letterboxd.comA ★½ review of Shelby Oaks (2024)I think the creators of this movie came up with the jump scares first, and then built a movie (and mythology?) around them. But this movie doesn't know what it wants. I imagine the pitch meeting to be like "I want to do a traditional horror movie where there is a Big Evil™ and we can build a story around that" "What about building a franchise? We could have a mythology around the big bad?" "Ehh, I dunno, we can maybe put strings in there, but I dunno if I want to commit to a franchise" "What about found footage?

I don't honestly care about that, I'm here for the average to above average found footage stuff. And while this movie lives very much in the "average" realm for found footage, it's kind of remarkable as a "world building" piece. I mean, this is Hell House LLC - it had less meat on the bone than Paranormal Activity. I have to say that I'm not a fan of this whole true crime approach to modern found footage. Night #14 - Dream Eater

letterboxd.comA ★½ review of Dream Eater (2024)Alex Lee Williams basically carries this movie. I dunno if it's a bad script, bad acting, or just a bad concept, but this isn't a very interesting movie. It also cannot really decide if it's found footage or traditional horror. The acting (outside of Alex) is bad. And, again, I'm not sure if it's a skill issue or a script issue - but it's bad. There are some cool moments, though I think they wanted the last 10 minutes to hit harder than it did. And, of course, the camera just wouldn't be there.

Night #13 - Buffet Infinity

letterboxd.comA ★★★ review of Buffet Infinity (2025)For the first 65-70 minutes, this is a 4-star banger. Just a perfect Kentucky Fried Horror Movie. But then it stays past the climax. And it shows us things we don't care about. Like, I don't need to know what happened - knowing that it happened is enough. The progression was perfect - watching society succumb to a Lovecraftian Horror from beyond via the majesty of local access television commercials was chefs kiss. I don't care what happened. I don't want an explanation. You had a near perfect climax, but then stuck around. Too bad.

The entire thing is dripping with an aura of "Bro, I'm gonna blow your mind with this next bit," and it's just the dumbest shit imaginable. Let's say we forgive the bad acting, the dumb premise, and even the fact it breaks the cardinal found footage rule about where the camera would and wouldn't be, it's still one star because it is wholly unbelievable. My father was a purist (he used to sing the theme song to the 50's Blob movie around the house while doing chores) and hated this movie. I was 7, so dad's opinion was still my opinion, which meant that I cataloged this as "meh" in my mind. But over the past few years, I'd find myself in conversations about the 88 Blob movie for one reason or another, and people kept telling me how good it was. I think my soul knew it was good, but my brain was still on

letterboxd.comA ★★★★½ review of Obsession (2025)There is a scene about halfway through Obsession where Nikki is speaking to Baron while she is asleep. And it is horrifying in a way that I think only nerdy, lonely kids can understand. That's kind of this whole movie though, I think. It's a movie about what it would look like if the shy, nerdy, lonely (loser) nerd got to make his wish come true - and what that actually looks like. There are definitely other themes here, but at it's core, its a movie about reading the fine print. About the reality of what your late night wishes

Night #2 - Willow Creek

letterboxd.comA ★★ review of Willow Creek (2013)Oh Bobcat, what are we doing? Willow Creek is a perfectly serviceable found footage movie for the first 45 minutes. It’s not a particularly remarkable one - the premise is boring, the characters are uninteresting, and nothing really happens - but it at least follows the rules. Then we get a 15 minute sequence that is both too long, too short, and some of the best found footage suspense I have ever seen. It is 100% carried by Alexis Gilmore’s performance - who is the lone bright spot throughout - and is excellent. The movie should have ended there. This

And yet, 60 minutes into this movie (when I started writing this review in my head), I was trying to figure out how I could justify giving it more than 3 stars.
