Listening to a report about Google chopping down a quarter of a million trees in Finland to build a data centre while washing out yoghurt pots for the recycling

My prediction is infinite money glitch with a major systemic risk bank, or major pension provider destroyed (vanguard has 13trn in assets) triggering massive bank runs, financial meltdown

Does anyone else finding novel editing akin to crossword puzzles? Like you're happy with the MEANING of the sentence, but how do you make it shorter and snappier (and then the other question - is that better than your rambling draft version?)

Amy Acton's brother slams Vivek Ramaswamy featuring her estranged mother in a campaign ad. "This desperate, disgusting attack reveals exactly who Vivek Ramaswamy is at his core – a pathetic excuse for a man who is willing to hurt anyone as long as it gets him what he wants."

Good morning! Just jumping on to say you can now watch the entirety of 1980 anthology series Hammer House of Horror for free on ITVX. Go straight to 'The House that Bled to Death' and 'The Two Faces of Evil' 👌...

Re the shortest job tenure thing, I had a job where I noped out of IN THE INTERVIEW. The interview started with me waiting for them to remove a stained mattress from bosses office, then when I walked in his first line was “I know what you’ve probably heard, but NOTHING we do here is illegal”

This was for a TV job, father and son production company running a household name tv franchise in the UK, basically 95% of tv freelancers have a story about them. Often female directors get “my son, still single. Are you single?????”

I had 2 jobs I quit on the first day, both university era jobs; one selling overpriced family photographs at s booth in Asda, one ‘selling’ government backed insulation loans or something door to door. Quit both without taking a cheque when I realised they were scams. bsky.app/profile/inte...

my horrid little opinion is that I believe this to be most true when it comes to British pastry items, obviously a warm, huge, preposterously expensive sausage roll from a wanky pub made out of poncy pork is a million times better than a Greggs one, don't lie to me, be serious

I asked you your favourite biscuit and you said 'oh a hob nob' or 'digestive' or 'bourbon' and you thought it would make me think you authentic and real but you should have said 'the poshest ones I can find for the posh ones are the best' as that is the truth you hide and now I know you are a coward

I am semi convinced the screen time that hurts children most isn't their own screen use, it's that of their parents, gripped by Tiktok or texting away when they could be interacting with their kids

Philip Gourevitch@pgourevitch.bsky.social

If we make screens the villain, then we let the people who control children’s health care — Congress, insurers and health systems — off the hook for the fact that half of American children with a treatable mental illness get no treatment at all.” www.nytimes.com/2026/10/09/o...

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

Also, I know it’s in the source material but man, setting him up as an unreconstructed yankee hating confederate landed so badly! Like imagine he’s an SS man on the run, that’s the vibe it gives.

You know ... I can't fathom a masculinity with out affection and gentleness. Dads sleeping babies, grandpas playing with cats, men cooking for their family. I love it!

This sort of thing was always quite theoretical when I used to cover tech, but more IOT devices and more automated hacking tools mean it’s more and more real bsky.app/profile/fayt...

In France, hundreds of Intermarché and Coopérative U supermarkets were hit by a cyberattack on their refrigerators last night in which hackers “managed to remotely trigger forced de-icing”, AFP reports. The issue is forcing many stores to throw away their fresh and frozen goods.

Its cool how in the opening scene of The Desolation of Smaug, Gandalf gives Thorin Oakenshield a flyer for a local black metal show but Thorin is like: "No thanks, those guys are posers, they haven't desecrated any barrows and use way too much synth for my taste."

Your call on whether it’s the establishment’s insane loathing of air conditioning or the more believable bent contractors cutting corners as the root cause - but the real story here is the cover-up. The institution just didn’t want to admit it. bsky.app/profile/micr...

Dr Christine Peters@microlabdoc.bsky.social

This has been a hard story for journalists to cover - complex inter layering of science, national building standards, patient loss, staff fear, balancing public right to know and accusations of undermining confidence. Add to that political high stakes, police inquiries. But lessons need outing.

The line about how the lesson learned from the first infections and inquiry was “don’t write anything down” is so damning about the internal culture; the bullying the infection control doctors received (for: trying to control infections) is vile.

Have done much better this week; combination of fixing a specific character voice and shorter chapters has got me closer to my original timeline. That and a bunch of late nights! Now 19 chapters of this draft done (out of 48). bsky.app/profile/will...

Relatively pleased with Novel #2 progress. Have been deep in the fourth draft for two weeks, have undershot my target of a chapter a day (ludicrously ambitious) but have managed to touch the book every day and now have 8 chapters I'm happy to send to beta readers (out of 50 or so)

The catastrophic event is likely going to be someone using AI to hack every previously unhackable bit of tech that we now rely on for society to function, like banking, government and military. Kind of what happens when you tell people "It doesn't matter if the tech does bad stuff bc it makes money"
