My current bet is that fake people (read: creating/naming a consistent AI-generated avatar/voice) will not be a mainstream success. If anything, people will crave real people even more in a world awash in AI slop (non-derogatory.) Parasocial relationships will be bigger than ever, but not for fakes.

This touch screen MacBook thing is bonkers. Are they really going to announce such a huge thing at a little press event? Does macOS change at all? Whats even the point from a UX perspective?

Hungary's recent election was less free and more unfair than the upcoming US midterms, and pro-democracy forces still won. Similar point about Serbia's election this weekend. In normal democracy terms, America is in bad shape. But in consolidated authoritarianism terms, we're looking pretty good.

First, your taste probably isn't that good, most people have terrible taste. Second, most people don't care, they have terrible taste. Third, it's wild to think the robots will come *this far* but not be able to distill your preferences?

Indiana likes Michigan is right if you limit yourself to central and northern Indiana. Central to Southern Indiana, the answer is probably Florida. California likes Hawaii, 100%.

The New York Times wrote articles that were like "the impossible-to-characterize elusive politics of Elon Musk / he's lost interest in politics" right before he became *literally the largest GOP donor in history* the next election cycle. Twice. Two times!

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

This would be the most any person has donated in any election cycle. And #2 is also Musk, in 2024.

Three years ago, my dad said that all fish are the same shape. Out of spite, I decided to draw all 478 families of bony fish listed in Nelson 2016. There's still some stuff I need to edit and some fish I want to redraw but, after 985 days, I finished my big dumb fish project last night.

The early voting blog is updated! Dems won Tuesday in NV (barely) and lead by 4.4 points. Just under a fifth of the total vote is in, and I would guess Rs are nervous. What does it all mean? All the data you could ever want and more, and more to come! thenevadaindependent.com/article/the-...

2 things: Stephen Miller has negative charisma, please keep putting that guy on camera. Oz has no idea what do with his hands, which is weird because he was on.TV for decades.

Sam Bagenstos@sbagen.bsky.social

This story makes it sound like the major problem is that the Trump Admin did this w/in 60 days of an election. Yes, that's a real abuse. But the major problem is they're basically threatening to denaturalize an opposition legislator, based on racist insinuations. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/12/u...

Your taste will not save you. I don't think it's sensical to believe the robots can (or increasingly can, or eventually can) make anything you dream up but will need your essential human perspective to make something good.

First, your taste probably isn't that good, most people have terrible taste. Second, most people don't care, they have terrible taste. Third, it's wild to think the robots will come *this far* but not be able to distill your preferences?

A few thousand prompts is probably enough to train your taste onto a frontier model. I don't have a conclusion here. I also desperately want my (very good) taste to differentiate me and my output, but the maximalist AI prediction isn't a future with a human taste moat.

Coding agents reduce software development to a simple matter of: * specifying requirements * verifying correctness and quality * maintaining and operating software you didn't write As we all know, those have always been the easiest, most well-understood parts of the craft, so everything is fine!

This is maybe just an artifact of my codebases and projects, but the robots are happy to make a 10 line change or a 1000 line change, but I can't get a 100 line change to save my life.

I have 1000 balls in the air every day and it’s exhausting and overwhelming and I don’t think it’s ever going to change so I just need to learn to get energized by it?

I say this as a neighbor and someone who has been dozens of times: sidedoor bagel sucks. Staff is rude, orders incorrectly filled, I’ve been served yesterday’s egg and expired schmear, the process design for customers is stupid. Every few months i give them another shot and it’s never worth it.
