My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Happy 100th birthday, Winnie-the-Pooh! Did you know that Winnie was based on a real Canadian-British bear—and that his full name was WINNIPEG?

I can't stop thinking how wrong the tech bros have understood creativity and creators. Or even just having hobbies. #erliart

My Casio email subscription: Look at this sweet watch… Check out this cool retro watch… Buy this snazzy elegant watch… Isn’t this cute ring watch cute… Hey, how about a furry AI companion?

Isn’t this like if I was the one driving a car at 130km/h in a 50 and then yelling at everyone else in the car that we should slow down?

Dario Amodei, who co-founded Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot, called for a global slowdown of artificial intelligence development in a 3,800-word essay on Saturday. His appeal for a pause follows months of escalating concerns across the technology industry. nyti.ms/4AatwIK

Today, September 8, 2026 marks the 60th anniversary of Star Trek’s premiere on American network television. From the beginning, there was something special about this show. >> [more]

So basically people don’t trust news they get from social media while at the same time growing their use of social media as a news source.

Reuters Institute@reutersinstitute.bsky.social

Social media and video networks like Instagram, X and YouTube have now become the most widely used sources of news globally. Lead author of our Digital News Report Jim Egan explains what's happening. Read the report summary here: https://reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk/digital-news-report/2026

I really appreciate the simplicity of @theglobeandmail.com’s AI policy for contributors and reporters, which basically amounts to “don’t.” I especially like this: “If it involves ‘copying text into or out of a chatbot,’ that use of AI is not permitted.”

“We have every intention of continuing to invest and grow in Manitoba.” That’s the plan. Keep what makes Probe special, invest in the team, and make Winnipeg the hub for Abacus Data’s growth across the Prairies. CBC News on the acquisition: www.cbc.ca/news/canada...

cbc.caWinnipeg's Probe Research acquired by Ottawa-based Abacus Data | CBC NewsProbe Research, a Winnipeg-based firm that has gauged public opinion for 32 years, is getting a new owner and new name — but the faces will stay the same.

LEGEND! Congratulations, Kevin! Always enjoyed working with you.

Breaking news - I’ve retired! Yes, after 41-plus years in journalism - 38 of them at the Winnipeg Free Press - I’ve retired. A thread…

As Jabba the Hutt's son I'm often gatekept from progressive spaces due to preconceived notions about my family. At the same time, I acknowledge the reasonable concerns my presence would raise, and I'm working every day to unlearn the harmful attitudes instilled in me on my father's pleasure barge.

This is insane.

Boring News is marketed as a solution to declining local news in Canada. In reality, the website is AI news slop filled with errors, made up quotes and fake photos. My story for the @winnipegfreepress.com: www.winnipegfreepress.com/arts-and-lif...

Big @wealthsimple.bsky.social fan 🙋🏻‍♂️and they’ve done everything right…until now. Seems like an unnecessary move and terrible for PR. Just kinda lame.

Canada's National Observer@nationalobserver.com

Users of Elon Musk's X platform will be able to make trades in Wealthsimple, the company announced. “Bro straight up said ‘Canada is not a real country,’” one Reddit user commented. Wealthsimple is also pursuing bringing prediction markets to Canada, worrying experts.
