The “build everything anywhere” bullshit at the heart of BAAJA never answers the Qs of build what, where, or why. It just lets capital & markets do as they will, subordinating the public interest to tech, energy, & finance oligarchs. And billionaires, like John Arnold.

Love this! I find that when I actually pay attention to which days we end up biking (my kid to school/me to work) we typically only walk due to cold in January and February. Fortunately we are not that far so can easily pivot to walking.

The fact is that data center construction is being held back by energy infrastructure and mining and other construction permitting, and with the passage of BAAJA, data center growth (and other polluting industry) will accelerate, increasing climate pollution.

1. The ratepayer protection provisions re: data centers in BAAJA are good but they are not an "aggressive accountability" measure. 2. BAAJA contains an array of concessions to radically accelerate the buildout of natural gas infrastructure that will power data centers.

84 new coal plants a year

KetAnthropic JoshAI@ketanjoshi.co

A new Bloomberg analysis shows ~3,000 MTCO2-e of extra US power pollution between 2025-2035 thanks to data centre growth. That is: = 84 new coal plants /yr = 33k lost jobs globally = 1.2m more ppl pushed into unlivable climate

As we think through the potential benefits and risks of the permitting bill, it's worth remembering that electricity is 18% of US final energy. Non-fossil electricity is 7%. Wind is 1.8%. Solar is 0.7%. The permitting bill would affect the whole energy industry. A big game with high stakes.
