How come people in BlueSky don't talk about what has been happening in Indonesia for months now?! More than 300k people have acute respiratory infections. The haze even reached my city in the Philippines. That's how terrible it is. www.bbc.com/news/videos/...

Many decades ago Olds and Milner found lateral septum stimulation to be extremely reinforcing. In our latest preprint we explore why. Check it out and let us know what you think www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

biorxiv.orgProjection populations form a dorsoventral gradient of reward representations in the lateral septumSeveral decades ago, the septal region was identified as the most dependable location of intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS) in the brain, but the neural substrates that mediate septal self-stimulation are still unknown. One part of the septal region, the lateral septum (LS), contributes to a number of motivated behaviors and may promote reward-seeking. However, the LS contains different anatomical subregions, complicating the characterization of its reward representations. We examine the responses of LS neurons along its dorsoventral axis using cellular resolution calcium imaging during an operant assay. We find that a greater proportion of neurons are excited in response to sucrose reward in the dorsal LS, while a greater proportion are inhibited in response to sucrose reward in the ventral LS. Additionally, we identify two distinct LS projection populations, one to the nucleus accumbens (NAc) and another to the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), which are located in the dorsal and ventral regions of the LS, respectively. These two projection populations also have opposing reward responses and their corresponding optogenetic manipulation supports ICSS. These findings demonstrate how LS projection populations contribute to its functional heterogeneity, especially as it pertains to reward-seeking behavior. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest. The National Science Foundation, one of the largest funders of research in the U.S., has been rocked by firings and budget cuts during the second Trump administration. Now, it is reportedly set to lose its leader at the end of the year sciam.com/article/nati...

sciam.comNational Science Foundation leader Brian Stone to retire with no clear replacement in sightPresident Donald Trump's nominee to replace Stone, James O'Neill, has yet to have a confirmation hearing in the senate, leaving the future leadership of the NSF unclear

Perhaps it's because I came to neuroscience from philosophy, but I see that many neuroscientists see consciousness as a substance, state, process, etc., a singular property. However, I've always suspected the late Daniel Dennett might have been correct to call it a bag of tricks.

Why not be a protein-coding RNA and also regulate some gene expression on the side?

Philip Ball@philipcball.bsky.social

This is a truly startling paper. It shows that mRNA can perform regulatory functions *in addition to* its role in encoding a protein. In other words, the distinction between protein-coding RNA and noncoding regulatory RNA is fuzzy. /1 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
