Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

Just been such a revolution in my worldview to realise that people like Musk actually believe this, this isn't just the nonsense they feed the rubes so they can do coldly rational mercantile calculations in smokey rooms among themselves. No. It's rubes all the way down, they're that stupid.

i don't think we can come to a reasonable compromise with this

To be frank, this is approaching Charles I's attempt to arrest the Five Members in 1642 and we ought to treat it with the same gravity. And perhaps remind those involved how things turned out for Charles I after 'all his birds had flown.' How about we not restage this particular episode?

If basic human rights are predicated on whether someone committed crimes (see the "except as punishment for a crime" clause in the Thirteenth Amendment), then you create perverse incentives for those in power to create as many "criminals" out of the opposition as possible. Prisoners are humans.

One of Canada's advantages is that we know a lot about the US. We follow their news and politics, get their TV channels, travel there. But Americans know nothing about us. They don't understand our politics, history or values. They constantly misjudge us, but we understand them completely. #cdnpoli

Is it more likely that Talarico has been misleading voters for six years by his truly exemplary voting record on trans rights or that he was dissembling for 30 seconds once with a clear goal of misleading the sort of voters who watch Fox News Who can say

I do not think anyone has to leave twitter for bluesky but I do think everyone has to leave twitter

There are a lot of people who think their parents got their brains destroyed by Fox News, but somehow theyโ€™re not getting their brains destroyed by staying on Twitter.

the famous line about how michael caine treated the muppets as fellow actors and tim curry treated himself as a fellow muppet keeps running through my head we have a lot of brilliant actors, but how many of them can really pull off 'unhinged muppet' the way curry could? what a tremendous loss

As an aside, this is one reason "but humans are cooperative!" is a non-functioning argument here. You know what one of the most cooperative human activities is? War! If me and my 500 mates raid your village, we are cooperating fantastically in doing violence to you.

When the public broadly believes something foolish, it isn't wrong to note that fact, but you have an obligation in so noting it *that it is foolish* - yes, actually, the collapse of American democracy will impact you more than the time you had to sit through an HR training.

I would argue this belief in scientific racism is in fact one of the main animating beliefs of "elite centrism" as practiced today. Important to realize this if you're trying to understand what motivates these people and how to deal with them.

The really relevant thing here is, "when they respond to you, do they tell the truth?" We generally prefer fire departments that show up to ones that don't, but if the fire department showed up to your burning house, sprayed it with gasoline, tossed a bomb in and left, that's not better.

We deal with a lot of far-right parties whose politics we find awful. We have to contact their spoxes to report on them. Some of those spoxes respond, confirm info, get interviews etc. Others ignore us. On that narrow dimension, it is good for the public if they respond rather than ignore.

There are incredibly good and important conversations to have about what went right and wrong in those movements and none of them will be contained within a vague discourse that attempts to summarize a historical moment that hasn't even passed but whose backlash THIS DISCOURSE ITSELF is part of

Completely agree with this, and I think the sense that everything is scams is connected to the general feeling that the economy sucks

Katie Mack@astrokatie.com

I feel like an issue that would connect well with voters would be doing anything at all to slow the current progression toward "absolutely everything now is a scam"

I'm sympathetic to people who didn't realize how bad Trump was til 2018 or so, less sympathetic to those who didn't figure it out til Jan 6, and have nothing but contempt for people who support him after Jan 6.
