since California ballots are now out: prop 40 is the billionaire tax, and you should vote yes to stick it to them but both props 41 and 42 are designed to retroactively cancel the billionaire tax because they’re afraid they can’t beat it at the ballot box yes on 40, no on 41 and 42

A limited number of crab and frog facts advent calendars are now available at SquidFacts.net! These need to be made by hand, so we’ve been phasing them out but I was very lucky to have some help this week making some more in the lead up to December. Get ‘em while they’re here! SquidFacts.net

Dear indie dice makers - I want to buy your math rocks. I really do. But if you aren't talking about calibration and balance and assuring me your dice are going to perform their function properly, I'm not buying, no matter how sparkly, glittery, gothy, etc. your dice are.

Dear small indie dice making companies: want me to buy your delicious math rocks? Then you need to be talking about calibration and balance.

Hey friends! I am seeing that a certain Awful Lady and her unbroken record of sociopathic harm is back in the discourse. And boy. She really sucks. But maybe we can take this opportunity to highlight and celebrate children's authors who AREN'T transphobic pieces of shit. Great. I'll start...

Once again: anyone in the northeast, or willing to drive there - two bonded cats have lost their owner to cancer, and desperately need a new home. (If it matters to you in any way, I know and will wvouch for Shecky, he’s a real one 👇👇👇)

the national debt crossed $40 trillion this week and not one person in charge called it unaffordable. that word only comes out for the school lunch, the insulin cap, the raise. the debt isn't a limit on what they'll spend. it's the excuse they save for anything that would reach you.

The allegations of plagiarism that Cofnas surfaced? Liverpool John Moores had already investigated & cleared him & is *still* not being included in most articles. Jason Stanley explains why again there was a basic failure of journalistic understanding & why people took Cofnas’s framing over LJM’s

#HeadsUp: War for the Oaks, by Emma Bull, is on US Kindle sale for $3; I got some for random giveaway. This is one of the first, if not *the* first, urban fantasy books, dealing with the fae in Minneapolis. Highly recommended.

The withering of the year has come early. The land tells its distress in brittle grass bleached as bone, tells it in paths made of furious dust. It screams to us through drought cicatrix of cracked earth. We walk a territory of trauma. We should expect ghosts. – #DAKilroy

I want you to understand that they are jumping through all of these hoops to avoid tax bills that are, in many cases, $50 grand. Or $100k. Yes, to normal folks that is all the money in the world. But these people *routinely* spend that on weekend vacations. They would _definitely_ give it at a gala.

I don't really have an objection to the CEO saying Bluesky is open to all; it's kind of his job to do that. But as others have pointed out, the design of the site means it's harder for trolls/bots/chuds *and also* influencers/hypebeasts to get traction. The "bubble" here is actually normal humans.

*swoons and fans self* My goodness!

Am I the only one who doesn't like em dashes because they touch the letters? I need some personal space between my letters and my dashes

You know you've hit peak adulthood when you're super excited to receive the new portable Bissell cleaner you just ordered.

I want the Machine Learning tool that can spot cancer cells through pattern recognition. I do not want the Copyright Infringer 9000 that generates CSAM.

Just loving how John Cleese, now reduced to one of his own caricatures, rages about immigrants coming to the UK and failing to accept "our" culture, from his home in ... (checks notes) ... Nevis in the Caribbean.

A journalist has asked me to find them an entomologist for a story they’re doing on mosquitoes. Any entomologists down?

And he's here on BlueSky @imkeithdavid.bsky.social! Maybe we can entice him to post more often, and then we'd have both Space Dads over here.

Taylor Farms CEO goes to the White House to kiss the ring and a day later the FDA is saying the cyclospora sample was a false positive. Here's the thing: could it have been a false positive? Definitely! Could you have gathered the necessary data to figure that out this fast? No. Fucking. Way.

Hey cat-shaped friends: what OTC allergy meds are safe for cats? I have one feral who has just the worst allergies (yes, they are definitely allergies, it happens every year since he showed up) and I'd love to try a small dose of something to see if it would make him less miserable.

And here is the desired end. None of us believe news we don't 'feel' to be true. 20 years of grinding independent ethical journalism into partisan sausage, it fractures reality. There's no commonly-held truth. Now I read the BBC, Al-Jazeera, or EU news to know how many living senators the US has.

My wee bebe Western Serviceberry is in the ground! It took me six days to do something it would have taken someone stronger probably 20 minutes to do, but it's done! Also planted a Sourberry / Fragrant Sumac in the spring, so that's another native habitat goal accomplished this year. Super happy :)

I just saw someone say that hindsight is 20/20 on Graham Platner, and let me just say that if you did not see this coming, your vision for such things needs to be checked.

Me reading a poem from Everything Will Swallow You just now, with added Jim (who is a big fan of the oral storytelling tradition and can be relied upon to turn up from wherever he’s been hanging out any time I read aloud).

Oh are we talking about the ways the groundswell of transphobia has harmed us? Sure, let's do this. A depressing thread by me, a trans southerner in exile.

yes it can

This is a fight between the volunteers of the Democratic Party and the consultant/billionaire class of the Democratic Party. That's what it is.
