Hi, I’m a sighted alt text user! Here are some reasons I use it: - Slow Internet on an airplane - I’m over 40, I have no idea who that celebrity is - Bluesky broke images again - My vision sucks and that text is too small to read otherwise - Conveys further context and authorial intent

Yes, incompetence of people building systems being hacked. This is not new. A lot of human-built systems are not well built. AI is very good at poking holes. Nothing to do with consciousness or being rogue. If nothing else, AI is very good at destroying human-built systems. This IS the story

Dr Abeba Birhane@abeba.blacksky.app

over the past few weeks several AI evaluation/cybersecurity experts have explained how what's happening is a result of human incompetence rather than "AI going rogue". I'm begging the media to show a shred of journalistic integrity and stop parroting what altman or amodei say

💯 This is pretty much where I stand on AI

Tom Coates@tomcoates.bsky.social

Okay, quick post on AI apocalypse conversations. I see one group of people talking about how the “Doomers” are talking about sentient computers who decide spontaneously to destroy all humans by programming machines to produce bioweapons or to take hold of killing robots through spite.

Are we mad at this because they’re rich or because women are only good parents if they sacrifice everything for 18 years? It’s odd seeing all the men quoting this to dunk on it and call it ridiculous. This is pretty honest about the emotional and physical labour required for raising children

Rob Larson@ironicprofessor.bsky.social

I’ve been writing about the rich for years and ho boy, this one

If Mete is eliminated it’s assets would be sold. Probably to Oracle or some other equity abhorrent company. Or is there a scenario where FB actually shuts down?

Sonia Silva ❤️@vallygirl.bsky.social

The complete elimination of Meta would yield unambiguous, far reaching benefits for global society.

De ce que je comprends c’est aussi coupé pour les américains, l’injonction du gouvernement étant basé sur la nationalité et non sur le territoire, et donc impossible d’appliquer en pratique 🤪🤦‍♂️🤣🤷‍♂️

I am so mad about this. AI coding tools can be put to *great* use, and THIS ISN'T IT. Great AI use case: "help me find my bugs before my users find them" Not great AI use case: "half-ass my job for me"

Hillel@hillelwayne.com

The exploit: 1. Change your IP address to the target's geolocation and tell the support you've been hacked, asking them to send a reset to attacker email 2. No step 2. Meta's CISO immediately resigned. Gergely had inside contacts: the code was written by AI, reviewed by AI, while tokenmaxxing

Strange sentiment - feeling joy at seeing your hometown in flames… I hope for an end to this madness. Russia could end it any day but chooses not to, at the price of suffering for Ukrainians but also Russians. Since the beginning of the war, 4% of Russian men of active age are dead or wounded!

The Kyiv Independent@kyivindependent.com

⚡️Update: Zelensky confirms Ukrainian strike on St. Petersburg Oil Terminal. President Volodymyr Zelensky and the General Staff confirmed that Ukrainian forces struck the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal in Russia's Leningrad Oblast in the early hours of June 3.

I know that Russians do know that their state does not care about them, but I hope one day they’ll learn that the solution is not individual preservation and isolation but a push for a different future for all. In the meantime: Слава Україні!

Just turned in final revisions on "AND LOKI IN HIS PRISON" It's going to exist at last, everyone!!! Big, deeply-built, intricate Norse myth fantasy. Book 1 of "HANGED GOD'S GAME" Coming from Tor Books Summer 2027

When I spotted this set on the lego website (I was shopping for duplo for my daughter) it took me less than then 5 min to decide that I needed this 😅

Everyone is trying to argue this but this creator is a Christian who has said that movies shouldn't have "an agenda" and I think people need to think a little bit harder about the internal consistency of religious belief systems. There is no conflict here

Guys, it’s fine. It’s probably DNS. Or BGP. Or us-east-1 Frankly, the entire Internet is made of duct tape and popsicle sticks held together by bubble gum and string and it’s amazing that anything ever works at all

Beautiful code was always an idealistic concept that most humans were unable to achieve. Last years before AI were all about how to empower humans without gatekeeping on loosely defined, abstract, subjective rules

2006: Less is more, don’t repeat yourself 2016: Beautiful code prevents technical debt 2026: trillions of lines of generated spaghetti code that generate other spaghetti code will save us

I am starting to believe that AI coding will be useful and used because it’s not about creating perfect code, it’s about at scale replacing mediocre human produced artifacts with mediocre computer produced artifacts. And a lot of people’s jobs are already about managing streams of mediocre outputs.

I don’t understand many takes I see on how US actions in Venezuela create precedence for Russia, China or Iran. They already doing it. Especially Russia. They tried to grab Zelensky several times. China will try something like this in Taiwan when they are ready. They don’t need Trump’s example

Wildly different things, tasks, techniques, subspecialties being lumped into "AI" and then being conflated with each other, doesn't help. Different types of models vs the techniques to train them vs the tasks they are supposed to accomplish, all under "AI".

My understanding is that “left behind” refers to the hypothetical future where AI will end all other software. This premise, is the reason why billions and trillions are being invested. It is absolutely a wild gamble. There is absolutely no guarantee that it will happen.

Back to being left behind. If this scenario happens, 99% of software industry will become obsolete and disappear. There is absolutely nothing that anyone will be able to do to save their business 🤷‍♂️

A lot of people are posting things about how bad it is to rely on AI for lit reviews but also as a society we have made it extremely difficult for non-scholars to access bodies of literature!! Of course people want this!

Cat Hicks@grimalkina.bsky.social

One of the best things I ever did years ago was try to follow junior scholars saying interesting things and it always paid off in my having exposure to really good contributions over the years. Unfortunately with old science Twitter gone really hard to find that again!

Maybe this will make it clearer: We went from horse and buggy to interplanetary rockets with less money, time, and human labour than we did as an industry moving from spreadsheets in a TUI to spreadsheets in a GUI That should be fucking shameful as an industry. wtf is going on??

Paul Chavard reposted

I hear this often, but if people were trying to replace programming languages why would they be trying to generate so much programming language output though? I think it's pretty clear that people want multiple things here

Your planetary winding number is the number of times you have circled the North Pole in total since being born. It's tracked by longitude. It can be fractional. For most people the number is 0 or close to it. If you fly east from the US to Europe to Japan and then back to the US, that adds 1

It’s fine to say that violence is never the answer, but I can’t help but observe that for Charlie Kirk violence was always the answer, and it was the only answer he offered, and, because of the privilege that he refused to admit he had, he could enact it from a comfortable and respectable place.

Paul Chavard reposted

Ezra didn't have to say anything; no one would care. But he did. So now you can choose whether he thinks the existential threat to basically any minority that Kirk spent his career selling is no big deal—or "No People Involved"—or if he was born on the plastic-plugs-in-the-sockets baby idiot planet.

The reality is many task skills we learn, we forget and then need to learn again. The reality is that all modern careers are strange historically situated ways of doing things, not inherently The Best Way for our minds. Hell screens aren't even good for our eyes and it's not like we've fixed that.
