Confiscating the passport of the elected representative of the opposition territory in a raid with a flimsy pretext to attempt to strip them of citizenship is something we have words for when it happens in other countries

why are these sweaty centrists always so eager to have lunch with racists and fascists? or rather, get other people to hang out with them and maybe see where they’re coming from?

Justin Wolfers@justinwolfers.bsky.social

The best cure for ideological bias is find someone on the other side and go to lunch with them.⁣ ⁣ Sometimes we disagree about facts. Sometimes we disagree about values. Figuring out which is which is fun part. https://newsletter.platypuseconomics.com/p/my-libertarian-friends-were-right

Take a break from being depressed that everything you love is being destroyed by slop for a moment and let me tell you about the beautiful symbiotic relationship between graffiti writers, train yard workers, and model train enthusiasts.

extremely bold to subsidize the purchase of overpriced, oversized vehicles during a climate crisis. more like turd way am i right

More than 10 million Americans take out a used car loan every year, with an average rate of an insane 11.4%. We lower those rates by 4 points with our FHA for Car Loans proposal, saving the typical borrower $6,000 over the life of their loan.

lost was so ahead of its time in this regard (derogatory)

This is the structural problem with post-streamer television which turned ALL tv into the cliffhanger. Both every episode and season of every show has to end with a cliffhanger to make the viewer click next. Nothing is self contained and there is no closure.

you can only do this so many times. gulf of america had a little momentum behind it and trump voters live there. but the smallest great lake just to spite a very benign neighbor? using “america” again instead of getting slightly creative/symbolic with naming? it’s got no juice.

JLRay@jlray.bsky.social

The latest from YouGov (n ~ 17.6k): Yes, everyone hates the idea of renaming Lake Ontario. Trump barely breaks 40 percent of *Republicans* and Independents barely break into the *single digits* yougov.com/en-us/daily-...

Human rights lawyer Wu Shaoping barely escaped arrest in his native China in 2019. The anti-communist Christian convert applied for asylum, made it to Pa. - doing it all the right way But in Trump's wretched America, the gulag is one traffic stop away My new column www.inquirer.com/opinion/wu-s...

hearing lindsey graham got his head stuck in a honey jar and as he was struggling to pull it off he stepped on a roller skate and slid across the room where he fell out a third story window and into a hippopotamus pit

it’s hot as shit and i did a million cleans and squats at the gym this morning and today really had me wishing for an electric assist. e-bikes are great, even if you’re fit and have a short commute.

Obviously this is excellent, detailed, and in many ways pretty terrifying - essential reading for anyone with even a passing concern for literature, thought, learning etc. I would only add that there is an even broader crisis here around attention. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...

theatlantic.comThe End of Reading Is HereOptimists once believed that universal literacy was inevitable. Now it seems that the age of reading might be a short anomaly in human history.

it’s very cathartic to slap a car after a driver’s transgressions but shit like this is why i stopped doing it. it turns drivers into homicidal maniacs when you touch their cars, it pops the bubble of their invincibility and they gotta threaten to run you over to reassert dominance.

i was just wondering how Jonathan Ross, the guy who killed Renee Good, was doing. did Minneapolis PD ever arrest him? at least his coworkers are out there reminding the public that Ross killed an unarmed woman and they don’t want us taking about it.

Taniel@taniel.bsky.social

Two ICE agents tracked down a woman *inside a polling place* yesterday. Why? They demanded that she take down an Instagram post in which she named Jonathan Ross as the man who shot & killed Renee Good (after the Star Tribune identified Ross). www.syracuse.com/news/2026/06...

once for texas independence day i served lone star beer in a glass with a beautiful queso rim. there’s some r&d to make sure the queso sticks a little better but i still think i should get royalties when maudie’s introduces this great idea.

Truly wild research on the change in bike mode share in NYC, London, Paris and Berlin. Between 2000 and 2023, Paris went from 1 out of every 100 trips being on a bike to *one out of 9!* Many people, including credible researchers, would have told you that that *could not* happen.

I’ve been thinking about this guy almost daily for ten fucking years. essentially my entire 30’s. when he finally croaks I imagine I’ll let out a sigh so deep it realigns my fucking spine

it’s really too bad that urban land use is so disproportionate to what people want. like 5% of urban land provides what 39-47% of americans yearn for.

Conrad Hackett@conradhackett.bsky.social

Most Americans would rather live in a big house in a car-based community than a small house in a walking-based community. https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2026/03/19/majority-of-americans-prefer-spread-out-communities-with-big-houses/

i worked for a film season on a friendly, bucolic organic farm. it was nice in some ways but i made less than minimum wage and fucked up my back. best case scenario you’re broke and injured. there’s nothing “deeply human” about harvesting fruits and vegetables at an industrial scale.

Also as someone who's actually worked on farms, y'all who haven't seem to have a weird picture of what it's actually like lol. Exploitative labour conditions make it shitty, of course. But when the working conditions are good, it's nice work! It's deeply human stuff! It's plants and fresh air!

In a nutshell, the Dem lodestar should be: "ICE is bad, and immigration is good"

Greg Sargent@gregsargent.bsky.social

My theory of the moment: The extraordinary courage of ordinary people in places like Minneapolis is reawakening us to our social and economic ties to immigrants. It's making "love thy neighbor" cool again. That's the ultimate antidote to MAGA hate. Thoughts on this: newrepublic.com/article/2059...

with the caveat that immigrants belong here regardless, the one immigrant from cameroon i worked with at a restaurant was the sweetest and most hardworking dude there. i thought he was a recent arrival due to his thick accent but at that point he had been in america as long as i had.

Gillian Brockell@gillianbrockell.com

Also overnight, this Omni 767 landed in Cameroon. This is likely a third-country removal of non-Cameroonian migrants with withholding of removal orders to their countries of origin. Cameroon has been in an armed civil conflict since 2017, with deadly clashes occurring as recently as last Monday.

this and using the phrase “make america —— again” grinds my gears too. i know it was an effective campaign slogan. it’s also reactionary and you should come up with something that doesn’t reference the return of american fascism.

Protester in Minnesota: I’m 70 years old and I’m fucking angry *disappears into gas*

Schizachyrium scoparium reposted

Thesis: ICE is un-American and the Minneapolis protestors are real Americans. Antithesis: Ackshually ICE is operating in a long American tradition of racist terror. Synthesis: Minneapolis is now the epicenter of a clash between two distinct but historically grounded American political traditions.

in high school health class, GLAAD sent folks representing each of the L, G, B, and T categories as it were, to answer questions and share their stories. the trans guy was hilarious and very frank and changed my perception from “weird, don’t get it” to just another kind of person.

didn’t much think about their rights beyond knowing LGBT people in general shouldn’t face discrimination or bigotry, until the GOP turned their attention to them in a way that reminded me of the relentless homophobia of the 2000s.

in terms of sports, that argument didn’t resonate with me like it did a lot of “reasonable”, moderate people. i was a late bloomer and couldn’t play football safely in high school because of my size. i got over it. genetics and gender are a spectrum, fairness in sports doesn’t exist.

everyone is dunking on this take for good reason but cities of the plain definitely reinforced my love for the finest in cheap bourbons, old granddad. thank you cormac mccarthy.
