If the real priority was actually protecting girls from actual men who pose a risk to them in sports, it would make much more sense to advocate for banning male coaches and male doctors. And I’ve never, ever ever heard that suggestion, because that’s not really what this is about.

A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

This is symptomatic of a broader, potentially destabilizing trend in AI. It has become trivially easy for people to use AI to make functional clones of software that live in a copyright grey zone. www.404media.co/video-game-r...

MARIO IN HALO style AI mods dont just top out at like fifteen minutes of novelty, they also aren't really made for you to play - they're for creating reels where you gawk at them to rake in ad rev

AI art is shite for many reasons. But significantly because it's an intensification of the commodification of culture

Ppl meme about GRRMs descriptions of food but it works so fast to convey not just likes and preferences of a character but also what they react and respond to, what they can afford, what they want to present, etc

I think cheating on your partner is wrong, but I think it should be some encouragement to young men who think they're not attractive enough to find a partner that a guy as weird looking and devoid of charisma as ethan klein was able to find at least 2 people who were into him

today is your reminder that the 'Guennol Lioness', a proto-Elamite statuette, confirms evidence that humans have been hot for massive furry women since at least 5000ish BCE, contemporary with our invention of the wheel and the first cohesive writing systems

Traditional barriers to entry kept out bulk slop up to a point, but give us... polished slop. Candy gruel. AAA games and MCU movies. We need different barriers. That open the door to weird, even inept, outsiders without all the flatly worthless crap that drowns out the weird and interesting.

If you impose even very modest time and effort costs then the value proposition disappears. We shouldn't evaluate for quality per se -- there's value in "bad" art -- but we gotta evaluate for effort and intent. Or at least, evaluate for it's obvious absence.

You don't want to filter out the 'bad'. Or even the incompetent. You want to filter out the lazy, the careless, and the soulless. The stuff that just isn't even worth criticizing for its failures. That shouldn't be too hard. The rewards for making slop are meagre, it's just easy to do it in bulk.

The AI slop deluge just intensifies a problem that we've had for the entirety of "Web 2.0" - huge volumes of lazy crap. Frankly, we need curation and gatekeeping. Barriers to entry. Not based on wealth, status, social connection -- but some obstacles that specifically disincentivize slop dumping.

Speedrunning, as an ethos, is the way forward. Collective problem solving that engages with cracking the tech where it meets the user, all done in the spirit of play and challenging the prescribed narrative.
