and hearing a lot of things framed as,“…since COVID” in coming weeks. Most of it won’t mention the political and corporate backlash to massive (popular) public spending during COVID that got us here. But you and I will know.

normalcleo.bsky.social reposted

If roughing up a girlfriend and locking her in a room was a virile, authentic a rejection of “smoothgroined” “HR lady” politics, but a rape is too far, then what’s at stake is not a principled rejection of violence against women but a cynical assessment of how much violence a man can get away with.

this dynamic described by jenny racicot is, as i understand it, very common among progressive women in maine. they’ve been put in an impossible position and feel like they’re tanking platner’s campaign when in reality he did that on his own by being a violent and reckless person.

It's not that a Humanities education turns all its graduates into good people, it's that it arms good people with the skills and knowledge they need to understand and advocate for themselves, others, and society.

When I explain to peeps how much we do in research labs for how few $$, they simply don’t believe me. I once explained it to a famous person from Pixar, he looked me square in the eye and said “You mean all the cancer, vision, and Alzheimer’s grants work that way? You’ve gotta be %#ing kidding me!”

With this ruling, the birthright issue is not going away. The right hasn't really begun *organizing* around getting rid of the citizenship clause. Like Roe, this will be their fight for a generation. And if the Democrats just say "we won" and ignore it, like Roe, the Republicans will eventually win.

Incredible chart from @propublica.org. If you don’t follow enviro stuff closely, your instinct might be that the hold-your-nose solution (carbon capture from fossil fuels) would be the “pragmatic” one versus covering Earth in solar panels, which seems utopian. In fact it’s the opposite

The eleventh issue of Hammer & Hope is now live! We are besieged by a ruling class focused on maintaining white power. They represent one tradition in the United States. But there is another, found in 250 years of resistance, rebellion, and refusal. One that continues today — because it must.

This isn’t actually funny but I keep cackling to myself when people say we should pursue AI because it will tell us how to solve climate change. Like, we *know* how, we’re just not. ::burns so much fossil fuel to ask:: hey AI, what do? AI: “stop burning fossil fuel”

a thing i am also not saying here: "boy" is necessarily bad. boys are fun! i had fun being a boy! sometimes i have fun acting like a boy now! but it is masculinity without responsibility, which is both a reason why it's appealing and a reason why it's different from manhood

normalcleo.bsky.social reposted

i think boarding school teenage masculinity is a part of masculinity but not of manhood. we have to get away from the concept of the opposite of "man" being "woman." the opposite of "man" is "boy"
