We don’t need to "save the planet." The planet will be fine. We need to save the conditions that allow human civilization to thrive. Let's be clear about the stakes.

Russia will start a war with the West. The deep militarisation of economy and more importantly the culture was so fundamental and irreversible, they have no choice but to try getting a return of that imvestment.

The surprise visit by the director of the Central Intelligence Agency to Moscow this week was to deliver a warning to Russia not to attack NATO countries, according to people briefed on the visit. www.wsj.com/politics/pol...

I saw a video of a small girl in a Russian orphanage these days. Her diaper was full and she hugged a stuffed bunny, all while trillions are funneled into the war. It was that moment when my general disdain for Putin, the propagandists, the apathetic masses, turned into pure, burning hatred.

The amusing contradiction in Russian propaganda is that they insist sanctions don’t hurt them and only hurt the West, yet they keep asking us to lift them. Which one is it?

Oppenheimer and The Odyssey are movies about men feeling guilt and shame over their life's crowning achievement bringing untold suffering into the world clearly this is an expression of Christopher Nolan's guilt for popularizing superhero movies with The Dark Knight

A FIFA referee has spent more time in federal custody for being Somali than anybody on epstein's list for raping kids.

I did the reasonable thing and bought more when the markets dipped, fully confident about a coming TACO. It's too early to say whether it was smart, but it looks like I just made money from betting against the US. This should really scare the US and the West as a whole.

My wife, who lived in Moscow until 2020, recently had a bit of nostalgia about her career (and spectacular earnings) in her company back there. This weekend, her former boss and company owner has been shot down by the Russian air defense in his light aircraft outside of Moscow.

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, 2,000 children abducted by Russia have been successfully returned to Ukraine. Specifically, 83 children returned home with the assistance of Qatar, and 19 through the mediation of Melania Trump.

So... it turns out the Russian army got scammed by some Chinese company, who sold them penguin costumes, promising those made the wearers invisible to drones. lol. lmao even.

May as well dive right in. Did you know that dogs in ancient Mesopotamia also refused to drop the ball? According to a Sumerian proverb, “The dog understands ‘Take it!’ It does not understand ‘Put it down!’” Source: cdli.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/artifacts/34...

So Trump's Greenland deal is basically maintaining the status quo, while the EU-US trade deal is put on hold. Europeans may think this was a good outcome, but in Trump's (and his followers) mind, he won big time after unthinkable provocation. He goes oit of this with "My art of the deal worked."

Pretty sure we wouldn't talk about Greenland if Denmark had nukes. We wouldn't talk about the war in Ukraine if Ukraine had kept their nukes. There's a lesson here that many countries are currently learning.

Putin: "I wish we had a multipolar world in which strong countries can bully the weak as they want."

The Russian Foreign Ministry commented on the boarding of the Russian tanker by US Forces and described it as "abnormal". Russia experienced a lot of "abnormal" situations the last 4 years, and almost all were not for the better in Russia.

3/ Some Europeans continue to put their faith in the US. American soldiers will refuse orders, American institutions will intervene, the midterms will save us, Democrats will return Greenland, and so on. The problem is that this mindset places Europe in a helpless position, with no agency of its own

People focus too much on the arrest of an illegitimate dictator that the whole civilized world named as such and not enough on the fact that the US explicitly stated they're trying to take over a country via a puppet regime.

If the president of Taiwan would be abducted, it would be a diplomatic crisis and the Taiwanese government will function largely unaffected. That is the difference between a democracy and a dictatorship.

Mehdi Hasan@mehdirhasan.bsky.social

If Xi Jinping invaded Taiwan right now, and toppled the president there, on what grounds would the United States object? Or have any credibility to say anything?

The new US National Security Strategy, in its predictable and characteristic ugliness, is a good occasion for Europe to finally let go of the time-consuming transatlantic crisis management efforts and start focusing on a proper and proactive own strategy instead.
