Counter-point: I watched a DVD of American Dreamz last night that made me wish for all of these things.

This, for people who don't follow US soccer, is the coach of the Seattle Sounders donating to the GoFundMe of the fields director at Starfire Sports (where the Sounders used to train), who was just abducted by ICE.

A real one.

YIKES

Jason Kint@kint.bsky.social

Eye popping. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft. Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1

Sports games are events. You can go and have a good time even if you don't know who's playing Sports fandom is storytelling. It's caring about who's playing and what it all means so you can talk to friends and your barber about it MLS thinks it's in the first business, not the second

Maybe I’m naive, but it’s crazy to think there’s an alternate universe where DR Congo’s 2026 World Cup side features the veteran Steve Zakuani. #sounders #worldcup

I can swear to you right now, I’ve boycotted companies for pettier reasons. Every company advertising during hydration breaks is on my list.

Tom Bogert@tombogert.bsky.social

phew thank god fifa insisted for hydration breaks at every game so this incredible japan - netherlands second half can be paused for a water break in an indoor stadium

Thank you #WorldCup gods for scheduling the USA game right after my indoor league game. Truly, no better people to be watching that game with, and no better time than with post-game beers.

do you want to feel like you're doing drugs without actually doing drugs, just look at this map

Simon Kuestenmacher@simongerman600.bsky.social

This map shows where the 48 teams partaking in the FIFA World Cup 2026 will be based. 🇲🇽🇺🇸🇨🇦 Pretty sure that Argentina, England, and the Netherlands have an unfair advantage by being based in Kansas: heaps fewer distractions than elsewhere 😉

My mayor 😭

Douglas Reyes-CeroÑ@dreyesceron.bsky.social

We got The Mayor Himself @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social in the @cloud9goth.bsky.social Gotham FC supporters section, everyone coming to say hi to him and getting shouted out on the NWSL broadcast

We need to bring handshake wagers back. Too many people feeling comfortable making dumb claims in the open. Make them put $10 on it. Do it in front of their spouse and kids.

RFK Jr: "A Democratic senator claimed it's mathematically impossible to have a drug drop by 600%. I said, 'Well, if the drug was $100 and it raises to $600, that would be a 600% rise. If it drops from $600 to $100, that's a 600% savings.'" Trump: "Right"

Between this and the lessons coming out of Hungary, Trump’s plan absolutely has to be voter repression.

I asked myself "how do golf courses possibly afford property taxes" so I looked it up and came away convinced we could virtually eliminate the entire sport by simply removing several dumb tax loopholes

At this point, it’s hard to feel bad for anyone doing business with an entity that has been blatant about it’s shady practices for years. But this is messed up.

Henry Bushnell@henrybushnell.bsky.social

New (seriously): FIFA has now created an extra ticket category to sell "front" row World Cup seats for double the price of Category 1 tickets — which supposedly could’ve yielded “front” row seats when bought months ago. Fans feel deceived. More @theathletic.com: www.nytimes.com/athletic/718...

It’s April 2026 and there isn’t a single aspect of the men’s World Cup that sparks joy. The marketing of the tournament, the USMNT, the visiting fans… at best, it’s flat. At worst, it’s dire. Feels like Brazil ‘14 was the last time it felt like what it is (a game) and not a tool for politicians.

When you know you can’t win fair elections, you do whatever you can to manipulate voter turnout & election results. US authoritarianism continues.

Democracy Docket@democracydocket.com

BREAKING: Republican lawmakers unveil the Make Elections Great Again Act — a new bill that would impose the most extreme federal voting restrictions in history. The measure would go beyond the SAVE Act by imposing strict voter ID to vote, mandating voter roll purges, banning mail voting and more.

Anyone who’s ever worked for a consumer product Fortune 500 company understands this: these businesses live in a weird bubble, where their customers are supposedly spending every moment thinking about their product.

THREAD. Over many years, we became the national experts in fighting unconstitutional pretrial detention--all the more urgent because authoritarians need detention without process. But something wild just happened in one of our habeas cases: a DA used made up cases and citations.

Turning this off removes all the different inboxes and sorting and labels and you can't use them unless you turn AI back on. I am seething a little that I'm being forced to comply with a technology I do not want to be using.

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features." There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

World Cup games are not worth it. Support your local bar/pub. Go watch local teams. Tell FIFA to kick rocks.

FIFA has raised ticket prices for dozens of 2026 World Cup games, in some cases by more than 20%. Most upper-deck tickets to the World Cup final are now $5,055 or $3,450. Increases for two of three USMNT games. Details @theathletic.com:
