I had no idea that Helen Branswell was ill. I'm deeply saddened to hear of her passing. When I became CDC director, a very astute member of the CDC press office told me that I wasn't ready for a briefing unless I was ready for questions from Helen Branswell.

Here's the thing about statistics: there are statistics you do BEFORE you have information and statistics you do AFTER you have information.

Harpsichord music can be fun in short pieces, but when something starts pushing the 4m mark you and your ears begin to understand why people heard the piano and were like, "That's much better, I don't care how heavy it is."

Every game I put out gets "1" ratings on BGG before it is for sale. For funsies I'm gonna track the 1s on WS Pocket in real time. What are these people up to, who feel so strongly about a game they haven't even played? Game details were announced yesterday, and the first "1" is up. LET'S GO! 🧵

I thought I was doing a small story on confusion over the sudden disappearance of water fountains on a popular South Mississippi biking and running trail. What I found was a bigger story about homelessness, the meaning people find in the things they love, public infrastructure and civic engagement.

Mississippi Free Press@mississippifreepress.org

Water fountains disappeared from the Longleaf Trace in June as the board that governs it grew concerned about how homeless people were using its facilities. Runners and bikers who use the 44-mile trail fear the decision could have dire consequences in Mississippi's summer heat. buff.ly/pBXSvrI

2/3 one of the delights of larger Church of Scotland churches is that they so often have good collections of 20th Century glass (ironically, it's because stained glass was largely frowned upon until the late 19th Century). Douglas Strachan's war memorial window, 1922 in St Machar's, Aberdeen.

Sad to be missing #BTWD. Instead I’m enjoying some UK carbrained street failures. I think these bollards and the kerb cut suggest a pedestrian crossing. And it would make sense given the steps on the other side of the road. Four lanes, 40 mph limit, bad sight lines you would surely die!

Actually I am looking at that light in the middle of the roadway and it looks very much like an over-height belisha beacon. I think this was a pedestrian crossing that was withdrawn because it slowed down cars/was absolutely lethal

This is in Dundee, Alexandria’s Scottish sister city. It’s been so badly damaged by car infrastructure, maybe beyond repair.

NEWS: A federal judge has saved the 15th Street protected bike lane (for now), saying the decision to remove the lane running from Constitution Avenue to the Tidal Basin was "arbitrary and capricious and not the result of reasoned decision-making." It was to be removed this week.

It’s impossible to understate how important the 15th St bike lanes are to DC’s connected network, and they’re used by hundreds of people every day, commuters and tourists. This will be an enormous step back if it happens, and I encourage everyone affected to make a huge fuss

We’ve heard now from several reliable sources that federal agencies may remove a substantial chunk of the 15th St NW protected bike lanes near the National Mall in February, possibly as early as next week.

I don’t really know what I expect in posting this, but maybe some people see it and can learn from it. I’ll call it “lessons from an unwilling immigration attorney.” 1/

I don't have Washington Post money. But I do have a local news outlet and a belief that local sports journalism matters. If you're a WaPo sports writer looking at what's next, let's talk. Maybe we can figure something out together. DMs open.
