lol my vile MP is now demanding that the lib dems collapse the Birmingham council power sharing agreement with the greens over the ZiR motion the reason labour can't do it themselves is because they threw a tantrum after they lost a bunch of seats due to being awful and refused to join a coalition

Letter below, shout out to Jess Phillips and Alistair Cairns who are also strong contenders for most viscerally repulsive member of parliament

still very funny to me that all the boomers were permanently brain broken by their bins not being picked up for three weeks they wouldn't have lasted a minute in John Cotton's Birmingham

👌 work even for a Guardian columnist (fallaciously) going "AHA LOGICAL FALLACY!" in a post where you use 3 yourself is a masterclass 1. Strawman - actually the Israeli state is zionist ∴ racist 2. Syllogism (🤔) - some people != all, or even most, people 3. Ad hominem - person bad ∴ argument wrong

George Monbiot@georgemonbiot.bsky.social

You can also rightly note that the Israeli government is both Zionist and racist (as well as murderous and genocidal). But to extend that conjunction to all Zionists is a syllogism - a logical fallacy. It becomes even worse when “Zionist” is used by some people as code for Jew.

not to mention the rhetorical flourishes like trying to limit culpability for the genocide to a handful of senior politicians, of course, but you take them as read from these people

I saw this absolute classic in Birmingham a few months ago, it sat there for weeks

I heard one thing loud and clear in Andy Burnham’s landmark speech: the entrancing sound of jangling keys | Owen Jones

When you think of it, artificial intelligence is ableist and harmful bullshit which never should have been invented and any proper Marxist movement should seek to abolish it.

didn't think I could respect Red Ed less, but he managed it saying that a state is committing ethnic cleansing and also declaring your unwavering support for it, just makes it even more evident that you are a genocidal racist, Edward!!

now that hes not any good at posting, his single redeeming feature is that he treats American soldiers like the vermin they are

Trump says 18 Americans dying fighting Iran is “small potatoes”

I hate notifications and my phone making noise so much I just instinctively turned the emergency ones off can't imagine any disaster that might befall me where a 10 minute headstart would be worth the risk of my last conscious thoughts being about Andy Burnham

Sad to see people posting on social media negatively about Rod Liddle, who died yesterday. If I have disagreed with you very strongly in life - and you die - I hope I'll be either silent, or kind.

I will remember Rod Liddle for the fact that the lawyer who checked my book before publication had no issue with me writing that Liddle couldn’t be a teacher because he’d have had sex with the students. Why? Because Liddle wrote it in a national magazine.

To take the toughest question "were school closures worth doing?" The government did not want to do it, it was not a default response, and at least the first time it was against an apocalyptic backdrop. It was a choice that, as much as I hate him, Matt Hancock did not do lightly.

the "eat out to help out" thing -- the fact that you couldn't get the discount if you got takeaway, which helps the business the exact same amount without risking anyone's life -- was like an existential unmooring thing for me. a time when i fully realised i live at the whim of capricious idiots

It is quite strange how little the actual public inquiry we're having into the UK's Covid response - the one that's publishing in-depth reports every few months - factors into the "you're not even allowed to ask these questions" complaints. We are, in fact, officially asking these questions!

ironically seeing these freaks do this whole thing again reminds me just how radicalising it was to watch a bunch of posh know-nothing wankers callously talk about letting ordinary people die

Lewis Goodall@lewisgoodall.com

No need for anyone to agree with me - but some of the responses to this on here reminds me just how stifling and absolutist a period in our national discourse Covid was.

it has been ruinous for me personally, it happens with or without my participation, it is intolerable in a way that cannot be easily expressed in words, and it's clear that absolutely no one will ever face even the slightest consequence for their gleeful participation
