Worrying scenes in the Channel today, for all interested in asylum policy and maritime tactics. A small boat from Normandy spent more than 30 hours at sea. Those on board now on their 2nd rescue vessel as Border Force forced to play cat and mouse with far-right activists who have their own boat.

The BBC news report simply says Mr Thomas broadcast a livestream. This seems highly inadequate in quite a lengthy report, leaving out such key details: what he did; the French stating the behaviour was unlawful www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Mr Thomas is banned from France, and the Port of Dover, for previous lawbreaking. The French authorities warn that the conduct is prosecutable. bsky.app/profile/yeom...

10. French authorities putting out a fairly direct warning that attempts to interfere with their actions in the Channel can be prosecuted. Thomas/Tommo is I believe subject to an entry ban to France, which he is thought to have violated once so far.

Times reporter Emma Yeomams on how vigilante Mr Daniel Thomas attempted to endanger life of a rescuer at sea (fortunately unsuccessfully on this occasion).

5. After around 30 hours at sea, the dinghy was intercepted by the RNLI and those on board transferred to two lifeboats. Two lifeboat personnel tried to secure the empty dinghy. Thomas yelled abuse and knifed the dinghy to deflate it - with a rescuer still on board.

It is probably right to make it the headline. To omit it entirely while finding space for "organised recent protests" looks like bowlderising the news out of some curiously skewed idea that being even handed means out leaving out the facts www.theguardian.com/world/2026/s...

Interesting on proficiency. Of the 139 people who speak Urdu as their main language, 114 can speak English well or very well, according to the census. There are many more Bengali speakers who say they cannot speak English well (1,391)

The outcome of using terrorism legislation against legitimate protest. All other obvious issues aside, it makes comparing terrorism stats meaningless. How do you compare July 7th or a planned neo-Nazi attack with someone holding a placard against a genocide? www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

theguardian.comAlmost half of terrorism arrests in Great Britain since 9/11 have been in past yearIncrease coincides with proscription of Palestine Action last year which has led to thousands of arrests for allegedly supporting the protest group

There's no forgiving this. No living it down. It's a stain on our humanity. When all this is over, the monsters who did this should be pariahs. And the soulless thugs who cheered it on while dehumanizing Haitian immigrants should be reminded of what they did every day of their lives.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick@reichlinmelnick.bsky.social

The situation in Haiti is terrifying. On Sunday, 150 gunmen swept down on a town to kill, rape, loot, and burn. 22 people were executed in a churchyard. 52 were taken hostage. Stephen Miller mockingly says Haiti is safe and ICE just sent its second deportation flight this month; with kids on board.
