This stat stopped me dead in my tracks. Facebook makes more ad revenue off of scams (that Facebook internally admits and acknowledges are scams!) than the GDP of 72 of the world's nations.

The Globe is correct about the narrow point but missing the bigger one. The province's February OSAP cuts, which took hundreds of millions of dollars from mostly public university and college students, were a smokescreen to protect malfeasant private colleges. THAT'S the scandal.

22 California billionaires have spent a combined $150 million so far to defeat Prop 40. By spending their fortunes trying to stop California from taxing billionaires, they're making the argument for a billionaire wealth tax more clearly and articulately than anyone else possibly could.

Exactly right. Batteries don’t just smooth out delivery, they provide the path to grid resilience and reduce the need for massive investments on an aging grid. Also, a lot of us have a 50-80kWh battery parked in the driveway most of the time.

Jenny Chase@solarchase.bsky.social

7. Batteries are going to grow like crazy for the next five years or so and BNEF’s forecasting team are being cowards about it. Batteries are still expensive compared with no batteries, but they are easy and quick to build, and can sometimes replace hard-to-organise investments like transmission.

You might think there’s not much you can do to stop billionaires. But you can delete your Twitter account, and push to make remaining on the platform (for businesses and politicians in particular) socially and morally unacceptable. Posting = supporting Musk, straight up.

…and unite neighborhoods around kindness and supportive communities. When ICE thugs showed up, Minnesotans were ready.   In a funny way, this book is like the blueprint to the Death Star:

Its shows that the object intended to create fear & blind compliance has a vulnerability, a thermal exhaust port into which an everyday citizen like Renee Good, Wilber Perez or Rev. David Black could fire a proton torpedo. Which I guess makes the book R2D2, in case you need another reason to buy it.

Both authors found hope through understanding the mechanics of how the deeply weird, apocalyptic factions including Christian Nationalist end-timers, ethnonationalist extremists and tech oligarchs found common cause, and in so doing explore their deep, fundamental weaknesses.   Just one example:

… Rejecting the epidemic of spineless anticipatory obedience, Minnesota's 'organizing in advance' movement built resilient coalitions under the Greater than Fear banner, pulling in a wide swath of religious organizations, workers unions and grassroots orgs to counter divisive dog-whistle politics...

I think it is crucial for the health of the Democratic party that the entire consultant class from previous administrations, including and especially Clinton, be told to go home and stop bothering people. They are wrong about everything and have been holding the party back for decades.

As you skim the announcement of the $30B expansion of LNG in BC today, consider this thread: “What we need is a massive clampdown on the influence of money over politics, including lobbying transparency, campaign finance reform, an end to the revolving door between politics and lobbying.”

Here is how politics, in most cases, works: Rich and powerful interests, whether in fossil fuels, finance, big tech, media, meat, pharma or foreign governments, make a demand, and use their sophisticated tools to persuade a government to adopt it. The government adopts it. Please read whole🧵

If a consortium of fossil fuel companies are investing $30B into something, do you think emissions and are going to go down? Or up? And natural gas prices for Canadians? Down or up? Australia holds the answer to both. bsky.app/profile/rswi...

When you use framing / communications tactics to re-frame presentation away from your true intentions, that re-framing starts to creep into your soul and your mind; backwards-infecting your ideology. So: renewable deployment *actually* stops being about climate. Fossil phase-out stops mattering.

Exactly. "Sandbox" my arse. It's only the public and media's ignorance about how all things computer actually work that prevents the AI industry's mix of incompetence, Machiavellian profiteering, and techbro fanboy fantasy-think being obvious.

If you showed up at Defcon and gave talk about how your autonomous malware did something unexpected and damaged someone else's computers, the first question from the audience would be "Why are you so shit at making secure sandboxes?" It wouldn't be "How are you so awesome at making hacking tools?"

As usual, @doctorow.pluralistic.net provides a rational, oddly reassuring counterpoint to the broadly irrational coverage of this “incident”. Also the point that OpenAI quietly feeding the Skynet narrative helps them raise more investment is such a sign of the deeply weird times we are living in.

Which is not to say that the OpenAI/Hugging Face hack is *nothing*. It's something, all right: but it's a *specific* something, with an explicable, even foreseeable trajectory.
