Say hi below and tell me more about you...
It’s been a wild 24 hours for me on BlueSky and I’m getting so many messages asking what can be learned from Brazil and applied globally on top of the below. Once again, I’m not a political expert but this is what I’ve seen as a consensus amongst specialists and voters so far 🧵
I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.
From time to time, I think about plaid shirt guy. I'm not even in the US, not American, but I think his response was so timely, so on point, and so funny, it will be talked about in the history books as an example of social media amplified resistance.
Hope he's safe and well.

People don’t understand why I keep noting that BlueSky is not a bubble, it is a counterpublic. It serves its own organizational function: you can see in realtime in January 2025, on multiple types of social media, shouting that an executive order is instruction to an agency. This one stuck.

You may have seen reports about the campaign for charities to be more 'transparent' about who funds them.
Well it turns out the mysterious new right-wing think tank behind it won't say who funds or runs them, and used fake names for the authors of the report which launched their campaign

There's PLENTIFUL evidence that Russia interfered in the EU referendum. Most sensible people on both sides accept that as a fact.
If Farage can counter this obvious truth then he should present his case to us all rather than grandstanding and lazily calling Burnham a "liar".
Today I'm at RARE Summit, attending remotely with coffee, notebook and pens... Are you attending in person, or remotely like me?
I've made time for this because it matters to listen and learn. I can't do the work of community building or consulting without learning from others.

If you're anti-fascist, anti-racist and a multitasker, I recommend sliding over to the RNLI's online shop to pick up some early Christmas gifts and kick against racist attacks of this brilliant organisation at the same time.
The jumper is for me. It's gorgeously soft.

Most discussions about “misinformation” treat the problem as if people simply don’t have good enough critical-thinking skills. It sounds intuitive, but it’s not entirely accurate. The problem isn’t just individual ignorance, it’s the structure of the information environment people are placed into.
Are you building a community of circumstance without realising it?
Communities of circumstance are for people who need a place to connect because life happened in ways they didn't choose.
I developed that definition because I couldn't find a working definition anywhere.
1/3
I've been working with communities of circumstance for over a decade. Very little has been written about them. The people building them are too busy to talk about their work.
The problem is, they're still using the standard community building approach that doesn't work.
2/3
We need a different approach to how we build communities of circumstance.
Do you work for a nonprofit, a health or carers organisation, or run peer support programmes?
You're not alone. I've spent over a decade building and leading this type of community. Follow for insight and ideas.
Now you can opt out of having your posts shown to non-followers in the Discover feed.

Still seeing jobs in the charity sector that 'reserve the right to close applications early'
That's likely to lead to indirect discrimination against people with chronic illnesses, parents, caregivers, and people with long commutes or long work hours.
Give. People. Time. Make. Recruitment. Fair.
Event organisers and community builders should check out Eventbrite's beautifully designed and brilliant Social Study Trends

This is not misinformation.
That's what I normally cover - something out of context, an opinion quoted as fact, or a deliberate misinterpretation...
This is none of those.
This is full-on disinformation.
Because that is NOT from the Express. It is entirely fake😱

Hearing some disappointing examples of distant and uncaring, toxic and unpleasant, or controlling and nitpicking management styles in the charity sector at the moment.
It takes time and effort to manage in a constructive and situational way. But the alternatives will hurt you and your team.
Twice this week, the water butt has been refilled by the rain showers. So we're now playing the game of using the water ahead of the next shower to avoid damp. And watching to see if the grass is actually returning to it's usual soft green state.
This is summer #ukweather that I'm used to!
If you only read one article about Jason Arday, let it be this one.
And let's stop talking about Arday (aside from tributes, support and calls to correct the record) and start talking about Nathan Cofnas and the agenda that led to this horrible situation.
NEW: It was a digital lynching. And the media is never going to hold itself to account for the role it played in Jason Arday’s death.
But there are things we can do. This is a practical guide based on my own experience.

The age of centralised social media had us convinced that constant growth and the whole world in one big public square was the goal. In the end, that and monetization (and political weaponisation) led to the mess that Facebook and Twitter are now in.
Bluesky needs to be viable, not massive.
Developers backed by American asset managers want to dredge up Falmouth harbour, spilling toxic chemicals into local waterways, just so mega cruise ships can drop off tourists who barely visit the local area.

This is a new era of midlife for me - becoming obsessed with the sweet mustard ketchup and pickle relish pots used in recent Gousto meals, then tracking down the supplier to order them direct.
Tracklements have limited retail reach but a website to order direct. Success!
So, I went out with the dog for a walk. It rained. A couple of weeks later, I put the washing out. It rained. We need rain!
Perhaps I should arrange a picnic with friends to bring on another spell of rain...
Some cooling quiet for another hot day. 🎧

My latest story for @reasonstobecheerful.worldreasonstobecheerful.world/kidney-excha...
Yes my jacket is wet and the dog had to be towel dried after coming home early, but I'm happy.
It's raining, and it's been raining for more than 15 minutes now. Willing it to be in Dulwich and wetting down the forest and coastal marrams. It's tinder dry here and that's dangerous.
63 grass fires in one day. That's the challenge London's firefighters faced yesterday. My thanks goes out to them for all their hard work.
We all have a part to play in reducing that risk. Keep sparks, cigarettes and anything hot well away from dry grass. If you spot a fire, call 999.

It’s worth pausing on the scale of Burnham’s social care pitch. This could be the biggest reform to health in England in a generation. A universal care system - effectively a second NHS - would be revolutionary. Just free personal care would be lifechanging for older and disabled people.
We should ask ourselves: what do we want from a social platform?
In this newsletter edition and its accompanying blog article, I discuss platforms' openness, values, ease of use, and community.
I looked at Mastodon, Eurosky, eYou, Monnett and others.

If you are not an old, I have to tell you that the web was so exciting because never before in human history could anyone* just post whatever they wanted anyone else to access from anywhere* on the planet 24/7. And you could do it from a school/library/cafe, cheap.
Sometimes small things aren't so small. This week I bought my first work laptop. I started freelancing in 2021 as a side project and used my personal laptop.
It started going slow, losing charge. Then video meetings had issues.
I've had two good years to build a reserve fund to buy one. So I did.
Which may seem like a small thing, but it was one of the biggest investments my desk and laptop operation has made so far.
Thankful for the clients who believed in my work from the beginning and the ones who have returned to work with me again.
I love the variety of #freelancing.
Some things aren't meant to be 'hacked'. Not everything is supposed to be 'optimised'. You don't have to 10x everything you do.
Plan. Listen. Design with safety and inclusion first. Build carefully. Scale with intention. Review and reflect.
The walk is the walk. Take your time.

I think it's time for a different playbook for not for profit community building.
I've been translating community building strategy and tactics for a health charity context for years. I'm not alone. Last week I met 3 people doing the same.
If this resonates, let me know...
