"the author of that harry potter story leads an insane cult that's captured much of the media in this country" is a different person if you're in the UK or the US

what this shows is that democrats overwhelmingly feel that the party is directionless and lacks a real agenda. Right-leaning democrats equate this with a vapid left-wing fixation on identity politics even as the dem establishment have been consistently distancing themselves from idpol for years. 1/

Josh Marshall@joshtpm.bsky.social

Among many other things this is a good illustration of the necessity of untethering ideology and "fight" in intra-Democratic battles. The party is very united on fight, very divided on ideology. You unite on fight, let different constituencies/states find their center of gravity on ideology.

However, since they have failed to move toward anything else, people still see them as the party of identity discourse. They stop defending trans people and get accused of being pro-trans anyway, because the republicans are making a case for active persecution while dems make a case for nothing. 2/

When you compete with the radical right by moving toward the centre, you end up with a party that can't make a case for itself. That's why there's no future in the centre. 3/3

The GPU is not your enemy. The GPU was intended to channel magic smoke into the drawing of triangles, the virtuous shape. Evil men devised wicked shapes that should never have been drawn, and have used their influence to hoard the GPUs and twist the magic smoke toward the shape of their perversions.

the idea of personal virtue is kind of right-wing coded & it's easy to dismiss it on the grounds that our problems have societal (rather than interpersonal) roots. but as individuals, we don't have the power to change society. We do have the power to hurt each other. We have to take that seriously.

Sarah Z@sarahz.bsky.social

I think it's really critical to take a hardline no on lolcowing even when it's someone you actively dislike; the only stance that holds has to be target-independent since sincerity of belief and just deserts aren't good benchmarks on their own. There's no justified use of the Torment Nexus, y'know?

THIS IS WHAT SAM ALTMAN WANTS TO TAKE FROM YOU

Edmond Tran@edmondtran.bsky.social

We cannot and should not let generative AI take away these tiny, insignificant, but probably fun as hell jobs from artists

The discomfort of wanting to make something but not knowing what is super important. It drives you out into the world to discover inspiration, and inward to discover what you care about. If you numb yourself to this by letting AI decide, you'll never fulfill your potential.

Julian Sanchez@normative.bsky.social

One thing AI has revealed is that there are a whole lot of people who have neither interesting ideas nor the talent to express them, and apparently not even any real will or desire to cultvate either of these things… but still for some reason desperately want to be regarded as artists.

oh god not the quantum microtubule consciousness theory that's the 20th-century version of Descartes thinking the soul was linked to the brain via the pineal gland it's just an ad-hoc defence of dualism grounded in quantum mysticism

one of the consequences of AI is deskilling: people are losing their ability to discover art that interests them. They need AI to satisfy their needs effortlessly, and that's just not what being human is like. No robot can develop taste in music for you

DrawPlayDave@thedrawplay.com

I cannot stop laughing. This is so indicative of what's wrong with these AI people and how they view art He ran into a wall where the "make art" button wasn't satisfying because it wasn't actually making good enough art, and instead of trying new things he just requests a stronger button

I think the central premise that young men searching for information on how to have a sex life will invariably encounter just an absolute avalanche of right wing misogyny peddlers and very little actual helpful advice is a genuine problem.

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

Everyone is yelling at Ian about this but the article is good and this is a real problem! If you are a straight guy trying to get laid 99% of the advice you come across will be right wing-coded.

me when I'm bad at my job and I keep losing elections: "it's the posters' fault. They're posting about celebrities all wrong." man, have you seen the shit Republicans post?

Joe Walsh@walshfreedom.bsky.social

A message I just got from a buddy of mine, who’s a long time Democratic Party campaign consultant: “This Sydney Sweeney thing is the kind of thing that turns men away from our party. It’s why men think our party is weak & insane.” My response to him? “Fuck yea it is. You are exactly right.”

i think about this all the time. what has our society done to its men? fucked up.

NYU canceled a planned speech by the former president of Doctors Without Borders because she planned to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and cuts to US AID. This is what actual campus censorship looks like.

ctvnews.ca‘Climate of fear’: Montreal doctor says NYU cancelled her presentationA Montreal doctor says her presentation at NYU was abruptly cancelled and believes the university did so out of fear of being pressured by the Donald Trump administration.

I've had a low opinion of NYT for a while, but I think this is the most condemning thing I've ever seen from them. If I were an editor and I saw this on my desk, I'd bury the story and cover it up. But they're proud of it.

Re-sharing with alt text. This is so deeply repugnant. The NYT has utterly failed us when it comes to political coverage. Follow independent and local media/journalists instead. Starter packs to follow.

this is what a lot of tech people used to be like 😭 it bums me out that younger people probably have no conception of the internet ever being this way

after days of grifters and con men at CES we stumbled upon the booth for VLC. they were all dressed as wizards and told us, "we have nothing to sell, we just decided to show up". i told them I'd been using their software to pirate media for 15 years and they said "keep doing that"

you know how a friendship with a pet dog can be deeply life-affirming because you love each other despite not speaking the same language? i think this disgusts me so much because it's the opposite. a machine that adopts the guise of companionship without even liking you. man's worst friend.

i see the intuitive appeal of the idea that voting for Dems is forfeiting your leverage, but i think that misunderstands how power is built in practice. the most powerful demographic in American politics is white evangelicals, and they got there through relentless engagement with electoral politics

i love when people get shocked that some opinions are unacceptable. Yeah, sorry. People don't tend to respond to abhorrent ideas civilly.

Naomi Cunningham@naomicunningham.bsky.social

So this site turns out not to be as civil as all that, if you express a forbidden opinion. But on the up-side, it’s impressive how many people here can curse in Richard Adams’ rabbit language.
