Exactly right. It's why the idea of "UK PLC" was so grotesque - as if a nation was just a limited company, that could be wound up, taken over, merged or dissolved, with no roots in the past and no responsibility to the future.

Prem Sikka@premnsikka.bsky.social

Politicians should look at the UK economy as a CEO would, says Lloyds Bank CEO From a bank that hasn't investigated HBOS frauds. No thank you. Companies enrich shareholders. Countries have entirely different purpose, governance, accountability. Must not be treated as corporations. archive.ph/lj45s

💯The case for democracy is not that voters are always right, or wise, or good. It's that they can correct their mistakes. That's why it's so dangerous to have billionaires controlling the media or regulating the flow of information. It shuts down the immune system of democracy.

Rob Ford@robfordmancs.bsky.social

I was having conversations with journalists just a few months ago about whether democracy was doomed. Look at this year: Orban defeated. Vukic defeated. Bolsonaro Jr defeated. Trump heading to likely defeat in midterms. That’s the beauty of democracy. Voters can respond. Don’t count it out yet.

This is literally the end of the rule of law. If a President can pardon people committing crimes on his behalf - and the Supreme Court says he himself can't be prosecuted for crimes committed as part of his job - then the government becomes a lawless entity able to violate our rights without limit.

The fact that the president's doctors are giving him the dementia test over and over again -- tracking his decline, most likely -- and that the president keeps bragging about having to take that test should be a five-alarm fire.

“Look in the mirror, 🇺🇸”. No matter how many times you say “this is not who we are as a country”; right now it IS. 🇺🇸 has twice elected a corrupt, selfish bully who abandons allies, deals with enemies, rejects science and medicine, attacks other countries, harms the vulnerable and pardons criminals.

Private health parasitises the NHS. It tends not to have A&Es and Intensive Care Units because they are expensive/unprofitable. For real emergencies and for dumping of unprofitable patients, it exploits the NHS. In the former case, the extra time getting private patients to the NHS is a big risk.

Here is why getting "bogged down" is actually a superpower: They are climate heroes: Peatlands cover only 3% of the earth's land but store more carbon than all the world's forest biomass combined. Keeping them intact is one of our best defenses against climate change. 2/
