American polling lines are another version of this right? Like it's never taken me more than 10 minutes to vote, and we know who has won the same night, despite hand counting every ballot.

👀 😳 👀

A system that moves by sea and can do intercepts? So a warship then? Do the navy know they are getting 10bn for new ships?

Stephen Bush@stephenkb.bsky.social

Call me old-fashioned, but I just think that if you are announcing £10bn of spending, then if the Shadow Treasury team and the leader's office are doing their jobs properly, the leader should have clearer answers to these questions:

Ok this is great.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

These idiots are going to get someone killed. From the sound of it there might be enough to prosecute here. The idea of boats having to turn off AIS, which these days is a vital safety system, and weilding knives around inflatables with people in.... The authorities cannot let this roll on.

5. After around 30 hours at sea, the dinghy was intercepted by the RNLI and those on board transferred to two lifeboats. Two lifeboat personnel tried to secure the empty dinghy. Thomas yelled abuse and knifed the dinghy to deflate it - with a rescuer still on board.

ICYMI: my post on the sheer unhealthiness and groupthink of the culture around AI, "a community of would-be-martyrs, enmeshed in a deep paranoid fantasy that they alone can stave off the end of the world."

Multiple staff at the UK’s AI Safety Institute, the global leader in the independent testing of frontier AI models, have been signed off work with stress and are undergoing counselling, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

..so the problem here is not that Ministers say there are "legitmate concerns" about immigration. It's that Ministers don't come out & say "but some so-called concerns, expressed both by so-called protestors and the media, are frankly just xenophobia and racism, and they should have no place here"

This is exactly it I don't want to live forever but I would *love* to know what happens.

Stephen Bush@stephenkb.bsky.social

I wouldn’t wish to live forever, but I would really like to be able to spend a week in the British Library right before it sinks beneath the waves/the sun expands to destroy it/whatever just to see how it all works out.

He'll require a minister for DCMS for this so that's out.

Andy Burnham wants to bring fan ownership back to the heart of sport. As reported by Sky News, the Prime Minister is looking to expand support for fan-owned sports clubs. Our latest report set out how fans and communities could have a bigger stake and say.

If you're in government watching criminal-led blackshirt thugs in balaclavas wage war on the RNLI and you're hedging your bets because you're not sure who the majority of the country will side with, why do you even want to be in government? Why would you WANT to lead people you think so little of?

Unexpectedly intervened in a suicide attempt off a bridge in Cork, which was unexpected but everyone is fine and clean forgot to take a picture of the well deserved Guinness #4. Was very handy to be hanging out with a team of therapists who were great but could have used a security professional

Cos of my event work I spend a lot of time holding up decibel meters to things and some of the "how can the resident possibly be expected to live through this" videos and the readings they are getting are equivalent to living next to a normal road.

You can try to rationalize it all you want, but the core of anti-data-center politics is a shared belief that data centers are imbued with some kind of [Unspecified Badness] such that no one should want to be around them. People fill in the blank with whatever makes sense to them.

I think it's worse actually because in 2003 you had to go out of your way to say not all Muslims, Islam compatible with life in a democracy, just these extremists etc. and now they don't bother.

Nathan Goldwag@goldwagnathan.bsky.social

There is something kind of bleakly funny about how much time and ink was spilled about how we'd moved past the GWOT and Forever Wars and come to terms with our mistakes and entered a new phase of politics and then every time a Muslim shows appears on TV the media snaps back to 2003 instantly.

Taffy Osborne reposted

Large portions of the data center backlash are based on moral panic, but the the tech right VC types upset by it are very funny considering how gleeful they were about the demise of ‘legacy’ media. What’s that? You’re missing epistemic gatekeepers who would place complex facts in context? Tough shit

Certain words spring a trap in his mind: Asylum seekers = lunatics Transistor factories = trans people Intervention = military

Reporter on Bond Market: The yields have come back up since then. Have you talked to Bessent about another type of intervention.? Trump: The ultimate intervention is our military. And if we have to use that, we will.

I think (hope) this type of thing has failed to understand the electoral backlash the type of politics this type of guy represents is about to receive. I really hope the Americans find a *vengeful* candidate next time round to properly shut the door to these guys.

Pete Hegseth could become the presidential candidate of the right-wing media’s id, running a furious culture war campaign fixated on domestic political enemies that checks all the boxes for authoritarian-minded pundits indifferent to traditional policy issues. www.mediamatters.org/pete-hegseth...

it's odd to me that the resistance to all this seems to be a one-man operation, and that one man is Sunder, but I thank him for his service. I just don't get how all this is allowed to fester, it's not like we can't guess the consequences

Sunder Katwala (sundersays)@sundersays.bsky.social

There needs to be more urgency from the police to investigate + prosecute this clear incitement to xenophobic violence against asylum seekers, the platform + the online regulator Ofcom & ministers to cut off & prevent this malicious & unlawful content inews.co.uk/news/vigilan...

If you were to be born at random today in a random country your odds of living a good life in a free and rich country are significantly significantly better if it's a monarchy. Worst case it's a rich gulf state, very very worst N Korea. I would rethink some of your assumptions.

This is obviously correct. Anyone who thinks at this point they are rejecting all AI hasn't noticed when they have used it successfully.

Dmitry Grozoubinski@explaintrade.com

I know people will yell at me but: "Regulate the shit out of it and fine companies a bazillion dollars when they're negligent or willfully harmful" seems like a more sustainable position in the long term than "reject all AI on principle." I just don't think the latter argument is winnable.
