Note that Amazon already may have converted books to their newer .kfx extension, and you then *need to download from web if you want a file with the older extension. I'll take a look at this tonight, and see if that's still possible. Calibre 6.x (on a pi) tells me it cannot download kfx files!

Typing too fast - clarification: even though it may be an old book on your Kindle, bought years ago, it may already be converted into kfx format on your Kindle device. So if you want to keep it 'portable' for your own future devices, you know what to do.

All kindle books are downloaded & converted. Haven’t bought from them in over a year but hubby does. His books a weird but they are now my downloaded-screw-you-amazon weird books. Next up, audible.

I don't own a Kindle, but have delivered purchases to my iPad and read them through the Kindle app. Can they be deleted from my iPad? Or does it not matter since I'm reading in the app?

What do you use? I have a Kindle Scribe and Oasis (RIP, alas) but I’d really like to extricate myself from the Bezosphere. I’m definitely getting everything I can from Libby or elsewhere but still wasn’t sure about hardware.

I have a kobo libra color, it’s nice if you like things with color, but the tradeoff is the screen isn’t quite as perfectly clear. Pretty direct integration with Libby, even if it’s a little wonky.

i have a kobo libra colour as my main and a kobo clara bw as my smaller alternative. i was also an oasis guy and the libra has the page turn buttons, which is why i went with it

it's wild to me that amazon completely eliminated kindles with buttons - i guess we must be in the minority - but on the other hand i'm glad because as my oasis was slowly dying it got me off my ass to leave that ecosystem

I would say that about 90% of the ebooks I borrow from Libby work on my Kobo just fine. There's a screen on the Kobo that lets you set up the link between them. There are a few weird edge cases - newer books not being available yet, or sometimes I get a UK version (?) - but it's worth it to me.

the clara bw is the most "basic" of the newer lines - i think it's $140 new - so definitely look for a refurb of that one. they DO have refurbished older models on the kobo website - i think there's a nia for like 80 bucks. don't know much about it tho

i'm with you, and on top of that, e-ink color isn't even all that good yet. the only reason i bought the kobo libra colour is that it has physical page turn buttons, which i love

What about those of us who've only used the Kindle app? I've got over a 1000 comic books thanks to Amazon's destruction of Comixology, and when I try to download something, it keeps telling to I don't have a compatible device & to get the free Kindle reading app...which I already have on my phone.

Which is why one doesn't purchase digital copies of anything. Only the physical copy. Because business seems to forget that one doesn't purchase a product for a short time but permanently. Purchase DVDs, CDs, and books. Leave Kindle and whatever in the dust.

Yes DL now! 2 reasons actually- 1 you may want to use another device someday and won't be able to and 2- the regime may make them remove "questionable" content and it would be very good to have a backup. I downloaded all of mine today because my Kindle works now but it won't forever and fuck Amazon.

Go do the downloads now. Once you have the files you can break them later. Amazon doesn’t deserve the right to remove your books you’ve bought or to keep you from reading them.

Unable to download from macOS via the USB option as it tells me I don’t have a Kindle account, in spite of having a logged-in Kindle app open on a USB-connected iPhone. Maybe I’m missing something

I'll occasionally pull a book off a shelf that I first read when I was a school kid. Just having the collection on a shelf keeps the stories alive at a glance. I've never been able to embrace the e-reader, because it always feels like the stories vanish the instant I put it down.

I'm happy that they're doing this - I've been kinda-sorta planning on ditching my Kindle and going for a less-evil alternative, but the expected tedium of downloading all my books & transferring them made it easy to put off. Thank you Jeff Bezos for giving me a hard deadline!

A lot of replies are talking about the possible authoritarian motives that are behind this, such as having the ability to remove books from your devices or alter content without your consent. But greed plays a larger role here: to lock you into the ecosystem and make it harder to move to another.

Very interesting Andy. Amazon is losing sight of the fact it is a bookseller and if someone has paid for a book they should pass it along in any accepted format to be read by the customer. As an author I have to upload my finished file in Epub which they then convert for Kindle anyway. Unacceptable

I buy quite a bit from them in other areas too, and whilst me taking my custom elsewhere is totally insignificant, over time others might also feel the same way. They might have the monopoly online but there are other upcoming options.

I don't know if this works with newer kindles, but older ones can be hooked up to a computer with a USB cable and the book files can be pulled off it that way. (I sort of wish I'd realized that before I downloaded my library 1 book at a time off Amazon).

Same but I am not able to download my files as a back up. The error I get is basically you don’t have a kindle registered to your account. It says the app should also work for downloading but it doesn’t. I uninstalled and reinstalled and that didn’t help.

Omg, you're right! There's still a "Download & Transfer Through USB" option, but when I click it there's an error message "You do not have any compatible devices registered for this content. Buy a Kindle or get the free Kindle reading app." But I do have an app! Time to send a email to amazon.

It's like Andy Jassy wants us all to shop elsewhere. The only things I still buy on Amazon are ebooks and stuff I CANNOT find elsewhere. The big turn off for me was when he killed the Amazon Smile program. It wasn't much, but I liked that a tiny bit of my total went to my hometown library system.

How bout boycott some of Amazon's services ( as much as possible, I know Bezos is entrenched in our economy) and support local libraries through Libby. The only thing billionaires understand is money, and the only way as Americans we can affect change is through their pockets!

I buy paper books. For when the fascists try to rewrite them digitally or they ban libraries. I will protect my library like they protect their money. But with more grace and intelligence. And booby traps. Lots of booby traps. Don’t pick up Mein Kampf all I’m saying.

Said this elsewhere recently You DO NOT "own" the content, you only own the *media* If that media is digital, you don't "own" *anything* and have no inherent right to it Speaking for authors everywhere who don't just give away their work ps buy a real book next time ok?

I do this! I use Libby to download and read the books I want and support the author. If I really like the book, I download off z lib and throw my notes and highlights on it. Send to kindle and back up on USB flash. Been doing it for years now!

Thanks SO much for the heads up. I have about 300 books in there, so I'm now going to spend every spare minute over the next week downloading them all!

The kindle was the main reason I haven't been able to boycott Amazon. And now to discover I won't even be able to download them! Grr... evil oligarchs. I knew I should have just bought hard copies. Damn my bad eyesight and love of reading in the dark.

The book store is being a dick so we should all steal from authors. I get that "If buying isn't owning..." Is a great, catchy bon mot, but the logic is highly capitalist.

I never liked Kindle after all, but i stopped watching Prime Video after they made most of their library on rental and inclusion of sub-subscriptions. But lord. I already hate Amazon because you can't find decent art materials that don't cost like shit.

I, as a self-published author, am given the option to DRM my Amazon books or not. As far as making changes goes, I appreciate it if they push out the error corrections I make to published Kindle books. Errors are embarrassing.
