My ex kept her college syllabi and she had one for a class on post-9/11 cinema and I’m curious if it discussed this series at all (despite the first one debuting before 9/11).
"9/11 reshaped Final Destination by rapidly and irrevocably reconfiguring audience sensitivity and receptivity to certain themes."

I had never heard of these books and as the essay notes this type of thinking wasn’t necessarily new in far right circles but these books certainly helped play a part in further seeding the soil for mass fantasies of revanchist violence
The books that helped plant the current violent, obscene brand of Christian nationalism in the public consciousness

I THINK one of the things we're really seeing is a continent, maybe industry-wide shift away from full-time employees and towards gig/codev work.
And that transition looks like layoffs across the board even from studios that just had big successes.
its very funny that there is now a claim that code is cheap because like.. you're still paying devs and now you're paying Anthropic too
if you were a solo dev, code used to be free, you weren't paying yourself, but now you pay Anthropic
code is actually more expensive now lol
Look, I know all the reasons we got here, but we really need to start seriously thinking about what we do in a world where The Markets punish whole countries for voting for decency, compassion, and fairness. We must stop pretending the capitalist machine is an objective, value neutral force.
This is the type of essay I really love and the type of thing I really wish institutional places with more resources (Atlantic, NYT, even Slate) would do more often yet they don't for some reason. So I had to start a site that talked about this kind of stuff.
To innovate, a genre known for protagonists escaping reality must begin to think more deeply about what "escape" means and its implications

I do think Typebar Magazine offers something very unique in that regard. If you like our approach, too, consider subscribing! Even a free sub helps since our newsletter is the key distro channel if Bluesky ever collapses so we need it as high as possible!

this is happening because big tech customer support basically doesn't exist and desperate people are asking ChatGPT what to do. ChatGPT is sending them to journalists
In the last few weeks i've been bombarded with emails from people who have minor tech support problems. ChatGPT is telling them to email me, writing their emails, and compiling "evidence packets" after convincing them they have stumbled on a major story:

And if they’re billing by usage then the AI companies have a strong financial incentive to make the models be as wasteful as possible with code (and everything) so the end user has to pay more.
The NBA has reached deals with Kalshi and Polymarket to make them the league's preferred prediction markets partners. The companies can now use NBA IP on their platforms, while the NBA gets right of approval on markets that they offer. That and more:

“Fixed” games (that is, referees or players acting in the interest of self-enrichment via gambling) are likely already commonplace but they will become harder and harder to hide. Eventually they just won’t!

Chat with a guy from Brazil periodically and after the election earlier he was still so faithful in Lula and that the movement behind him would turn everything around and they did. So happy for the people of Brazil
I don’t think a sanders 3rd party run in 2016 and 2020 would’ve delivered him the White House but things could literally not have turned out worse if he tried to dismantle the party from the outside but he fundamentally didn’t want to do that.

I think what broke me was sanders becoming a DNC capitulator and plugging the energy of his movement into the “destroy the energy of political movements” machine. He should not be remembered fondly! He ultimately sided with our class enemy!
This is what Love Lies Bleeding got right about the 80s: everything in the 80s wasn’t neon and bright colors and crazy prints. Everything was fucking Brown
That's the bit everyone gets wrong. They try to look like the 80s/90s and they pick whatever was in fashion or what was on TV show sets at that time. Most people lag about a decade behind whatever the furniture and decor trends are because they only buy stuff when they need to replace them.
Big tech obviously bears a lot of blame for destroying the online writing industry but a lot of publishers didn’t help themselves and don’t help themselves. I literally could not read the article! I got maybe 2 grafs in and browser crashed due to ad load. Oh well.
ive talked on how i wont engage with writers who use ai, i wont eat at a restaurant with an ai menu, i wont have anything to do with it. but what this post illustrates is regardless of how OTHERS react, ultimately the worst part about using ai is that you are punishing YOURSELF and dont even know it
I know they're very popular and I even think some of them do decent work, but I tend to block most of the big-name video clip journalists on here because they're farming outrage as much as they're informing
I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.
Some ground rules that have helped us:
- Go outside your bubble, try new social media channels
- Don’t underestimate the power of WhatsApp (although less so in the U.S.)
- Post on the Instagram grid, not just stories
- Watch every Instagram video until the end before sharing
- IGNORE THEM
After the first round elections, Congressman André Janones created a WhatsApp channel titled “Lula’s Army.” It ballooned to 10 million people following his commands on how to behave online to counteract Meta’s far-right-favouring algorithms. The right knows how to use socials. We must learn, too.

Then a different guy at the surprisingly busy Comcast store was all "who's your cell provider" & I was like "Google Fi but I just financed a Pixel 10a" & he was like oh if u had a time machine we could have saved u money & I said oh ok & then he said he just got the new $2k iPhone & I said oh ok
