The separatists in Alberta lost. Badly.
Why we don't have to go around pretending otherwise -- and why those who keep trying to platform their voices and reason with their unreasonable grievances are doing more harm than good. #cdnpoli#abpoliwww.nationalobserver.com/2026/10/26/o...
Albertans should be furious about this. Danielle Smith:
1) Lowered the threshold for signatures on a petition
2) Extended the duration in which they could be collected
3) Continues to pretend the people who signed the Forever Canada petition wanted a referendum
Shameless.
In short, Danielle Smith has wasted our money and time to demonize immigrants, pick a fight with the federal government and raise uncertainty for investing in Alberta for nothing of benefit.
She does not care about Alberta or Albertans, only herself.
An update on projected results of the "other" 9 AB referendum Q's:
Q6 flipped to No overnight, as expected.
** It still looks like all 4 "constitutional" questions will end up No **
The reason: most of the mail-in ballots are yet to be counted there. Those that have are 75% No.
A Calgary oil and gas CEO wrote a piece about how "the climate energy transition was a broken promise." It's filled with self-serving nonsense, and I'm here to point that out for you.

Mark Carney: "Polls don't vote. Only people vote. And now is the time to show up, mark the ballot. We need people to show up and vote and stand up for Alberta, stand up for Canada."
What the pro-Canada Conservatives don't seem to understand is that this sort of care and feeding of false grievances is what sustains the separatist movement.
They created it. They can choose to kill it. But they have to do the work. And throughout this campaign, not a single one has chosen to.
Honestly, fuck off with this revisionist history.
Trudeau and Guilbeault didn't cause the world price of oil to crash in 2014. They did nothing to "shut in" Alberta's resources. Trudeau offered help to Alberta in 2015 when Harper didn't.

Ukraine is taking on the machinery of foreign disinformation directly at the source. President Zelenskyy deserves our full, unwavering support for doing it.
Danielle Smith, how did your yesterday’s secretive meeting with the separatists and convicted Tamara Lich go?
Why weren’t media and Albertans allowed to hear what you said to them?
When campaigning for unity, we don’t hide.

I didn't mince my words. Alberta's anti-immigration referendum questions are racist. They are also a potential disaster for Alberta's economy. Last night, I rose in the Senate to denounce them - and to thank all the thousands of Albertans fighting against them. Please share. #notothenine#cdnpoli
these accusations, 5 weeks before a referedum to be run by Elections Alberta, cast serious concerns about the organizations ability/desire to run a free and fair process.
We need the legislature to be called and a debate to occur.

Water Not Coal has released a copy of a letter with concerns about Elections Alberta, including...
- 2 directors being fired without cause
- Multiple changes to how their petition was being verified mid process
- A service manager & 4 supervisors quitting with concerns the process was compromised.

The NDP’s first byelection win in a government-held riding since 1966 could easily be a preview of next year’s provincial election.
But the party cannot assume that Smith will continue to flail — it needs to tell its own economic story better, @maxfawcett.bsky.social writes.
New separation report just dropped.
The U of C’s independent report on the potential impacts of separation offers two main scenarios.
Here's the analysis if things don't go exactly to the separatist plan- and uh it's very, very, very, very bleak.

The myth Alberta 'subsidizes' the rest of Canada is the most powerful meme in the separatist armoury. But it's utterly false. I show that most Albertans get more back from federal programs than they personally pay in federal taxes, for

The closeness of this vote only reinforces that EVERY vote counts.
Remember this for the UCP referendum!
Whether by special ballot, at an advance poll, or at an election day poll we need everyone to VOTE!

This is a tremendous resource for understanding the 10 referendum questions facing Albertans this fall. Thorough and well-researched by a community of experts, it exposes the many myths surrounding immigration, the constitution and Alberta's place in Confederation.

I was one of 11 speakers at the launch of Public Interest Alberta campaign against the referendum questions: No to the Nine and Remain in Canada. calgarysun.com/news/politic...
My rallying cry. We must reject these nine noxious questions, which are cynically designed to incite discrimination and foment distrust in our courts, our county, and our fellow Canadians. Say no to the nine. And please read snd share. #ableg#abpoli#cdnpoli#Canada#Alberta#notothenine
1/ Canadians woke up this morning to an escalated trade war against our country.
And what does the UCP do?
Instead of standing with Canadians, they're making the most tone-deaf, embarrassing, un-Canadian statements we’ve heard - from the Premier to her chief of staff and deputy chief of staff.
At last night's Alberta Prosperity Project townhall, a keynote speaker spouted a racist remark that drew warm applause from the audience.
I won't repeat the vile comment here. You can find video elsewhere.
But it is very troubling, if entirely unsurprising. +
This US resident has insurance and this is the bill he got for a single visit to the ER
Canadians, we have so much to lose and nothing to gain from a two-tier system with private insurance like the Alberta gov is pushing
And just like that, Danielle Smith appoints Kristin Nelson Marciano, wife of long time Wildrose/UCP operative and current Chief of Staff to Brian Jean, Vitor Marciano to the board of Grant MacEwan University.

No one can ever believe anything Trump pledges, says or puts in writing. With Trump, a deal is never a deal and nobody can count on the US for anything while he’s president. His word is garbage, agreements mean nothing, and he lies about everything.
I’m surprised there haven’t been more polls looking into how many Albertans actually want a referendum or think this is a giant waste of everyone’s time and money
All these polls start off by uncritically accepting the separatists’ terms of debate right off the bat
40% or Albertans believe Danielle Smith “doesn’t care what happens as long as she stays in power” (including one-in-five UCP supporters)
Half of Albertans (49%) think Danielle Smith needs to resign (including one-in-five UCP supporters)

🧵🧵🧵 How long will the war with Iran last? In this thread, we recall what Trump has said.
March 1: “We intended 4 to 5 weeks."
March 2: "We’re already substantially ahead of our time projections.”
March 5: "The U.S. military ... continues to totally demolish the enemy far ahead of schedule.”

Last week Premier Smith (address to AB) announced an incoherent Referendum Q on secession
Today, by reframing that Q, Smith has effectively admitted its incoherence
But she has yet to admit that both Qs lock Albertans into yrs of uncertainty & unhelpful conflict & shd be withdrawn
#abpoli#cdnppoli
50 Million Dollars to ask some non-binding questions that are not a high priority to the vast majority of ABs.
Here's what is a priority to me:
1 - The cost of living for Albertans
2 - HC access - let's prevent ABs from dying in our ED WRs and hospital hallways

Just complete nonsense. The federal NDP and Bloc Quebecois are not "fringe parties" -- they win dozens of seats every election. The Alberta separatists have never won a single one federally, and only one at the provincial level.
And yet, the premier is allowing them to dictate her entire agenda.
Fact check of para 1 of Ms Smith's address to Albertans
1. The petition was that of an individual, Mitch Sylvestre, not a group
2. Whlle the Court held that Alberta failed to consult it also held that the UCP's amendments to the Act failed to revive Sylvestre's petition
Gaslighting
#abpoli#cdnpoli
To be clear: the 400,000-plus people who signed the Forever Canada petition don't want a referendum. They wanted to prevent one.
So no, Premier Smith, you don't get to add their names to those of the separatists. If anything, they more than cancel them out. #abpoli
If Premier Smith forges ahead with both a separation referendum and pipeline consultations this summer, the latter is almost certainly doomed to failure.
My latest.

This isn't how our constitution or the Notwithstanding Clause works. There are certain Charter rights that can't be invalidated by a legislative override, and that also includes Section 35 treaty rights.
Shouldn't the premier -- especially one who constantly uses the NWC -- know this? #abpoli
We're going to keep on this story. If you have tips about the voter data scandal, the Centurion project or the connections between the UCP and the separatists, you can email @rorywh.bsky.social: Rory (at) national observer
