The danger of a 3C world isn’t that everywhere gets 3C hotter. It’s that the global average hides how extreme things can get locally. Parts of Europe could face heat, drought and fire severe enough to make many places unsafe to live in. www.euronews.com/2026/10/27/e...

Yesterday on fallow land I saw plants that once buzzed with bees & insects before 2000… now silent. Pesticides didn’t just kill pests. They wiped out the pollinators that keep us alive. No bees = no food security. This is environmental terrorism by design.

Heavy rain at the wrong time is disrupting West African cacao production. Research in Ghana reveals that extreme rainfall during the flowering period directly damages crops, adding new climate pressures on farmers & fueling rising global chocolate prices. Victoria Schneider reports for #Mongabay.

Just 1% of what is really needed. We need - emission reduction - systemic changes reducing consumption of materials and energy - mindset shift and education - nature restoration and conservation on land and at sea, including high seas in international waters

It's going to take a LOT more than €30 billion for Europeans to adapt and survive the coming decades of climate change impacts. Try € tens of trillions.

The 2026 UNEP Emissions Gap Report is out: The Point of Return. 🌍🌡️🔥 It's sobering but actionable. Decades of inadequate climate action have closed off opportunities to limit warming, but ambitious action today can still prevent much greater harm. A thread of some of the highlights 🧵

In all the grandiose discussion about colonising Mars, I don't see much about how the soil is poisonous to us. This was only discovered in 2008. It contains perchlorates, which are environmental toxins here on Earth. Any human contact with Mars dust? Super-bad news in the long run. 1/

In Germany, only trees move less than cars. On average, cars are moved for 45 minutes a day, if they are used to get to work, there are 1,075 people per car. That's less than the average number of birds per tree. I guess.

#KeepTheTarget The next decade needs a horizon, and that means a strong 2040 renewables target. Europe should not have to choose between energy security, competitiveness and climate action. Renewables give us all three. So be vocal and push for high ambition on renewables for 2040.

I am a scientist – and the answer is climate change. Yes, there is nuance. Yes, it could take a long time to identify the precise mechanisms. But there is no question why ice and snow-related disasters are on the rise. Our planet is warming at an unprecedented rate, and humans are responsible.

The New York Times@nytimes.com

In Nepal, it will most likely take months for scientists to understand exactly what led to deadly flash floods that killed over 1,000 people and left thousands missing. Early theories posit glacier meltwater and a thawing permafrost could have contributed to bedrock collapse.

It may be that the new generation of scenarios don't even return to 1.5C, noting there is uncertainty in climate model projections. The scenarios that may be consistent with 1.5C with overshoot require rapid emission reductions, sort of happening immediately! Otherwise they are fantasy! 4/

In honor of the new UN climate report, which spreads the entirely unsubstantiated myth that we can remove and sequester enough carbon from the atmosphere to cool the whole planet down again, here’s a paper that looks empirically at one component of this myth. And it’s not pretty. #EndFossilFuels

A geologist and a systems engineer walk in to a bar... ...and start arguing about whether we can actually pump enough CO2 underground to hit net zero. That's more or less how this paper got started with @hdaigle.bsky.social. Read on to find more: iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1...

Wow, these sequestration rates (even in medium scenario) are not just unrealistic, they are fantastical. Our work on geological limits to carbon sequestration shows that even achieving 1 Gt/y will be challenging without significant tech breakthrough. Relying on CCS today is not a realistic plan!

The article also includes a first look at the carbon dioxide removal deployed in these scenarios (based on the IAM used in the marker scenario). Some scenarios deploy what I would consider unrealistic levels – particularly those we have slower near-term emissions reductions like "Medium-Low".
