We are going to see a lot of ppl claiming, understandably, that the BBB has now provided Trump w a massive ICE army. That is incorrect. It has provided him with the funds to TRY. A 2017 DHS-OIG report said ICE would need to interview 500,000 ppl to get 10,000 new hires. Not easy!

The overarching point to this thread and the threads of mine nested in it (sorry abt that) is this: This is a poorly-designed proposal made by ppl w no interest in even cosplaying as serious policy makers. Fascism on the cheap by the indifferent. That does NOT mean be complacent! The point is:

in the history of the 21st century, the Biden presidency will be remembered as a footnote during the long Trump era. Stephen Miller, architect of this hell, will have shaped America more, in no small part because Biden, like Obama before him, left in place the infrastructure facilitating deportation

So here’s an additional stupid feature of “no tax on tips.” The Senate language applies only to “voluntary” tips which I’d read to exclude the increasingly common situation where a restaurant just automatically adds a 20% “service charge” that gets split among staff.

We're going to need Nuremberg trials when this is over, yes, and to send a significant number of people currently in the federal government to prison. But we're going to need an unwavering commitment to ostracizing the supporters of it, as well. Never accept them again in polite society.

I am once again confronting the fact that over the course of a decade of being called a hysterical Elon Musk hater I never came close to imagining the depth of evil he was actually capable of.

David Roberts@volts.wtf

Elon Musk casually, and illegally, dismantled USAID. According to a new study in the Lancet, that action will lead to *14 million* premature deaths between 2025 and 2030. Again: Elon Musk is directly responsible for 14 million coming deaths. 4.5 million will be children.

1) it was always fascism and fascism was the right word to use 2) they are building concentration camps and concentration camps are the right words to use 3) they are banning books and book bans is a fine way to describe the myriad ways they are banning them

The legislation is projected by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office to add $3.3 trillion to the 10-year deficit. These tweets from a United States senator were posted 10 days apart.

they ask politicians like Mamdani if they are communists but they never ask anyone if they are a fascist and that's all you really need to know

Republicans are now suddenly planning to TAX renewable energy, transforming the repeal of the IRA from a challenge to a full-blown crisis for American solar and wind. I spent the last 24 hours putting this story together to explain why. Please share! This is really important!!! @heatmap.news

There are only three political positions in America today 1) I like the fascism 2) I'll acquiesce to the fascism (reasons for this one vary: cowardice, access, denial, misguidedly thinking that acquiescence is savvy, etc) 3) I oppose the fascism The rest is details

“Independence day is canceled because of fear of secret police raids” is really a level of on the nose political symbolism you just can’t make up.

LA Times - Several communities in Los Angeles County have called off or postponed their previously scheduled Independence Day and July events, citing resident safety amid ongoing immigration enforcement raids.

SG Prelogar also teed up the constitutionality of universal injunctions when NDTX was enjoining Biden left and right, and SCOTUS passed.

IANAL but looks to me like the Biden administration asked SCOTUS to take up the universal injunctions question in Texas Top Cop Shop: www.supremecourt.gov/DocketPDF/24...

Everyone screaming antisemitism for the past two years for protesting a genocide is now going all out doing the most obscene, ham fisted racism imaginable towards Mamdani. Take any of the comments about him from elected officials and imagine saying that about Judaism or a Jewish person.

It’s fascinating to see the media wet its collective pants over Mamdani’s policy proposals and cast them as “extreme” when there are actual policies being enacted by this administration on a national level that are not only extreme, they are also unpopular, antisocial, and illegal.

There are horrors enacted at scale every day on this country. That there is not collective, 24/7 pants-shitting coverage on the daily slip into fascism is an indictment on the whole fucking system.

I was under no delusion that this is how it was always going to be. I am not surprised. I am just disappointed, and angry, and at the end of my rope. We will stop everything to catastrophize about one man who wants to make his city better, while another man burns this country to the ground.

We have bigger fish to fry than one prospective mayor’s platform, gang. They’re dragging the country, kicking and screaming, back to the miasma theory of disease, back to eugenics, back to concentration camps and institutionalized race-based violence, back to legalized robber barons.
