The lessons from Brazil and Serbia? Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right. Don't appease. Don't triangulate. Don't grovel. Don't say they have "legitimate concerns". Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.

A little thread on the People and Lula's win.

Calli Giovanini COMMS CLOSED@calligiovanini.bsky.social

It's another day, so let's talk about this. First of all, Lula didn't win the election alone. He won because more than half of the country FREAKED THE FUCK OUT and built a popular movement that organized several actions both irl and online.

@mlb.com shame on you for running that “liberals are the new racists” ad during the World Series. I mean do not take money for that kind of hateful propaganda. It sucks the joy right out of the game.

Hope. A thread.

Genuinely I don't know that it comes across to people who haven't been here to watch how almost unbelievable this was, just people taking something that looked impossible and dragging it kicking and screaming all the way to inevitability.

Meanwhile, pro-democracy, pro-Europe protesters in Tbilisi, Georgia, are tonight nearing their 700th consecutive day of protest against the pro-Russian government. They haven't missed a single day in the last 23 months.

Children of Owl was just chosen as one of the BEST YA BOOKS OF 2026 by Publishers Weekly!!!! I’m shocked and so grateful for the support! There are fifteen books on the list, and it’s an honor to be among them.

The achievement of Serbian students overthrowing Aleksandar Vučić can't be overstated. In 2024, they began protesting. In 2025, they transformed a protest movement into civil dissidence. In 2026, they became a political party — and two months later, crushed a corrupt state-entrenched authoritarian.

I got both the covid and flu shots a month ago and still I managed to pick up something vile on my trip to California. I like to think it's not as bad as if I hadn't been vaccinated but there is no fun right now.

With a millionaires tax on the ballot, they really should have waited until after Election Day to announce the construction of 72 luxury waterfront condos exclusively housing the expensive cars of rich people.

When a worker wears an Amazon vest, drives an Amazon van and delivers on an Amazon-controlled route, but Amazon denies they work for the company — that's exploitation.

If it looks like an Amazon delivery and drives like an Amazon delivery, then it's an Amazon delivery, right? Not according to Amazon. Big companies like Amazon have built a vast network of subcontractors who deliver their packages while shielding them from accountability.

A wonderful man and actor. Skerrit gave so much of his experience and oversight to Seattle during the years he served on the Citizen Advisory Committee to the Seattle Arts Commission, enriched theater and film here in the great Northwest and just made life a little better.

Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

This is actually the stuff of dystopian fiction. But they stole the dystopian fiction books to build their AI slop machines. AIC is right. Read for yourself. Write your own emails. Think your own thoughts and not the ones their algorithms are feeding you

AOC: "As AI begins to encroach in our society, their goal is to take your cognition away from you. AI's goal is to take your thoughts away from you, your ability to think away from you, so that you become dependent on a machine ... reading books is active resistance"

I heard a mellifluous voice and went out into the garden to see if I could identify the bird. Two eagles flew over and circled the evergreens then lit on a high branch across the way. Flying lessons. The sun on their white tails!

On 21 October, we celebrate #AppleDay. Dorset and Somerset folklore tells of Lazy Lawrence, a green-eyed pixy pony who gallops through orchards guarding apples. His name is said to refer to the inability to walk after drinking too much cider: “Lazy Lawrence has got your legs!” 🍎

Another name for Shepherd’s Purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris) is ‘Mother’s Heart’. In an old children’s game, one child would offer a playmate a tiny, heart-shaped seed pod. When it cracked open in their grasp, the cry went up: “You’ve broken your mother’s heart!” #FolkloreThursday
