Pontifex maximus: “we live in a performance-driven culture that constantly compares and ranks people, sometimes ruthlessly” and a “misguided understanding of meritocracy ultimately fails to respect people,” meaning many members of the younger generation give up before even trying. “Quite a few young

I reviewed JD Vance's spiritual memoir for @jacobinmag.bsky.social . I wasn't particularly impressed. jacobin.com/2026/10/vanc...

Irenaeus would have been a great poster. Erasmus would have been a great poster as well. Kierkegaard would have been a better poster than Joyce Carol Oates.
history has furnished us with a lot of characters who would've been incredible posters if they had lived in the Internet age. but I would put Jim Jones up against anybody you could name

Can't say we weren't warned. Frank Herbert was writing about the civilizational threat these guys posed in the 1960s.
Ezra Klein asked Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang about AI making kids worse at math and reading. Huang’s reply: “Does it matter?” Then he said he doesn’t know his own address or phone number. “We’re going to lose some fine intellectual dexterity.” www.nytimes.com/2026/09/23/o...

Well said
If students using AI to write seems to force a choice between letting them and giving up writing, that’s a failure of thought — we give up writing either way. But in fact, anyone can still choose to write, and we have as many reasons to do so now as before. So what is it that we want from writing?

Normally I just appreciatively read @jamellebouie.net 's columns-sharable video content just isn't my bag. But this is a very, very, very trenchant piece of commentary that captures a lot of how I increasingly understand the disjunction between the commentary environment and on-the-ground politics.
Can you get the job* you want without a PhD? If no, then do a PhD. If yes, read a lot and spend time with friends. *PhDs are professional degrees. As such, they are related to employment.
People are misconstruing this as "doing a PhD is never fun." No, it can be! But it's not a commitment you choose to do *because you think it will be fun* -- if you don't need to earn the credentials, go study the topic on your own and avoid the stress of generals exams etc.

Mini fridge?! The luxury!
Sneering about the "faculty lounge" is deeply funny. Most departments don't have one, but if they do, it's like a wall of mailboxes, a coffee maker and maybe a mini-fridge. You're basically sneering about the break room on The Office. "Oooh, look who has a *vending* machine! Excuse me, m'lord!"

Surely this person exists in Maine. And surely he or she should be the next Senator from that state.
A former Marine, Bowdoin grad who works as an attorney in Portland and wwho can wax poetic about Nathaniel Hawthorne, the Civil War, the Red Sox, all while making a well intentioned joke about Colby. Is this so hard?

The foundational lie of Trumpism (and I’m using that word precisely to refer to the ideology of intellectual types who defend him), from day one, has been the claim that good character is a “luxury belief” and nothing more than cover for the wealthy to punish the poor. This belief is evil.
I don’t think "Dem HR ladies" is labor coded or working class aligned. It comes from the same place everything that is terrible in the last two years has come from. The backlash to the Me Too and Black Lives Matter movements.
