I really don't see why publishers shouldn't be upfront about how they're using GenAI if they feel it will improve the quality of service they provide to authors while making life easier for staff! /checks notes/ oh

I sort of understand why antipsychotics are a "specialty" medicine billing-wise, but I do NOT understand why even an insurance company would want to make something called an "antipsychotic" difficult to access.

Torn between “I really hope this new medication works as expected without the intolerable side effect (sleep deprivation) of the last one!” and “I hope it fails because Jesus is this one expensive and complicated.”

Today (Oct 27) is the last "safe" day to return your ballot via USPS! We highly recommend now returning it to a dropbox or voting site (options differ by state) If you *must* return via USPS, take your ballot to a USPS location and ask for a postmark at the counter. Maybe take a photo w/ it too. 🗳️

Has a psych appointment today. Mentioned that I've been super anxious about, quote, "My social ineptitudes, I guess?" "Well that's a reasonable thing to worry about." JESUS Christ, man.

I decided to ask my parents (who are middling all things considered) who are not tech CEOs for three bullet points about what makes me special because it simply could not be that hard. This is what I got instead AI generated cliches:

I think the lesson from Lula is not never talk about the opposition; it's articulate a positive vision that's basically, We Can Just Do Things. That's why Mamdani-ism is so popular - voters have an intrinsic sense that their electeds have agency they're not using

right like nobody is saying Lula is perfect but the world’s most awful billionaire fascists did all they could to prevent this and failed and that fucking rocks

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

"You don't turn the Titanic around overnight" has been really bugging me because a) yes you can and b) you definitely should, that was the main problem

Extra funny to have done a "if you come at democracy, you best not miss"/"ah fuck, we missed" in a country where there's already AMPLE precedent for failed coups actually coming with consequences Between doubling the victory margin and the out and out fuckery I cannot imagine they'll be lenient now

I may have bad sunday scaries at times about my life choices but at least I dont have "Brazillian mayor who tried to kill mass transit to steal an election and STILL lost" level sunday scaries I wish all of Bolsonaro's party apparatus a very happy "25 years in prison"

Brazil was of two huge election results today—alongside the defeat of the nationalist, authoritarian leader of Serbia: "the slate of candidates selected by protesting students had won at least 135 seats in Serbia’s 250-member legislature" www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/w...

nytimes.comAleksandar Vucic Concedes Defeat in Serbian Election“It is clear that we have lost these elections,” Aleksandar Vucic said in a surprisingly early speech congratulating his opponents.

On a scale from MKUltra to Flat Earth, how conspiracy-brained is being suspicious about why I can buy 12 jumbo eggs for under two dollars in a swing state a week before the election?

If you’re American and don’t care about the Brazilian election, you should learn how much the corrupt powerful people in the US really care about the Brazilian election.

I wish I was exaggerating, 16 games from one dev, all AI slop, all clones of something else, all pumped out in the space of months. That's my experience of what AI tools are enabling, not creativity, not anyone's dream game, but spam. Constant, low effort, neverending, AI generated spam.

Because it was ProWritingAid's "donation" that kicked off the whole NaNo "no, no no, the plagiarism machine is GOOD actually, and if you don't let it steal your work you're ABLEIST" thing, so far as I recall.

S. H. Marr reposted

So, wait, has NaNoWriMo rebranded as "Novel November", paid for by ProWritingAid, which used to be a spell/grammar checker but now is (you guessed it) an "'AI' grammar checker"--in short, yet another way for a griftslop machine to grab human-written text? Do I have that right?

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

There was a fucking hole in our planet’s *atmosphere* Like a legit, no joke, “this will unravel our entire ecosystem” hole in the world, and then we fixed it by working together across national and political lines As a species we decided, “we will survive” Let’s do that some more

I always feel weird about the idea that Election Day should be a federal holiday because I’m hand it makes sense and other countries do it. On the other hand, who has federal holidays actually off work is an extremely skew demographic.

Also elections, even federal ones, are operated by states and they can actually chose a different election day so it would have to be a state holiday, but the problem remains so that’s ultimately moot.

Also, again. To those who think a coup attempt is unlikely. You see the pattern of escalation here, yes?

BREAKING: The Trump DOJ just sent letters to local election officials across California — every county in the state — demanding they identify potential noncitizens on their voter rolls and set aside their ballots. Local officials would "risk significant federal scrutiny" if they failed to comply.

It was pretty prevalent, but my exposure was actually at home with one the newer and fancier versions my family owned on CD-ROM. Like Oregon Trail IV or something. New version was better.

Americans who went to school in the 90s: did you play Oregon Trail? Did EVERYONE play Oregon Trail? I keep seeing it come up and wonder if it was truly that prevalent

I envy Brazil for its runoff system allowing people to realize their protest votes were stupid and to mobilize. I really hope the chance works for you all.

There's always something vindicating taking a problem to tech support and them having no idea what the hell is wrong. At least I'm not just incompetent. That said, we also have no idea what's wrong and this is work-related.
