I've found something! This blog post is a good high level criticism of the issues #ATProto Spaces present for certain types of apps. If you want, for example, reviews in a review app to be private but now you want to make it public and indexable, Spaces work against you here. The only solution I…

I wish there was more recent criticism of ATProto and Bluesky from people who know at least a little about what they're talking about, because there are still some serious issues regarding decentralization. Bluesky itself is still mostly on its own PDSes and AppView, and DID:PLC is still centralized

…could think of would be to make a public record which links to the Space and let apps index that. If it's public, then anyone can see it. If it's private, only selected people can see it. The benefit here is that you can easily make something public or private without losing references to it.

I'm not sure how easy this would be to get working with Constellation or an AppView. AFAIK (I could be wrong) I don't think things collect backlink to Spaces, so you'd have to make the public record even if it's still private and have things refer to that.

Agreed. We need to build apps that corporate spots cannot replicate instead of taking development cues from them. Making people choose this over that is just re-creating the same issues we've had for the last two decades. We shouldn't be building today's apps by yesterdays myopic paradigms.

this also goes for indies btw, which is why the 30% cut steam takes is so egregious. that 30% is often the difference between one and done, or a studio that gets to make a second and maybe third game. and it would cost them literally nothing to take no cut for the first 100k, it's a rounding error

Thomas Marrone@thomasthecat.bsky.social

Most studios that generate an overnight hit are actually on the 3rd or 4th title. Blizzard, Larian, Arrowhead, these places had several games under their belts before their first true blockbuster. Like George RR Martin they had been grinding XP for years before becoming a household name.

Bluesky, frustratingly, is doing nothing to promote to users that "you can move off our servers!" and yeah, it makes sense why, but they built an entire protocol around it and have now left that burden on us to teach non technical users why and how to move off Bluesky, and even if you do, you can…

…still get blocked from Bluesky's AppView, effectively hiding you from almost all Bluesky users. That's an enormous amount of power they have here, so there is no incentive for them to change or do better as an organization. Bluesky has become a platform and doesn't seem to be changing that.

not even LLMs, you could think outside the box and use semantic analysis and other categorization stuff to make for example labelers and lists i guess

and that's saying something seeing how reactionary Big Tech itself is. If you want to critique capitalism or big tech or Amodei or Altman, do that, but you're not much better when you demand that people do more Hard Work so you can feel virtuous about using their freely provided product.

like, it genuinely gives off plantation owner vibes. "how dare you automate your manual labor. how dare you don't gratify me with your Effort". listen to yourselves. it becomes increasingly hard to ignore how reactionary anti-AI is.

honestly, i think the people who yell at people doing things for free that they're using claude to do those things for free faster and more efficiently are *actively terrible* people who are literally screaming at hobbyists to provide free labor for their sensibilities

at this point we should all just bury our servers under 6 feet of concrete

I still maintain that AT Protocol labellers won't be useful until we have labeller declarations that aren't tied to Bluesky and do declare what collections they operate over (what collections do they consume, what collections they label, etc)

before seeing this: haha eMudhra shouldn't be a CA anymore after seeing this: oh, no, what the fuck? they actually shouldn't be a CA anymore

This is an absolutely astounding press release from eMudhra. No apology, a suggestion that the researcher who found their private keys must have used AI, and an attempt to shift blame to auditors... wow. emudhra.com/en/press-release/emudhra-statement-distrust-global-tls-intermediate-root-ca

I've said it before and I'll say it again. When we have our next dem president/congress, I will at some point criticize them for not reversing all of trump's anti-trans bullshit and be met with smug libs pointing out that they rescinded the military ban so we can go die to further American...

In November, Dems will likely win big. Liberals will feel relieved. In 2028, a milquetoast corporate Democrat will win the presidency, spend 4 years maintaining what Trump did as liberals go back to brunch. Then, in 2032, as life keeps getting worse, we’ll get something like President T Carlson.

if you want to be more independent of bluesky, the easiest way is to move where your account is stored. pds moover makes finding a new home for your account simple, and takes advantage of bluesky's locked-open tech to ensure a single entity take away your relationships or can't delete your posts.

A month in the works, I am happy to announce the newest version of PDS MOOver! - OAUTH!!!! - A brand new cow thanks to @goose.art! - A dedicated rotation key tool - A directory to find your next PDS, as well as typeahead for PDSs. - 🧙based forms for migrations and recoveries - QOL everywhere
