wrote and deleted my posts about todays' AI coding discourse but it all comes down to what @unormal.bsky.social says here imo it's a maddening dissonance, i hate AI and i also have come to fully believe that coding is uniquely, irreversibly changed. think criticisms need to be clear-eyed about that

on the bright side, i really do not think that admitting LLMs have changed coding means you also need to stomach AI in other parts of your life. most of the proposed consumer applications sold by tech are horseshit

admitting that it might be impossible to keep AI out of coding (at scale, not talking individual creators and how they practice their craft) doesn't mean you widely accept AI, because those other applications do not resemble coding, they are largely subjective, untestable, and not about the output

"oh so coding isn't an art?" of course it is! keep practicing it! unfortunately it's also an especially output-oriented and testable process that computers are getting really, REALLY good at. unlike these other shoehorned applications this tech is actually disrupting commercial software engineering

i admire people not wanting to cede any ground, to not allow any "just for code" AI allowances, and i really wish i believed that was widely viable but seeing (against my will!) the actual power of these tools i really think this battle is already lost and we need to focus elsewhere

In the Japanese PC-88 port of Ultima 3: Exodus by Pony Canyon, if you try to Talk/Transact (T key) to an enemy monster, they literally say "FUCK YOU!!" in English. Hilarious, and apparently nobody has discovered or posted about this before online in English or Japanese

i have been chatting and texting in all lowercase for as long as i can remember and i wish i knew how to stop without feeling like a boomer. even my gamedev LLC is stylized as "running jump" and it's been so annoying to maintain. telling event organizers "um actually it's lowercase" lol insufferable
