We need people to stop divorcing middle-aged comedians, our culture can't take the brunt of this

Amen

Running Dog@runningdog.bsky.social

I mean it’s good to see a bit of contrition, but “we gave our employees some software with no clear application which I assumed was magic and ordered them to use it for everything” needs a “so I have no choice but to resign” at the end. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

This week I witnessed experienced developers almost rage quit when having to code review the AI slop the new batch of juniors produce. Individual productivity != net productivity.

As an immigrant, there are two UK home biases that stand out: The media being absolutely awful, in a way that doesn’t happen elsewhere because… my best bet is its owner and staff actually being capable of feeling shame? And then there is foreign languages

flyingrodent@flyingrodent.bsky.social

Yes, people in this country do not really have any idea quite how, uh, remarkable and distinctive the British media are

Brits have no idea how hard it is to become conversationally fluent in a second language. I guess people just turn up from all over and kind of speak English, so how hard can it be? (Not including Americans in this generalisation, I’m not sure they are even aware there are other languages)

Whisper it, but a more meritocratic capitalism has drained the pool of capable public servants in a way that simply didn’t happen back in the days of sclerotic dynasties

I think learning that the opinion-makers we had come to rely on were of below average intelligence (and largely only concerned about their cocktail party friends) was also pretty significant.

Dear tv and radio producers. Thankyou for the invitation. But, no, I do not want to appear on your show to defend the idea that I am English, after 50 years of living and working here, because the increasingly feral right want to turn this into a "debate" and you cannot see how you're being played

Finally found a corner of the house where I can keep my guitar out on a nice little stand. Rest of family unimpressed. ”The hamster is not even cold in the ground yet”, they say.

"You've worked hard all your life accruing all that wealth via soaring house prices and nice defined-benefit pensions, and we think it's wrong for the state to touch it via inheritance tax. But it's totally fine for the government to deny your 24-year-old kid support based off of it"

Trump misstating and touting a meaningless deal over Greenland, while the entire Middle East security architecture falls apart due to his own actions, is emblematic of this administration’s foreign policy.

Remember the deal was: you give up collective bargaining and provisions to protect you in unemployment or ill health, and you gain cheap goods, social mobility and a house? And now nothing works, everything is expensive, the public realm is visibly degraded and about ten guys own the whole world.

Someone tried to be clever again and it didn’t work. People need to stop and ask themselves: will my users/customers/clients want this to be clever, or would they prefer it to be predictable?

My new electronic keyboard can play a vast multitude of backing accompaniments - rock, calypso, bossa nova etc. So I will not encourage my children to learn how to play music, a skill that will likely be obsolete in a few years from now.

I am SO going to repurpose this argument in defence of sacking Lindisfarne

What I love about the people answering “negative” is they are basically saying “the last thousand years? I don’t care for them”.

…would call ‘do-gooders’ - a hugely revealing insult if ever there was one. But it’s just not in the arsenal any more, because the mainstream British right wing has an unearned victimhood complex visible from the moon. Never has the world witnessed such a gaggle of whinging, self-pitying arseholes.

Remember the McDonalds interview guy? He was wrong on so many counts but this was an important aspect of life he understood very clearly

void * const@voidstarconst.bsky.social

Yes it is superior, but as someone hailing from the backwaters I feel I have to at least explain the ignorant reaction: the cosmopolitan way of life is not an option available to all, not without cost or risk

”A wealth tax will drive out investment” has got to be the most bullshit argument ever, capital in aggregate is institutional and international, and no country is going to be better off for having the idiot failsons of billionaires soaking up labour for pointless luxury

So many times I have thought this

Car rental places are cool because it seems like each time they are rediscovering how car rental works from first principles. Do we have cars? What is a car, even?

I'm sorry but "a huge number of NYC cabs now are remaindered EVs running grey market software written by some dude in a garage" is the most cyberpunk thing I've ever heard

JarekFA@jarekfa.bsky.social

I asked a driver how they service them since they’re no longer made. He said they have a guy they go to for all the software updates and all that. Even though, it has many missing typical car elements. (Like cruise control or power windows even I believe).

One of the weirdest culture shock moments I’ve had was, after a long time in London, visiting Vienna and being waited on by actual grownups and not just minimum wage 20-somethings swarming to the big city

Marie Le Conte@youngvulgarian.marieleconte.com

creating "community" isn't just about happening to have four walls and a roof, it's also about having the sort of society where, for example, wages in hospitality are high enough that people consider staying in those jobs for a long while, as opposed to doing it for a bit then escaping

You know who wasn't hounded to suicide for dodgy academic research? ANDREW FUCKING WAKEFIELD.

Fucking Christ alive. This is fucking horrific. Like the dude was obviously a fabulist and probably a plagiarist but SO ARE ALL FUCKING ACADEMICS. He was also still a vulnerable, autistic Black man and the entire campaign against him was motivated by racism. All these things can be true.

I do worry that when a proper economic downturn comes, we have built the perfect social media infrastructure for fomenting insane amounts of class hatred. And I’m kind of a pro-guillotine guy.

I’m not there yet but we are very much on a journey from ”Linux might be fun, but probably not worth the hassle” to ”Linux certainly won’t be fun, but still worth the hassle”

No no no it must be that you open a seemingly closed section and there’s a creepy guy just standing there

alix e. harrow@alixeharrow.bsky.social

i don't like to police genre, but it's not dark academia unless somebody gets squished in one of these bad boys

I was not really confident in anything before having them and it turns out I was correct

Hey parents of bsky: What are some theories of parenting you were very confident in right up until you had your own kids?

And how much they smell. Being at a gas station after a year of EV ownership is like being in a smokers car a few years after quitting.

I’d be more interested in knowing the total amount of gold than the weight of the heaviest individual bar, but then English is not my first language

The Economist@economist.com

Police found gold bars weighing as much as 74kg stashed at the home of Indonesia’s most senior anti-corruption prosecutor. If authorities thought they could go after him with impunity, they were soon disabused of the idea
