Many comments on the great election victories in Brazil and Serbia state that the authorian right is in decline or that voters have rejected far-right authoritarianism. That is a wrong interpretation of what happened. Progressive movements mobilized and beat the authoritarian right. That's different

Currently wondering what message the UK govt thought it was sending by dressing up the Minister for Net Zero in a literal Shell logo.

On the day we remember the horror at Aberfan, caused by the corporate greed of fossil fuel companies, a new gas field at Jackdaw is set to open We don't learn do we?

Caroline Coetzee reposted

Approving the Jackdaw gas field solves none of our problems, while contributing to the existential crisis of climate breakdown. The government has privileged special interests above the general interest. It's a shameful, cowardly decision.

‘Islamists’?? Seriously? More I think about it, the more this piece has less value as analysis of France and more value as a window into the worldview in a decent chunk of British media

It's so tedious having to listen to people say "if you don't Labour then our lives will be worse off" and then listing a handful of policies which make them feel better, while ignoring the far more substantial number of Labour policies which strip rights and make life worse for vulnerable groups. 4/

You have to choose. You can't be nice to everyone. Appeasing corporations and billionaires means abandoning everyone else. When it comes to policy, it's us or them. And for far too long political leaders in this country have sided with them. If Burnham is to survive, this is what he needs to change.

The week started for me with Kendra Preston Leonard, then Dolly, now Tim Curry. The first of these is the most personal. Kendra played a major role in developing my confidence as a writer and was a brilliant artist, scholar & person. I'm not superstitious but I don't want to see what tomorrow brings

It’s so intellectually dishonest for anybody to cast Dolly Parton as apolitical. It’s so cynical. It tells me that they think everybody’s values are aesthetic, just for show.

Is there a connection between an institution parading a lone Black figure as evidence of its munificence, & also turning a blind eye to 'racial science' networks on its campus, & accepting dodgy donations while having secret talks with Reform? You can decide.

Aside from its obvious transphobia, this is easily the most misogynistic thing the EHRC has ever done. Women have to look a certain way or some whacko will demand to see your genitals. Congratulations. What a victory for feminism.

I know he has a lot on, but in the midst of a ferocious drought, fires, heat events and severe threats to food production, it would be quite edifying to hear Andy Burnham mention climate breakdown.

The role of the r4 in radicalising boomers can't be underestimated. The people I've known for years who come out with unexpectedly right-wing opinions seem to have r4 on in the background constantly. As pernicious as facebook and more insidious. Just a gentle soundtrack of background fascism.

We should never forget how the BBC has changed this country by giving endless airtime to Nigel Farage and other rightwing extremists, while shutting out progressive voices.

"I'd kill for my child" okay but would you put aside your preconceived notions of gender or sexuality for your child? would you apologize to your child when you're wrong? would you tell your child they can be whoever they want to be, and mean it? your child doesn't need more killing in their name

There are people who lost loved ones to the UVF or UDA and co and every year have to see their flags despite both groups proscribed as terrorist organisations. Meanwhile, the UK gov arrests nans and priests for supporting Palestine Action, a group that has never killed anyone.

"Scrap" not "water down", and boot Mahmood out of position and onto the backbenchers, if not remove the whip, while he is at it.
