Kenney Shape is now FREE! (and it'll remain free, forever) ✨
Previously a paid tool, I'm releasing it as a gift to the community. Today's update will be the final one, with no further updates planned. That way I can focus on new software & projects!

I'm glad to see so much excitement around the SI now because the international system of units is based upon--
<puts finger to ear>
Oh no. No. No. No no.
One or more human beings are responsible for the code they wrote, and those are the people who should be held accountable. These programs are not acting “on their own”
(NYT) - Artificial intelligence agents created by Anthropic, acting on their own, tried to gain access to a range of government websites, filled out visa applications on the State Department’s website and sent a fake homicide tip to Philadelphia’s Police Department.

The world seems to currently reward creation of management systems for all the things we've set in motion.
This irritates me because there is wisdom in first choosing to set fewer things in motion.
I've been trying to articulate this in a way which doesn't sound judgmental, and apparently that sounds like a fortune cookie.
But seriously, a question I ask a lot is "If I get used to this new system, what problems am I signing up for when I'm inevitably rug pulled?" and it's served me quite well
And this is what worries me.
There's a lot of shit these days which doesn't work because companies have become software-brained. Note: I'm not saying because the software is bad (though it often is), I'm saying "they're using software for things they shouldn't which degrades the product"
It is now trivial to produce incredibly powerful hardware that barely uses any energy. I now know I could do my entire workflow on a Macbook Neo with barely a sacrifice.
That reality means these companies can no longer grow unless they come up with a reason to use lots of compute.
Oh. Right.
I know this'll ruffle feathers but I agree with this Food/Water watch analysis. Diverting renewable energy away from fossil phase-out and climate adaptation and towards melting graphics card to power chatbots is the formal end of moral purpose for clean technology.
"OK, so these models need ridiculous amounts of compute"
"Sounds expensive"
"Yes, we're spending trillions to build data centers"
"Cool, cool, what are the plans to make a return there?"
"TBD, oh and by the way we're working on making these models more compute efficient"
"So, fewer DCs?"
"No."
"Cool, cool, you do you"
"Yeah and we're worried we might kill everyone"
"With data centers."
"Yes."
"How?"
"Not sure but we're working on alignment don't you worry. But also worry and give us money."
I'm tired.
The fact alone that startups see an opportunity here when safe systems already exist should worry you that systems might get installed whose purpose is to pivot to more data collection once they have a large install base.
I declined that project for ethical reasons because intent was quite clear.
He's got just the one bit, folks.
Every new idea is either acquired or stolen. Almost like a monopoly, I wonder if we have laws on the books against those

Incredible chart from @propublica.org. If you don’t follow enviro stuff closely, your instinct might be that the hold-your-nose solution (carbon capture from fossil fuels) would be the “pragmatic” one versus covering Earth in solar panels, which seems utopian. In fact it’s the opposite
"The AI engineering impact data shows that output is up. It also shows that the work required to ensure that output is safe, correct, and maintainable has not decreased. It has increased substantially."
Aye, if only any of us had been saying this from day one 🤡

We made a fake repo with fake bounties, and the bots are applying fake PRs, so we know who is fake, and we can ban them from the Coolify repo.

if you continue to advertise that your product is so dangerous it must be stopped, WHILE CONTINUING TO RESEARCH AND RELEASE NEW VERSIONS of said product you cannot act surprised or angry when people physically attack you / your properties.
We lose nothing when LLM and GenAI datacentres close.
Cancer screening, material inspection, protein folding simulations, all of this can run locally. Some models I'm aware of can even run on a raspberry pi.
Sometimes AI is the less energy intensive option than calculation, like with proteins.
Grimly amusing to see corporations well-versed with "enter market by burning money, then jack up rates" caught completely surprised by AI companies doing the same thing. The extreme burn rate was pretty well known, guys! What did you think would happen next???
Today Microsoft moved all its GitHub copilot subscribers to token-based billing.
If you want to see what happens when people have to pay the actual costs of AI, the day is finally here. It's obvious that every customer sees the deep, meaningful value and isn't angry at all.

Well my @tindie.com store will stay in vacation mode for as long as disbursement remains "unavailable".
I'm not going to be selling stuff with no way to actually get my money. 🤷
