There will be many specific reasons for these declines - chemicals, changing farming practices, climate change, insect populations, disease - but over all its not that complex. We extract too much, we pollute too much, we are too careless and leave too little. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

as a satire on so-called late stage capitalism how could one beat investors pouring a trillion into a company offering to wipe out humankind

Fairest way to decide how Manchester City should be punished is to open it to a national citizens panel. All ideas can be considered and we can all vote on the top 16. I’d like to pitch in “no relegation but they have to play every game for 5 years without football boots on”

I'm a few days late to this, but it's worth noting as amid all the years of deeply weird discourse about low-traffic neighbourhoods this is perhaps the most unhinged thing I've ever seen. [Plus: they're not "Sadiq Khan's LTNs". They're done by councils.]

I think it's absolutely mad that today there's a *national news story* about 400 oil platform workers losing their jobs, and the government being blamed. 25% of the UK TV industry lost their jobs in the last 4 years and we never hear a peep about it! Some jobs are 'real jobs' I guess.

Feel I should get invited on more podcasts. I am not hugely guarded and am likely to say whatever. I will either be tremendously interested and upbeat, or crushingly depressed, but either way I give good content.

Neoliberalism in a nutshell. UEFA on FIFA's proposal: “The moment external investors acquire ownership interests ... football changes forever. Commercial return becomes a permanent obligation. ... Every decision is no longer driven by what best serves the game, but by what best serves shareholders.”

She hints at what her plan will entail - nature, nuclear, flood defences, markets and innovation - but all this is already being done. If free markets and innovation (without carbon pricing) worked as an adequate answer on their own to the climate crisis the problem would be solved already.

One billion plastic pellets about to go up the gullets of fish off the coast of England. A Martian would ask: I mean someone’s going to prison for this, right? Right?

Whoever designed this Times front page has a dark and wicked sense of ironic humour. Hyper-sensitivity to predictable technical challenges of energy transition. Meanwhile, Europe burns.

It's driving me insane. The govt spends £1.4 trillion a year. Borrowing estimates are often by tens of billions over a year. But we're supposed to imagine money is budgeted to the last penny.

Karl Whelan@karlwhelan.bsky.social

Christ almighty. The British obsession with itemized “pay fors” for everything is insane. This is just really not how fiscal policy or government works anywhere functional.

New episode of YOUR BRAIN ON CLIMATE may come in very useful this week. Why is elite politics turning against ‘net zero’? @beccam-c.bsky.social tells me all about it - including what the UK’s fracturing consensus on climate action reveals about how we form our views about big abstract concepts.

Pedro Porro would be only the 11th of this very specific type of World Cup winner …what is it?

Over 85% Britons say that climate change is responsible - strikingly this extends even across more socially conservative segments more sceptical about things like net-zero. More broadly 66% of Brits are worried about climate change.

There's gonna be a new PM. What he needs is an op-ed telling him what to do, of which there's no doubt a lamentable absence. Here's the time-hallowed method for creating one: 1. Set out the problem cleanly, as if the PM had literally no idea that growth, the cost of living and deficit matter. 1/
