Today we presented the European Climate Resilience Framework. Climate change is not a hoax. It is real, and it kills people. Europe has the knowledge, the observation capacities and the data. Resilience starts by turning that information into better decisions and a better response.

Absolutely incredible: Tuesday morning's high tide in #Miami exceeded the major flood threshold... that is the 1st time it has ever happened in the city's history without a hurricane storm surge. It tied (within 0.1 inches) the storm tides produced by Irene on Oct 15, 1999 and Wilma on Oct 24, 2005.

THE ENTIRETY of the rise in inflation in eurozone countries in the first half of this year is due to energy prices Chaining our societies to oil and gas is ruining ordinary people financially – just as it ruins our air, water and safe climate It's time to get Europe off oil and gas

1/3 This summer was the “Summer of Truth”. Wildfires, heatwaves and droughts caused immense human suffering and resulted in high economic costs. That is why today we present the Framework for Climate Resilience. What are we doing concretely? 🧵

This is the kind of study I wanted to see. Several thousand people were offered fixed prices for micromobility trips (no per-minute fees). I would've expected riders to go slower, but apparently not: "No clear effects on trip travel speed were identified." findingspress.org/article/1721...

Something I’d like to see research about: The extent to which per-minute fee structures of bikeshare co’s like Lime lead users to bike faster & more recklessly.

I watched the box-office flop Digger last night and loved it. I was reminded that unless you’re rich/ powerful, our future will be satire about the new “norm” of climate disasters to laugh at so we don’t cry. And Australia is great source material with all the fossil fuel projects we approve.

I'm going to try to do this cleanly. Today's right wing governments are networked to each other. Those networks are well-documented. You can read about them in books. Following the elections in one node of that network is good practice for understanding the U.S. node.

Dan Mauler 🎃@meelar.bsky.social

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

Recent work suggests scope for more road pricing interventions. In a forthcoming article (2nd screenshot), Jonathan Levine and I argue that before widening highways, DOTs should be required to conduct an evaluation of the costs and benefits of road pricing instead. www.nber.org/papers/w35887

Rivian's CEO predicts that the self-driving future revolves around personally owned cars— not robotaxis. Indeed, surveys show that's what most ppl want. But it would be a disaster for cities/climate b/c personally owned AVs would massively expand car use and sprawl. techcrunch.com/2026/10/19/r...

🔄 We need system change. But how can we help change the system?🔥 Global emissions are still not declining, and current climate policies fall far short of the Paris Agreement. We clearly need profound changes to our political, economic, and social systems. 🧵👇

I'm SO excited about this. Our streets should be seen as public spaces, not just territory filled by and controlled by cars. I love the idea of Oxford street being a human-centred space, designed around pedestrians. It'll take a while to develop but 🎉🎉🎉 www.theguardian.com/cities/2026/...

Congratulations to my friend Lula on his electoral victory. Democracy and multilateralism have won in Brazil. Europe’s partnership with Brazil is thriving. We will remain by your side for the years to come.

The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.

Last month observed the largest relative warming signal in the Arctic, which is not surprising for this time of year as the sea ice reforms. The tropical (El Niño) signal is really remarkable though. [Plot shows zonal-mean temperature anomalies, where latitude = y-axis (not scaled by distance).]
