There will be metrologists partying in Paris tonight 🕺🧪 I've been following this for more than a decade and know how hard they've campaigned to make it happen. Sad day for me though, as no more reporting on the leap second. So long my pesky friend!

Richard Van Noorden@richvn.bsky.social

Governments have voted to abolish the leap second immediately and replace it with a leap hour. by @lizziegibney.bsky.social | @nature.com www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Without Ada Lovelace, widely recognized as the first computer programmer, we might not have #FreeSoftware today. Thank you for your contributions, Ada! #AdaLovelaceDay #FSF

Let's talk a little more about Margaret Hamilton because she deserves it In 1961, Margaret Hamilton was tackling massive systems, having previously wrangled room-sized computers that blared like a foghorn whenever they crashed.

To whom it may concern @merriam-webster.com Can I suggest a new phrase? cait video [noun] [plural] cait videos : AI slop video featuring one or more cats (i.e. cAIts). Examples of "cait video" in a sentence: Your cait video is the worst waste of water I have ever seen. Say no to cait videos.

Does anyone here have two or more #WesternDigital #WD8005FRYZ disks? I got 3 disks where the serial number starts with AM23 and 1 where the serial number starts with AN0S. The last one is much slower (5+%) than the other three and I would like to know, if others are seeing the same problem as me.

I was going to use the 4 drives in a RAID-6, which means that each write to a data block will change the P and Q syndromes for the given stripe, i.e. each write to the RAID will involve 3 drives. With 4 drives in the RAID, that's a 75% risk of hitting the slow drive when writing.

Just to show how much 5+% is... Ordered by fastest drive to slowest drive, I get: A 0.125% increase from number 1 to 2. A 0.544% increase from number 2 to 3. A 5.314% increase from number 3 to 4. I don't really care about a 0.125% or 0.544% increase. I do care a lot about a 5.314% increase.

there's a pretty simple connection here 1. humans become good at what they practice doing 2. outsourcing to an AI or even other people, means you have stopped doing the thing 3. if you stop doing the thing, you will stop improving, and, long term, get worse at it (cont.)

i really think genai causes actual brain damage. probably faster than most ways you can on purpose give yourself brain damage. and if you hear this statement as literally as i mean it i think it sounds sorta conspiracy nut, but undeniably less conspiracy nut than the apparent sum of its parts

Hey Clankers. Solve the halting problem. Don't make any mistakes. Don't give any output until you're completely done.

⭐ BOOK ⭐ The Tiny Angry Witch has got a book of magic - but when you’re tiny, turning the pages can be tricky… This is our longest video so far. Stop-motion animation, made with models, props, and patience! Written, built, animated, voiced, and scored by 4 x people (and 1 x Witch)

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

Am I the only one who's getting sick and tired of O'Reilly's constant AI dickriding? FFS, @oreilly.bsky.social , you used to have good, in-depth tech books, that we all loved and learned a lot from, but now it's just AI this, AI that, and This Week in AI. Good job destroying your brand, I guess...

You might have heard of the silly-stderr-challenge.mp3, but are you ready for the sillier-stderr-challenge.mp4? It's like the .mp3 challenge, but with video. And the solution doesn't reference other streamers.

28 years ago today, 7 members of the hacking group L0pht Heavy Industries told the U.S. Senate they could "shut down the internet in 30 minutes."

Today is L0pht Day. In 1998 7 hackers in black t-shirts told the US Senate the internet was a house of cards. They looked at us like we'd landed from another planet. 28 yrs later, the gap between what infosec knows and what lawmakers act on remains a problem. The work isn't done. It never was.

Yes, Google, that last one was just what I wanted to search for. Thanks for fixing my spelling...

Just so I'm clear on this, computer memory has tripled in price because a bunch of it that hasn't been produced yet has been ordered to populate GPUs that aren't installed in data centers that aren't built yet in order to service a demand that doesn't exist to make profits that don't happen.

On October 30th 1969, at 06:30 UTC, the first message ever was sent via #ARPANET. And it all went downhill from there... #TodayInHistory

We lost Dennis Ritchie on this day 14 years ago. Father of the C programming language. Co-developer of Unix. Never forget the man who helped build the foundation of modern computing, yet whose passing was so brutally overshadowed by a sleazy salesman who disowned his own daughter.
