And yet, here we are. I like data and technology, and therefore people and policy. Also unfunny jokes and mild snark. A bit of a political junkie, I’m afraid. Trying to let that go. Slightly American (or slightly British?). He/him. 📍United Kingdom

Hello! It doesn’t cost anything to repost but it helps me spread the word about my small business. My online shop is full of bold & colourful prints, homewares and cards. I’m also available for freelance design work and art licensing. gailmyerscough.co.uk

"The short-termism of universities burning through their social licence neatly parallels the roll out of the resource-hungry, carbon intensive data centres on which AI depends. In both cases, the underlying philosophy might be rendered as après moi, le déluge (after me, the flood)"

I found this story very compelling, perhaps because it is, as the title says, Far, Far Away (gift link) www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/w...

🧪 A new study found care recommended by LLMs costs 3.2x more than plans from treating physicians ($314 vs. $97 per visit at Medicare rates). Across 200 real clinical encounters, AI ordered 5.6x more specialist referrals and nearly 2x as many new medications. #MedSky

"Same foods" are another reason why parents should be seeking autistic wisdom: Otherwise how would one know how important same foods can be for a very young and/or nonspeaking autistic child? And how great is the risk that that same child's distress over food gets dismissed as "autistic behavior"?
Props to autistic 'same foods' (self-selected, dependable, repeated foods), as they can be "vital for emotional regulation, stability, & joy" and also when discussed in community may provide "connectedness & reduced isolation through shared experiences." New paper: neuroconverse.org/index.php/jo...
I don’t understand the notion of pardons. If they did whatever they were accused of, which acceptance of a pardon implies, surely the only morally acceptable way to get them off is to say what they did shouldn’t be a crime in the first place? Aware how incredibly naive this must sound.
This is literally the end of the rule of law. If a President can pardon people committing crimes on his behalf - and the Supreme Court says he himself can't be prosecuted for crimes committed as part of his job - then the government becomes a lawless entity able to violate our rights without limit.

once again I'm posting Harold Wilson's "Little Things That Mean A Lot" memo and list because I genuinely think a lot more politicians should have a copy of it pinned up next to their desk
People who complain that Burnham is "wasting his time" on things that are very easy and low-cost for the government but make a significant difference to people's everyday lives don't understand politics imo. If this was all he was thinking about as prime minister, sure, I would worry, but it's not

Likewise New York. No space for umbrellas, and rain there often comes with wind that will shred your umbrella in three seconds. Raincoat technology is quite good.
Londoners should do like they do in Seattle and stop using umbrellas. Seattle gets just as much rain, but the only people who use umbrellas are tourists. Locals wear raincoats. It's so much more civilized. No sharp bits poking eyes or shoulders.

It might be a bit more complicated. The remarkable thing about the United States is that people pulling in this kind of big money don’t feel safe, however cushy their life seems to others. Feeling secure in the States is reserved for the truly obscenely wealthy, i.e., the billionaires.
I think the real finding from surveys like this is that a lot of self-pitying rich people don't know what "paycheck to paycheck" means. If you are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars annually on voluntary expenditures like prep school tuition, you don't count. finance.yahoo.com/economy/arti...
