Remember the early days of Covid when people were speculating on N95 masks and hand sanitizer by buying up the scarce supply and selling it for inflated prices; but then we made so many masks and so much hand sanitizer that you could get them super cheap? We could do that for housing if we wanted.

New: "The State Department will issue visas to Flavio Bolsanaro and his family and allow them entry into the United States," per a senior State Department official

tbh I think a good place to start is telling the prediction markets of which 99% of their trading volume is sports betting that actually they are casinos and not financial organizations selling contracts

i don't think anyone should run explicitly on banning online gambling but i do think that a democratic-led government should just quietly take steps to undermine the industry and create an inhospitable regulatory environment

This is so backwards. Talk radio uses gutter racism, misogyny, et al to scare idiots into voting Republican *despite* the party’s actual policies, which even voters don’t believe are real when they’re described.

Matthew Sheffield@matthew.flux.community

Yep. People can only know the politics that is presented to them. And candidate speeches never reach most people. And even if they did, a lot of people would struggle to understand them. Talk radio and podcasts spend hours on a daily basis patiently explaining Republican party views. It works.

The New York Times wrote articles that were like "the impossible-to-characterize elusive politics of Elon Musk / he's lost interest in politics" right before he became *literally the largest GOP donor in history* the next election cycle. Twice. Two times!

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

This would be the most any person has donated in any election cycle. And #2 is also Musk, in 2024.

Right, the problem was that it showed this correspondent was (1) biased & bigoted and (2) unable to understand what had actually transpired at the event, both of which are disqualifying for a reporter.

Steve Vladeck@stevevladeck.bsky.social

Yeah, the problem with the tweet *wasn’t* that it violated “CBS News standards.”

Ted Cruz is getting absolutely destroyed in the comments, but I'd like reporters to ask Ted Cruz if he's ever disavowed Christian terrorists like Eric Robert Rudolph, Robert Dear, Tim McVeigh.

when a side defects without consequence you are now playing a fundamentally rigged game and the only way to fix it is to ensure defectors are punished in such a way that they learn there are consequences to all their choices

Mike Masnick@masnick.com

Yes, it sucks that the No Kings insta was suspended (though I still think it was likely an automated tripwire, rather than deliberate). But falling back into "well we have to politically punish media execs to get better results" doesn't fix anything.

a significant amount of openai's reckless bullshit has been with unreleased models. a safety story that's all about what the public gets to access is one that's unresponsive to the real and present danger of corporate unaccountability

whenever trump's DOJ has to go in front of a judge to get yelled at, every lawyer on here is like "omg i've NEVER seen a judge this mad, if a judge yelled at me like this i'd immediately commit seppeku," and then at the end of the hearing the judge is like "ok no sanctions just don't do it again"

American small business owners largely see themselves as lower-level rentiers in a quasi-feudal economy as opposed to service providers in a competitive market economy, and part of that means not having to actually be competent at providing services

Dangubiti@dangubiti.bsky.social

I’ve lost track of how many small business owners in DC are shocked that their customers respond extremely negatively to their public tweets supporting Trump

cool that MLB owners are gonna do a lockout and cancel part of the season next year purportedly for "if we don't crush player salaries, small markets can't compete!!" when 3 of the final 4 teams this year are Tampa, Cleveland and Milwaukee.

Started actually using the tea pot a friend got me a year or two ago and it's pretty good Idk if the loose leaf is better than some of the bags that I have but it's not bad either & its a lot of tea

🚨 Ken Paxton has taken nearly 1,000 trips with a taxpayer-funded state police security detail since becoming Texas attorney general in 2015. 🔹The bill so far: $3.3 million. 🔹 An investigation could tie only 138 of those trips, and $553,000 of that cost, to state business. @micaherfan.com

This stuff also makes such a mockery of the people who did work very hard to get rid of the death penalty in blue states. Dems are not perfect, but they're generally moveable on these issues, and many Dems did move because people worked hard to make them move. Endless hopeless cynicism is useless.

just to emphasize what's happening here: BMW (a company that used slave labor under the Nazis) refused to provide an official vehicle to the ultra right-wing AfD party, which is now asking Elon Musk to provide a Tesla instead Tesla literally becoming the Nazi car brand

Jaap Burger@jaapburger.eu

The party is now turning to the man who has been the go-to person for those suffering from spontaneous contractions of the right arm, and who has already provided them with strong support in recent years.
