Name a non-LOTR character who is a cool and good person but would nevertheless set land speed records for getting fucked up by the One Ring.

drilling for more gas then telling us to stockpile because of the climate crisis is like digging a deeper and deeper hole because you know a guy who sells long ladders

Very cool!

When Grammy-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens begins playing “Old Corn Liquor,” a traditional Black American folk tune, acclaimed Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man recognizes similarities to Chinese pentatonic music and spontaneously joins in. The joy on their faces says it all.

Depressingly, I agree — fascism can't be forever eliminated, cos we can all be arseholes! But we can neuter the conditions it needs to metastasise (inequality, grievance, anger, xenophobia, corruption etc etc).

"Online Rent-a-Sage" Bret Devereaux@bretdevereaux.bsky.social

I want to expand on this in a short thread. Fascism sucks. It is also not going away: it is an effectively permanent part of modern representative politics because it is an effectively permanent part of human nature. We have to be prepared to push back against it, basically forever.

Russia has tried to take Ukraine's independence away by force for years. It has failed. Ukraine is still here. Still free. Still fighting.

'The UK only produces 1% of emissions, so why should we do anything?' As this teacher says, just turn the analogy to dog poo or litter.

Simon Oldridge@sioldridge.bsky.social

Fed up with people shirking responsibility by arguing that the UK causes just 1% of emissions? Here are two fantastic analogies from a primary school teacher, Mark in Coventry, who called Sheila Fogerty on @lbc.co.uk - one involving dog poo 😆 Other arguments here: www.nebriefing.org/mp-dialogue

I know you're not allowed to say this during the current debate, but the reason the left dominates academics, art, comedy, and music is that the right has stupid, discredited ideas, they're not funny, and dull resentment does not make for good art. No grand conspiracy required.

Sounds very encouraging. I just hope it can be easily scaled to municipal-supporting size!

I’ve been waiting for this announcement for bloody years! Solar desalination was always going to be increasingly important, but whilst existing methods produce harmful brine this method gives useful materials like LITHIUM and other salts. Do this. A lot. Now. www.rochester.edu/newscenter/w...

1. London Underground station flooding has reportedly been reduced by around 90% thanks to a group of engineers: beavers. After conservationists reintroduced a family of beavers into a nearby city park, the animals built dams and restored wetlands that now absorb and slow floodwater naturally.

A great explanation here of why we need industrial solar, why it's not bad for experienced private companies to build it...and why some NIMBY green supporters are being 'time to cut off this evil nose; there you go face!'

America: You need to re-learn that corruption is real, politics attracts it, and that you need to stamp that shit out like you weigh 300 pounds and wear hobnail boots. And that includes every arsesling paid or motivated to overlook it.

This is an important point to remember every time some yahoo politician who wants to defund the NSF reads the title of a grant in dumbstruck tones: "They're studying the venom of Gila monsters? What? Who's *that* for?" All of us, Gomer. It's how science actually works.

Sam Wang@samwang.bsky.social

Don’t forget the basic research that made it all possible. Ozempuc originally comes from discoveries from Gila monster venom. Let’s stop the attacks on basic research, and enable the discoveries of the future. SamForNJ.org

Very Ukrainian accent: "Oh Mr Vance, is it hard to negotiate peace? Is it difficult to come to a deal when both sides have fundamentally irreconcilable positions on key issues? Does not being able to trust your counterparty make things tricky? Why do you hate peace, Mr Vance?"

A long, but quite delightful, read, on Banksy, who he probably is, and how Massive Attack is involved.

Robert Smith@bondhack.ft.com

I'd normally be annoyed at Reuters for doing a fake out where they focus on Rob from Massive Attack, before explaining that Banksy is actually the guy the Daily Mail named years ago, but it's so well written and richly reported I didn't care www.reuters.com/investigates...

Great thread. It's in nobody's economic or security interests, including the US's, for it to extort and invade its allies!

1/ Something which I don't think gets articulated clearly often enough is that a system where countries generally respect international sovereignty and territorial integrity is not pure charity or morality by the United States, but in its direct interests. Despite it being the strongest bear.
