Just add to this from an English perspective. Football is something you do with your feet. Having a ball in your hands has FA to do with feet. If you're shit at kicking a ball don't pick it up and carry on calling it football. Hope that's clear 👍.

""Football is something you do with your feet" I don't buy your premise. There is no evidence for the etymology of "football" (and there have been many many games called 'football' over the centuries). There as much chance that the origins of the name were based on the sort being played "on foot".

Maaaaan... You lot really can't help yourself finding new idiotic areas to disagree on - should we throw guttural savanna-speak from ancestral Africa in there too? 🤦‍♂️...

In fact, most of what is currently the western United States was actually Mexico and due to a thing called Manifest Destiny (which is colonizer for we take what we want) Then United States took that land, resulting in a war with Mexico in Texas. History is fun.

I’ve heard from so many people in my long life that they learned English due to the popularity of music and movies from the US. What MAGA is afraid of is young people wanting to learn Spanish as a second language due to Bad Bunny. Speaking a language leads to deeper understanding.

I started learning Spanish at 25 because I noticed the benefits. Besides, Spanish speakers learn English faster when an English speaker can mentor them. So in fact, I’ve helped more Spanish speakers learn English than any maga ever has. So ignorant.

Wish Americans would remember that not only do they"borrow"our language, their ancestors,if they're white, left England and were ALL IMMIGRANTS WHEN THEY ARRIVED on land they proceeded to steal from the indigenous people that already lived there.Slaughtering tens of thousands in the process!

The English have been treated so unfairly. We should demand compensation and levy tariffs of 800% on imports of Weetabix until such time as England imports more American words like WTF and LOL.

Columbus was an Italian who sailed under a Spanish flag. America was named after Amerigo Vespucci, another Italian who sailed under Spanish and Portuguese flags. English pilgrims didn't land at Plymouth Rock until 1620. So many indigenous languages have been suppressed or destroyed by Europeans.

Well, these days most of you speak American, not English. In English, we don’t begin sentences with: ”Me and…” Sorry, my mother was an English teacher.

American English is a stew of emigrated people's languages. Here's a 𝙨𝙢𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙨𝙖𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚: Fiancée, beef, salon (🇫🇷) Blitz, delicatessen, noodle (🇩🇪) Piano, pizza, opera (🇮🇹) Tornado, barricade, guitar (🇪🇸) Buoy, freight, yacht (🇸🇽) Czar, icon, vodka (🇷🇺)

And where the hell are all the non white people who Trump targets every day speaking up for Americans from Puerto Rico? American from immigrants as most all people. My family members didnt fight in war for racism, they fought for democracy and rights 4 all.

If were being technical the English colonized and by extension we as the descendants of English speakers eradicated the native languages of this land. Not so much borrowing, as catching the ole genocidal football from our forefathers and doing the icky shuffle in the native American endzone

In other parts of the world, they have to learn multiple languages and it makes them cultured. Here MAGAts are too stupid for that and cheer the ignorance of only having the ability to speak one language… poorly 🤣

When people harassed my friends that spoke English as a second language for not speaking perfectly I advised them to ask the bully how many languages they speak One was always the answer shut them up pretty fast Empowered my friends and helped take the sting out of the vile attacks

The only “real Americans” are Native Americans. As for Puerto Rico - my rescue dog comes from PR - if they are either too uneducated to know it’s part of the US or simply bigots, I’m pretty sure the citizens there would be delighted to be free of us.

The people raging about Bad Bunny and Spanish are just painting racist loser on their foreheads. They should be shunned. And that’s gonna be a lot of shunning.

Spanish is from Spain another European country. That colonized and had developed cities and towns before the Pilgrims made it to Plymouth rock after trying to escape religious persecution after they murdered a woman.

Spanish was spoken in what ended up being the US long before English. Calif used to be part of Mexico! And many of our iconic cities are Spanish names: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, San Jose, San Diego, Santa Clarita, Santa Ana, etc. Father Serra built 21 missions in California.

True. But, Native Americans were the first languages we know of here and then People from all over Earth came with their languages, so we don't speak proper English. We speak USA a combination of many languages, even though we try our best with English.

English is the bastard byblow of the languages of the Angles, Saxons, Frisians, Franks, Celts, Romans, and Normans. Whoever was on top and then pushed over and/or out left a little of themselves linguistically as well as genetically. It, as did the people that spoke it, survived by being adaptable.

This white supremacy crap has been aspirational from the beginning. We are not a Lilly white country with a culture and economy that results only from whiteness and never were. It’s a grifter’s framework (untruths sold to enable predators).

Scattin' and bobbin' that weave all over the place. Can you fucking believe that is actual presidential quoting you have there? How do his people listen and not laugh or cry? Idiocracy comparisons are a compliment at point.

The "English only" group forgets that English was not the first language of the first whites to arrive here! Portuguese, Spaniards, French, Dutch, Germans, came here before the British. Who knows which language we'd be speaking if not for British greed and imperialism?

These people don't know anything about History That's why it is so easy for Trump to lie to them. He is trying to convince them Hitler should have won World War II.😬🤬😬🍀🌹✌️

I had a class on the history of English and it was such an interesting class I kept the text. Diff dialects across our states, in most cases, is not bc of the King's English. 🤔

I would say to all the “English is precious, no other languages allowed in the U.S.”: 1) Between Spanish of Puerto Rico and literally 100s of Native American languages, English ain’t the only one and 2) study English language history. It is literally made up of pretty much every other language

Actually, Adam, the first settlers of the east coast of the US were English, so they spoke English . In Quebec they were French. In the southwest Hispanic…..but they lost the war

That occured to me as well. English is a mutt language which "borrows" most of its parlance from other languages. State names alone disprove linguistic purity tests, in the extreme. It's all so ignorant and dark. It'd be a blessing to live in a country where the populace had an effing clue.

We also borrow German and Spanish and Yiddish and Australian and Italian various Slavic and so on words and phrases. Not to mention music we’ve all danced or sung to, including Christmas carols. Don’t forget the Macarena which I doubt most people understand the words to

And we should spell it gaol, behaviour, grey, colour, and judgement (among many others). And the mail is the post, the front hood of the car is the bonnet and the trunk is the boot. And no more playing American football! Pudding is dessert, be it cake, pie, or actual pudding. Your sweater is a

And English came from West German, which came from Indo-European, which came from Proto-Indo-European. The world is far bigger than they will ever know, because education scares them.

The first language that was spoken in what is now the United States was a Native American. Many different tribes, some with like languages and signs but it was still the first languages here. English was brought from England by the white man.

Not to mention the fact that the Spanish had colonised the Americas way up into the southern half of what became the United states and US had native (albeit recently) Spanish speakers in situ when the UNITED states became the United states, so literally in places like Cali, Spanish before english.

English itself isn't "English only." Just look how difficult our spelling rules are! It's a mash up of several different language groups; Indo-European roots with Greek, Latin, and lately Asian influences. New words are coming in from all over! The 'English Only' crowd is basically ignorant AF.

Thank you for saying that! There are countless ENGLISH / British people visiting the USA who have been congratulated on how good their English is 🙄 and even asked what language we speak in the UK. 😱🇬🇧

Hi - I write a daily update on what’s happening in Minneapolis. It has details that are underreported (with sources) and reasons for hope. I post them on Facebook and just started cross posting to threads and bluesky. Please share if you’re able to help those outside of MN to stay updated!
