The "small government" idea is a very American idea. The point of it is that a small government (or the term I prefer, State) can't regulate nor fulfill almost anything, and Big Companies are free to take over and do whatever they want to get filthy rich.

It remains very funny to me that a lot of ostensibly smart people cannot accept that a small government philosophy and racism are a package deal

One of the main expression of this is the privatization of research: in the US system, Big Companies are the ones having research labs, not publicly funded universities. A small State is another way of saying "deregulation", or "extreme Capitalism".

It's a nice day to be a software dev, init?

Russ Cox@swtch.com

The details are now public, as of two hours ago. bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi... The secret P-384 keys for these intermediate CAs are all zeros except the last 8 bits. All not-updated software can be MITM'ed now. IOT boxes that can't or don't update are now trivially MITM'able forever.

We always talk about climate change mitigation /prevention costs, but rarely about the cost of doing nothing. Turns out, doing nothing is *very* expensive

Aufgeschaltet: still, ohne Medienmitteilung. www.bafu.admin.ch/de/kosten-er...

The Telegraph obtained information that it was Elon Musk’s idea to reduce the maximum speed of Starlink-controlled (interceptor-) drones in Ukraine, then got cold feet that this might backfire on Starlink in the European market and then finally blamed Trump for this episode.

I believe most people don't understand what this insane AI race is all about. If you control the machine everyone turns to for answers, you control reality. The race is about power and control over people. The winner will be galactic emperor for life and you won't even know it!

Ölbert is the worst thing that has happened to federal politics. A total disaster for environmental policies - the kind of thing that tends to happen when you make a oil & car lobbyist your head of the Environmental Ministry!

That's my experience too

I think it's important to interact with AI in a very carefully controlled way: specifically to understand exactly how toxic and terrible it is I only get it to return text in two conditions: (a) a topic I know well and (b) a question I **already answered**. You learn v quick how bad the answers are

We may, through AI, finally understand where true value lies. It's the journey itself, not the destination

My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet

You know, the thing is, I had drafted this piece a month ago, and then never published it, because I thought maybe it was too mean.

Ukraine can't target oil facilities in Russia, but Russia can continue hitting residential areas, civilian power plants and the like. Poor Russia, the war in **Ukraine** is so hard on them 😭

The Trump administration threatened senior Ukrainian officials with a total cutoff of U.S. intelligence sharing and access to the Europe-led PURL weaponry scheme if Kyiv strikes Russian energy infrastructure, sources told the Kyiv Independent.

I don't really know why the software development world has fallen in this delusion, but here we are claiming "10x improvements" again based off vibes

Gergely Orosz@gergely.pragmaticengineer.com

The last time building software sped up ~10x (early 2000s, the agile movement), a massive interest in automated testing followed almost immediately (unit tests, TDD, XP etc) Today, building software sped up 10x, easily: and a similar massive interest in automated testing + verification is following

Plesse come back!

Hey!!! Here's a new @crikey.com.au piece - on why the bullshitty AI doom hype frenzy perfectly represents the tech industry's cutlist climate denialism and their unhealthy methane addiction. Plus the media's total failure to grasp the real risks at play. www.crikey.com.au/2026/09/22/a...

This is one of those pieces that are at the same time great journalism, but also a big "wait, you didn't know that??". Of course they store and read what you send them...

When I was a young new developer entering the workforce, an important metric for choosing a company was whether they enforced the use of specific IDEs or other tools, or if they allowed people to use what made them more productive. We ended up in the dystopia version because of course 🤦

AI is sold as a way to wire the toy steering wheel directly into the corporation's drive-train: pluralistic.net/2026/01/05/f... Seen in this light, bosses' insistence that workers use AI makes perfect sense.

Excellent thread, but about this point: the break points to me are how unrealistically the AI persona stays intact. It's always the same, verbose, ultra polite, agreeable persona, and that's extremely tiring and fake. You never reach the "I don't know" limit that every human has.

Bruno Dies@brunodias.dev

But LLM output can be incredibly convincing; it doesn't really have those boundaries, it doesn't really seem "robotic" in a way that breaks the spell. Spending all day every day interacting with these systems is therefore rapidly damaging to one's sense of reality.

Imagine if we built infrastructure to serve the majority of people (who use public transit), rather than the few (cars require lots of space, but move very few people)!

An argument I often hear is "once an innovation has been discovered, we never went back". But I have a feeling that this is just a bias because we don't remember what we don't do anymore. However I'm trying to think counter-examples. I have only one so far: the Concorde Any others come to mind?

What the heck??

This is really alarming. www.theguardian.com/world/2026/a... Having evidently decided that a full-on military invasion of Greenland would rouse too much opposition, Trump's fossil fuel cronies are doing his dirty work for him, moving in on drilling in an environmentally protected area and daring

No longer content with pillaging intellectual work and dismembering our environment (already critically weakened), AI companies are now hellbent on destroying books galore including rare editions. Shut down these nefarious enterprises already.

Trump is out of his mind and is throwing bombs left and right in Turkey. Whenever we decide to put a stop to this madman, is way overdue. P. S.: Rutte should resign. His attempts to appease Trump make him look ridiculous. It's a failed strategy, and it's maybe time to have someone with a backbone
