The top 0.1% aren't just profiting from the pollution that's accelerating climate change. They're also making money off of disaster preparedness, recovery and the surging prices caused by extreme weather. I call it the asshole feedback loop.

this summary does Harris dirty. her first argument is that impeaching Trump is a waste of investigative resources that should go elsewhere- presumably at cabinet members- instead
Kamala Harris: I think that going in the direction of impeachment is not a good idea.
I was in the Senate for the last go-round, and the votes aren’t there.
I think after the election, we all have to just also agree that our attitude has to be to get stuff done…

My position on it is that a vote on impeachment makes everybody who likes the current administration say "I like this and want it to continue," a position for which they can later be held accountable, rather than staying silent and later claiming they never liked or supported it.
i hope if nothing else, the media ignoring this finally stops people from saying "the reason the media doesn't run drumbeat scandal coverage on trump the way they did on Clinton is because Dems don't make a big deal of it like Republicans do"
just heartbreaking stuff
Alex Pretti's mother calls out ICE and the Trump administration for killing her son and smearing his name, and calls for justice to be done.
Breaking news: Brazil’s leading right-wing politician, Flávio Bolsonaro, effectively conceded defeat to the incumbent left-wing president, after President Trump indicated he wouldn't intervene despite saying that the vote “looked like another rigged election.”
A depressing trend I’ve seen since the rise of AI agents is people outsourcing emotional connection to AI.
People are delegating how they communicate with their kids, spouses and parents to AI agents.
AI should handle our work so we can spend more time with friends and family, not vice versa.
Meanwhile, one of the most harmful policy movements in America right now is a property tax revolt that is shifting us away from our most economically efficient tax, all so property owners can have a little more in their pockets next month.
NEW from me:
Last year, Mark Carney set a goal to double Canada's non-US exports by 2035. Today, he's already halfway there
In response to Trump's tariffs & threats, Canadian businesses, consumers, & even tourists are taking difficult steps to decouple from the US🧵

interestingly this interest in black voters doesn’t extend to the republican effort to deprive them of federal representation, nor do they seem interested in asking whether republican candidates are burdened by the fact that trump talks like a klansman
JUST POSTED: Today at The NYT we are publishing a major investigation into how President Trump used his executive powers to expose millions of Americans to greater cancer risks.
A six month-long investigation built on more than 10,000 pages of FOIA records. Read it

Czech President Petr Pavel says a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine was “quite close” – until Donald Trump lifted sanctions on Russian diesel.

There was a global, five-alarm cybersecurity crisis this week triggered by A.I. MSM mostly ignored it. Political elites mostly ignored it. A.I. discourse continues to overindex on killer robots. This is a metaphor for the ludicrous concept of alignment. www.offmessage.net/p/artificial...
“They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.”

Just as a private equity firm buys out a corporation and strips it for parts, a consultant class is raiding the Democratic Party and getting “generationally wealthy” along the way
New from me and @adambonica.bsky.socialnewrepublic.com/article/2163...
coffee was 6.50 in September, and already at 7 dollars. inflation is *really* picking up now. grocery shop today was 100 dollars, easily should have been 60-70 in the old times.
some imported items (e.g. dried fruit) just completely out of stock, on a weekday, not a weekend w/o shipments.
To quote @mcopelov.bsky.social, folks look at you like you're crazy when you say we're in the midst of the worst, most unprecedented Article I constitutional crisis in American history, & then it's Thursday.
Trump calls for Ilhan Omar to immediately resign & says, "please inform our great Speaker, James Michael Johnson that the Democrat Party has conceded her seat ... she will not be allowed to me a member of that body any longer"
Trump's crowd in Iowa then starts chanting "Lock her up! Lock her up!"
The New York Times wrote articles that were like "the impossible-to-characterize elusive politics of Elon Musk / he's lost interest in politics" right before he became *literally the largest GOP donor in history* the next election cycle. Twice. Two times!
The fact that the president's doctors are giving him the dementia test over and over again -- tracking his decline, most likely -- and that the president keeps bragging about having to take that test should be a five-alarm fire.
Trump: "You know, the first question -- they have a lion, a snake, a giraffe, and a bear. And they say 'which is the snake?' ... by the time you get to number five a lot of people are left out on the road ... I get no credit for it."
it would actually be tremendously helpful if elon decides to publicly pick a fight with democrats to the point that they can’t help but impose real consequences on him
I don’t think this is true, at all. If the Fed wants to lower inflation, it can do it in a pretty straightforwardly
What *may* be true is various other policy choices (and possibly private sector developments) are making the short-term unemployment-inflation trade off worse
“Trump’s second administration has constituted such a broad assault on American law and values that we will require something more than prosecutions: a society-wide initiative to deal with it.”
That’s right, and as @davidakaye.bsky.social writes, the time to start laying the groundwork is now.
we're going to need a long-term plan, with broad political appeal, for ending impunity & holding the trump administration accountable for its crimes, malfeasance & cruelties.
not 'tit-for-tat' but an american version of transitional justice.
my take in @slate.com 👇
My brain cannot process this level of corruption.
She was being paid $50 million to engineer a pardon from Trump *while working at the Justice Department* as a "Special Government Employee."
And it worked. He got the pardon, and she got the money.

As one of the candidates featured in these polls - the infamous one in late June that showed me plummeting into single digits (which was at odds with our internals) - here's the impact of this "experiment"
GREG IP: “.. make no mistake: If the only way to 2% inflation is to drain the lake of liquidity sustaining AI, the Fed has the means and, very likely, the will to do it.”

NVIDIA seems to be channel stuffing, forcing Amazon and other customers to take early delivery. The argument that these things are "scarce" when you don't even have anywhere to plug them into is nonsense...unless NVIDIA is saying you NEED to take them now, or else.
GPUs are stacked in warehouses.
Business Insider also reporting that Amazon projects it would take delivery of $3 billion a month in GPUs “every month for the foreseeable future,” all while not having anywhere to put them, as part of an “early rack receipt” program. Extremely strange!
Talarico: "We just found out that [Elon Musk] is almost single-handedly bankrolling this effort to install Ken Paxton in the U.S. Senate and defeat this movement...Elon Musk wants our land. He wants our water. He wants his very own personal United States senator. He is trying to buy Texas."
