It is strange because I have only ever had good experiences with airbnbs and I genuinely wonder why. I am currently in one in Prague where the only check out request is turn off the AC which seems fair to me!

Mike Drucker@mikedrucker.bsky.social

Airbnb went from a cheap way to crash in a spare bedroom or rent a vacation house for a weekend and turned into "what if hotels openly hated you and acted like they were doing you a favor by letting you give them hundreds of dollars to stay there, and also it's more expensive"

I am very much enjoying watching this cat running loose among the pigeons, not least because for obvious reasons of being in a multi-generational mixed US-UK family I am intensely familiar with the false ideas Americans and Brits have about each other *and* the boring reality of life in both

WIRED@wired.com

The internet told them Europe was a social paradise. Turns out the trains are awful, the health care isn’t free, and people can be really mean.

The only real insight I can offer though is that Americans rightly think Europe (and the UK!) is more relaxed, but the ultimate thing to whether they settle nicely or not is whether they understand that 'relaxed' is quite often the other side of the coin from 'slow and inconvenient'

I'm not saying it would be better if they wanted to relish in hacking away at the dignity of trans people, but it is insane how they pretend that somehow this isn't even really changing anything.

It is funny this has emerged now as I recently went for drinks with someone adjacent to this world politically who pointed out to me that a lot of the shadow war stuff in Africa today isn't pointless if only because in a global war they will be surprisingly valuable as allies!

spherical-cow.bsky.social@spherical-cow.bsky.social

I regret to inform everyone that the chuds on the other site are engaged in an argument about whether modern Africa could defeat Europe of 1939 in a military confrontation, and the discourse is taking the predictable direction. @cthomasjamh.bsky.social

On these lines no one who got married before covid (myself included) should be giving dating advice, it comes off like boomers telling you to drop off paper CVs

Sasho Todorov@sashotodorov.bsky.social

Eh - people tend to severely underestimate just how badly dating apps (and also the emergent social norms that have forced most first moves onto dating apps) have fucked people up mentally.

It's annoying that the purported Pro Patriotic parties of the populist right in the West and to a significant extent foreign ploys by an adversarial regime designed to weaken their host nations, but it'll work in large part because the audience for this are stupid people disconnected from the facts.

Ukraine took out 2 huge data centers, and just like that--POOF! Pro-Trump/MAGA posts on US social media plummeted. Same happened to posts boosting Germany's far-right AfD. The primary function of those Bots is to boost groups Putin believes will destabilize the west. #USDemocracy #Voices4Victory

Interesting point here and makes me wonder if they'd even be capable of doing a non-nasty campaign today.

I would imagine the upper limit is probably 60-65% given that even in 1975, OUT got 33%. But yeah I do think people are underestimating the possibility that its just a blowout as Stay Out do a really nasty campaign that liberal, centrist or leftist brexiters just can't hold their noses to vote for

Increasingly fear one Western country is gonna have to collapse into an actual civil war/dictatorship for the rest to take the necessary steps to move away from the brink so many of us are rapidly approaching. Just pray the salutary example isn't us or the one nation that can destroy us all

I have a terrible fear that things are going to get very, very bad in Spain next year, including a big uptick in political violence. I so hope I am wrong.

When I first started learning Russian I came across a song that was bouncy and happy and that I listened to a good bit but understood none of. I listened to it again and my jaw dropped as I clocked it was all about overdosing on phenibut and imagining your mum finding you dying in the bathtub.

Whoever it is that unlocks good vibes again will reshape the world in dramatic ways we can't even begin to imagine right now.

I do wonder sometimes if certain people in Labour have ever met the modern working class. I know in reality they have, but it never feels like it. Working people are overwhelmingly literate now! Most know people of other races! Many have gay friends or family! Some worry about climate change!

Jack Bailey@jack-bailey.co.uk

I would welcome more diversity in politics, but a focus on material issues rooted in this sort of sentimentality about who counts as working class is a death sentence for Labour. As @jamesdaustin.bsky.social says, you can't hold your own voters in contempt then begrudge them for not voting for you.

Kind of grimly fascinating as always, coming from the former director of strategy to a Labour PM. There just isn't a future for a centre-left politics that is this hostile to pretty basic progressive values.

I mean I'm hardly either a Putin or Jones fan but this is just basically true? The change from Russians being excited about democracy to being excited for Putin a decade later runs right through the fact their economy collapsed in ways we can't quite imagine.

Darth Putin@darthputinkgb.bsky.social

This some advanced tankie "thought". Russia has a UNSC seat & world's largest amounts of land, gas, oil and NUKES. Russia also has no agency over our own actions and so cannot be held accountable and therefore must be excused and appeased.

In the mid-90s when powerful and influential people in our societies empowered the looting of the Russian economy Russia really did not have much power! Yes, this was an aberration and clearly not a long term situation, but it's ahistorical to say 'oh, well, Russia had a UNSC seat and nukes'

Now, I'm not really sure there was grand alternative insofar as the interventions to support Yeltsin in 1996 were probably necessary to keep out Zyuganov who was hardly a cuddly social democrat but equally we shouldn't lie to ourselves about the way Russian democracy was killed.

Not entirely sure, seems to me an awful lot of Reform voters have a particular person in mind they want to fuck over.

Sam Freedman@samfr.bsky.social

Even if they somehow won a majority it would be with a swathe of low income seats who would not be keen on slashing welfare and tax cuts for the wealthy.

I think it's absolutely mad that today there's a *national news story* about 400 oil platform workers losing their jobs, and the government being blamed. 25% of the UK TV industry lost their jobs in the last 4 years and we never hear a peep about it! Some jobs are 'real jobs' I guess.

I live in, oh, let’s say Waveney Valley. A lifelong Conservative and Remainer, I voted Green in 2024. I don’t like Zac Polanski, but my number one priority is stopping Reform. What could Ed Davey plausibly do to get my vote?

I've said it before but I'd go even further: Our success on this front is disproportionately to the credit of the Conservatives and the British right, and that is part of why it is so distressing they've abandoned this in the past couple of years.

Stephen Bush@stephenkb.bsky.social

A lot of Labour people visibly believe that a Labour government gives off tolerance particles, and therefore sitting mute is fine and good. The reality is that it took a cross party, whole society effort to make us, as Sunak says, the most successful multiethnic, multifaith democracy in the world:

The main reason Britain has (had?) been the most successful multicultural country isn't ultimately because people like me are better at being liberal than my peers in Denmark or Italy, but because British right-wingers have been markedly better on this issue than their peers.

It's gonna be hilarious when one of the main complaints of robotaxis is that they're too respectful of cyclists.

Jim Waterson@jim.londoncentric.media

I spend my week crossing london on a bike and increasingly that means cycling alongside Wayve/Waymo robotaxis. it’s uncomfortable. they give you so much space, don’t do a close pass while accelerating as lights go red. So unnerving if you cycle on assumption everyone’s mental and wants to kill you.

A campaign for *MSF* to be banned as a terrorist group (on the paper thin basis of claims about 2 past employees) is the product of the UK Govt being willing to divorce any meaningful conception of societal threat from its use of proscription powers. Govt needs to wake up to the madness of this:

This story is a perfect example of how broken reporting of the mobs roaming Britain's streets now is - and the political response. What would have been the appropriate response if this hadn't been a sports team? Trash the hotel? Force them out into the street? What about other people staying there?
