My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

We’re getting hammered up here, rain and wind all night, wind seems to be worse this morning, though so far only one bird box and a small willow blown down. Our garden is pretty sheltered, though if you look at the large oak and willow on the left you can just see how strong it is.

A shout out to Citizens Advice. They send workers at our foodbank every week, where they offer far more than sticking plaster solutions. Clients leave looking years younger than when they arrive.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Pensioner poverty has halved in the past 30 years, as the shadow work and pensions secretary Helen Whately claimed. But how much of this was down to the Conservatives? Almost all the fall she’s talking about happened under Labour.

One million Londoners reached. Thousands fewer victims of violence. Our @london-vru.bsky.social is helping turn the tide, with hospital admissions for young people injured in knife assaults down 55% since 2019. This shows what prevention can achieve, but there’s more to do.

This week, dozens of libraries across the capital are offering free NHS support sessions, helping residents book appointments, manage prescriptions online and build digital skills. Check with your local library to find out what’s available.

When did the BBC description of Tommy Robinson change from ‘far right activist’ to ‘political activist’? Because that’s how he’s described on Radio 4 now

Went to see this guy talk last night. Utterly captivating, hopeful, inspiring. Yes it makes you sad for what came after him, but as he kept saying, things can change and they can be better again.

So they're at it again 🙄 Torturing valid HMRC data to create wildly misleading headlines, designed to invoke fear and anger about immigrants. Same old, same old... (and you'll see just how old shortly!) 🧵1/28

Being a trans man in the UK: your colleagues don't have to treat you as a man, you can't use men's facilities, if you look too much like a man you can't use women's facilities either, on your deathbed the NHS will put you in a "third space" of some kind, whatever that is (probably not great).

I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.

Dear tv and radio producers. Thankyou for the invitation. But, no, I do not want to appear on your show to defend the idea that I am English, after 50 years of living and working here, because the increasingly feral right want to turn this into a "debate" and you cannot see how you're being played

Stratford is one of Europe’s great regeneration success stories. It’s ready for its next chapter - European rail links. I’m proud to say I’m working with the government to deliver new cross-Channel trains from East London. The benefits would be felt far beyond our city.

Hey folks. In total honesty my tour is NOT selling well. I’ve sold 30 tickets in a 400 seater in Birmingham, and not much more elsewhere. This is a poor take that suggests Owen Jones doesn't know much about Russia in the 1990s, including Russia-US or wider Russia-West relations in the 1990s. By giving only one part of the story, he is repeating the Russian political elite's self-serving line that it was all the West's fault. Long 🧵

The West helped create Vladimir Putin. A senior Western diplomat warned in 1994 where capitalist 'shock therapy' would take Russia. They ignored him - and ended his diplomatic career.
