I know I am not the median voter. But when I watch Trump performances like the one we just endured in North Carolina, I can't escape the feeling that our problems go much deeper than "affordability" and we're whistling past the graveyard if we reduce our politics to that issue.

👋🏼 what he's doing is specifically manipulating mentally ill people. It's kind of like herding sheep. Propaganda works on smart people. My Nanna was born in Berlin in 1926. This is a mental health crisis - again. Manipulation of nondialectic thought is how you get a holocaust.

It's the issue that will resonate most with voters who do not pay attention to politics or even the news, and there are a lot of them. It's not the only issue, but in my humble opinion, we need issues that target the uninformed and the economy impacts everyone.

Economic insecurity was the euphemism in 2016 that really meant racist and idiotic voters that just wanted to be entertained by their blathering clown candidate.

Yes. When you hear Trump voters say that they will gladly pay $5 per gallon if it means Iran does not get a nuclear weapon, there is no salvaging those voters. They would never give a Dem that leeway. It’s the personality, not the principle.

True. Personally, I stick to the lesser evil principle. As a voter, we can’t always get we want, and sadly our voting system favors a 2 party state. It’s the reason why ppl continue to be hyped about IRV system. I’m excited about the rise of DSA

Candidates in the Primaries. I think they could do with better vetting. However, once you get to the general, it’s got to be either D or R. Ds are at least easier to be pushed, and better domestically.

The remaining Trump voters are too dumb to understand anything more complex. The only smart ones left supporting Trump are the ones craving power and money. These are not winnable. The people tired of spending $100 per tank of gas are possible. And yes, we are whistling past the graveyard.

100%! And I would add there is some shit going down that we have no knowledge of / ain’t got no idea about. I can’t help but wake up every day with dread. Fauxking scary time. Democrats- I swear to God if you don’t remove that man from office as you VERY FIRST ACTION you are as evil as him 🍊

Anyone who pulled the lever for president dumpster fire — whether once or twice or especially thrice — who isn't now wondering, "What the hell was I thinking?" is either malignant, moronic or some toxic combination of the two.

Our problems include an electorate that is about 45% instinctive fascist who only vote Dem when the Rethugs have harmed them deeply enough to overcome their aversion to good government and desire for government to be used to harm the Other. Their selfishness has to overcome their need to be hateful

I agree…this is literally an existential crisis…like in a fight for the existence of our democracy and rule of law. Unfortunately, so many don’t understand what that actually means for them in their lives…they don’t care until they themselves feel the pain. So sad really.

The problem is that part of our country has become fascist. Our job is the same job we took on in the 1940's - to destroy fascism and dig it out by the roots to end it, this time in America. It will require tribunals. It will require punishment. It will require that we commit to it's eradication

I think economic talk stands in for most other political discourse in our country. Why people believe an economy is bad (immigrants, the super wealthy, regulations, deregulation, home prices, etc) tells you more about what motivates them.

My entire family votes for Trump. Even though they are a bit angry w/ him now, they are very clear they will never vote Democrat. There is a hatred for Democrats that runs deep in them.

A mobster who has lucked into the biggest bustout in world history. We can hope that he's more concerned with living to enjoy his ill-gotten billions than he is taking literally everybody with him when it becomes clear he won't, but it's at best a 50/50 proposition.

The problem is there’s an alarmingly large percentage of the country who will vote for literally anyone no matter how incompetent as long as they’re an outspoken white nationalist

77 million people voted for this admin after living through his mendacity, incompetence, and corruption of his first term. Today, they cheer him as if he were an entertainer and blame all others for the failures of government. America is not a serious country.

The problem is that the truth, "voters, you fucked up bad, and that's why this is happening" is not something that said voters will ever accept. We have a frivolous, irresponsible citizenry, and that's a democracy killer no matter what.

They'll just think that he was doing great and then something unforeseen happened. And they will project onto how this could be Biden's fault. It will never occur to him that we had the whole world cooperating to keep Iran from getting nukes till Trump ripped that up because Obama.

I think you could make the argument that they were lied to. He said “no wars”. He said “I see your struggle”. Most of us also saw his toxic personality, but he did say populist things and we should acknowledge that and say he lied. We can do better.

I would accept that as an explanation for 2016 votes, but not last time. There was a record of Trump's performance in office, one that led voters to chuck him out in 2020. No excuse for 2024. Too many folks see their vote as a means of self-expression rather than hiring some one for a job.

the Democratic party lost to a pedophile with a corruption history that would make Satan blush the DNC completely failed against Trump, and even enabled him. I don't blame voters at all. Fuck Clinton and Kamala for losing against the biggest fucking ghoul on the planet

a large part of US population simply *is* the stereotype as portrayed in non-US media, and it's not really something any president or administration can change within 4 years but making channels like fox news/newsmax/etc. actually abide by some set of moral standards would be a big step forward

Dude, there is a Russian puppet imposter deliberately destroying the country. Weakening the military to a clown show. Making Americans poorer. Took away Healthcare for millions. People die. All for Putin. Everything benefits Putin. Its is so obvious. Putins plan from 1987 coming to pass. #KGB

My understanding of 2024 is that people thought Trump would bring more “affordability” than Harris. Now he has failed to deliver and they are turning on him. Am I missing something? They (the people who voted for him) only care about him being corrupt insofar as it costs them more money.

And yet we must. We have to find our way back together. Sorry to use the word (🙄🤭🤷) but we must be prudent in finding ways to communicate as a national community.

The Depression Era election in 1936 saw the Republican Party still getting 36% of the vote. The people at the rallies have always been amongst us. They just have an entertaining buffoon to tell them stories. The slower ones in the crowd believe them. The other just like triggering the libs.

I can’t remember where I read it but I saw an article recently that basically said 30-35% of every country’s population is just right wing racists. I agree that they have always been there. They are just more emboldened to speak up now.

Hitler still had about 20% support of thr Germans near the end of the war even though their country was destroyed (based on post war surveys and best guesstimates). Cults are a thing.

1/ The fundamental problem that Americans face is that your constitution was written by people who did not want political parties. That’s why they built a system of “checks and balances”.

Totally agree. If we hang our hats on only affordability issues, we will not come close to addressing the structural disaster that continues to unfold.

Posts like this discourage people who think voting is useless. They are part of the reason people just stay home. Journalists aren't supposed to drown hope. All the common person can do is vote, we have no control over how our politicians act or react.Hold the line.

The biggest problem in our country right now is the brainwashing by Fox News and their ilk. If you watch Fox you see that it’s almost a complete alternate reality now. The left is evil, the right is never wrong. And they never go off message. This is all the information these people consume.

Think of it like how racists see people of color. It’s not that they necessarily see them as bad people. They don’t see them as people at all. They might cheer on a black athlete or musician but they would never have them in their home. That’s how Fox has made them feel about anyone who isn’t MAGA.

Greed and corruption have a love child named Avarice. Dem pols that obey their leaders and consultants call this child “Affordability”. Vote out corruption, vote out greed!

Sanity alone is a start. But sowing cognitive dissonance whenever the pressure is on has been his lifelong focus and since it's also a fascist tenet that's how he became their leader and spokesman. And the dementia just adds to it. bsky.app/profile/atru...

I don’t understand why someone doesn’t just broadcast these speeches as anti Trump commercials. If voters that weren’t fanatics watched these, they’d recognize that he is a lunatic.

If you have the ability to see the existential problems we face beyond affordability, consider yourself lucky. But yes, we remain teetering. Precipitously. I still have faith that when something truly breaks beyond recognition, the country will pounce on him.

Dude I know this is happening because of the media. Right now they are debunking Trump's bs promises about the future of gas prices. I just watched the people behind him NOT clapping when they would have a year ago on a media channel.

Not just illiterate, but contemptuous of their neighbors & their kids. Americans chose to not have basic work/life benefits or healthcare b/c someone undeserving might get it. 13 states have paid family leave 8 have school meals 4 have U pre-k 3 have public option healthcare 46 have open carry.

More so an electorate that chooses to be morally bankrupt they’re not illiterate…so don’t blame the media because there’s plenty of media doing good work but folks just choose to follow the media that confirms their biases!

If you just watch CNN, ABC, NBC but there’s more media out there other than them and with video you get info direct out of the subjects mouth so the idea is get your info from many sources CSpan, ProPublica, PBS, AP and other media and always corroborate anything on social media with many sources

Politics are reduced to that bc a good portion of US citizens are too stupid to understand the ramifications of what is occurring & only care about $. 54% read at 6th gr level. 21% completely illiterate. The problems have been deeper for decades. They're just catching up & finally becoming visible.

I'd argue that the regime is either wholly incompetent or utterly unconcerned with the lives of normal Americans. Or both. And they think they can jury rig and intimidate their way to remaining in power. The question is whether the electorate understands that. I have my doubts.

I also have really been thinking about how a HUGE part of the country pays zero attention to politics. While many are that way by choice, I think I have really been underestimating how many people have no idea what’s going on anywhere because they are literally in survival mode.

I don’t have any answers for what to do about that except we must vote in huge numbers for candidates that aren’t bought-off and believe that survival mode-ing citizens need healthcare too.

It's the racism that attracts them and he has nothing else to offer. Every time I hear him say "our country" I'd like to remind them that no one named Trump fought or died in any war in our history. The immigrants destroying the country are Murdock from Australia and Musk from South Africa.

Yes, affordability matters, but the truth is it’s no surprise Trump got reelected; he is hatred personified. If our republican survives his regime, the only way forward will be by holding him and his enablers accountable, and finally addressing the racism and other isms at the core of the US.

DEMS may know "Affordability" is absolutely the #1 issue that wins us veto-proof majorities in House & Senate. AND THAT IS THE ONLY GOAL in NOV. The other issues we face will be handled WHEN WE WIN. Prioritize messaging & KEEP IT SIMPLE - THAT is American politics. Like GOP: KISS ! #VoteDem🗳️

Spot on! When 30% of us think that he’s doing great/will still vote for GOP, or when voters only care when their wallets are affected, we have a much deeper problem than the cost of living, data centers, & healthcare. Our society is rotting & it’s rotting from apathy & selfishness.

Agree, however, "affordability" is one of the few things that makes it real for some people, especially rural people and farmers who voted for Trump. Hopefully it's real enough to act as a smelling salt. 🤞

there are many more things we could definitely be running away with. data center is so easy & no one wants them. ai regulation. ripping down whatever trump puts his name on. international relations are a mess. tariffs. now they want a shit ton more money for bombs for isreal, the list goes on, on, o

every system is broken. i feel like we can't go back, bc there's nothing to really go back to. we must move forward, but to most of us forward, also means true accountability. i feel like almost everyone repub in congress is going to get a pass, which really angers me. they are all traitors, 4 real

It’s exactly the same in the UK. It makes me shake my head every single day in despair. The realisation that the majority of voters are not that bright, and have been weaponised by the likes of Trump et al. While deep down they know they won’t make things better, but do it anyway to be spiteful.

How about the fact that Trump probably has a built-in base or at least 1/3 of the electorate - no matter what? The worst thing about Trump is what he says about -us-.

The problem is the right wing media. They have intentionally lead the country right off the cliff! What’s happening now is a result of years of propaganda and lies orchestrated by the ultra wealthy to facilitate their desire to take over the country. We the people should destroy them!

Sad to say America has jumped the shark. You don't elect a human wrecking ball like Trump and go on as if everything is normal. We're not coming back from this. He's all our problems rolled into one.

WTH - I’m Gen X with an IQ of 122. And an even higher EQ. I never voted for this man and have been fighting since 2016 to remove him Stop labeling people. It isn’t “old people”. If you can’t back it up statistically, stop.

The median US voter recoils at the idea of paid vacation and has never been outside of the country. The median US voter wants high wages, low prices, spends a fortune on holiday tchotchkes, pickups & toys and then buys the cheapest, shittiest food possible.

The US median voter can’t explain “socialism” but hates it, would rather pay $100 out of pocket than $80 in taxes, hasn’t read a book since grade school, feigns support for gun control but votes for those who loosen gun laws and wants a congenial game show host for a president that drinks beer.

Americans are self absorbed, greedy, have a vacuum of critical thought and contempt for their neighbors & their kids. It’s why the US routinely re-elects the party that tanks the economy & is no closer to having the basic work/life benefits that civilian DoD employees & their families oddly get.

i disagree. i do not believe the average American has the intellectual capacity to feel that way. That's what the problem is. Most "independents" vote for the party opposing the one holding executive power when their lives don't materially improve which is nearly every time.

The problem is the "throw the bums out" mentality with absolutley no plan or policy position beyond that because well, knowing a policy would require effort and time, and that would require turning off Netflix and reading something, and that is just asking too much!

And that’s why I’m scared to death that we won’t be able to turn this shit around anytime soon. I really hope I’m wrong… someone, please tell me I’m wrong! 🥺

I watched the HBO show “The Man Must Burn” a documentary on the Burning Man festival. A black man from the mountains of western North Carolina, and a veteran, wanted so badly to get away from the rabid racism and unfettered loyalty to Trump where he lives. He went to the festival twice.

🎯🎯🎯 I have similar thoughts/concerns. If diesel price were $2, instead of $6, I fear a significant portion of American voters would be OK with the ongoing corruption and moral depravity. How can democracy and people’s freedom be preserved long term with these type of voters?

Yes, America is essentially a case of poor education, undiagnosed cognitive issues, ignorance, sloth, xenophobia, sheer stupidity in excess and an inability to stay in one's lane and shutting the f*ck up. We need a major overhaul.

Our problems are deep and wide, but not uniform. Affordability is not a singular issue, but it is a common thread. Dems will not win if we try to nationalize every issue. That how Beto lost his TX races. We need to localize every election and address what's important to individual constituencies.

"Corruption" proved a winning message in Hungary. Ds must encourage folks to understand that the damage that the Whitehouse, Congressional Rs, and their billionaire enablers have caused, will take years, maybe decades, to undo !

When the worst of us has been elevated to a position usually occupied by an individual with human-like values, and a modicum of respect for fellow humans, we should rigorously be re-evaluating how we got here, and quickly strive to right the ship.

It's much deeper. Affordability is one thing, we know the dollars we have just don't go as far. But the corruption and the possibility of even loosing our rights as free speech and voting are also lurking. Even regulations that keep us safe are at risk. So yes, the problems are much deeper...

Yes, yes, yes! Of course affordability is an urgent and painful issue that needs to be resolved. However, the damage of what Piggy Trump and SCOTUS are doing and have done to our constitutional processes is truly grievous damage that will substantially affect our futures and our children for decades

Our problems go directly to lack of... (say it with me) ACCOUNTABILITY! You guys, the amount of laws broken by Republicans is off the charts. ACCOUNTABILITY!

I think it's fair to say that multiple aspects of what's happening in the U.S. are showing themselves. It's like a mobile - when one part is pulled the others move too. It's all interconnected.

Also, everything we know is not the entire story. It's much much worse. This administration has perfected cover-ups. Whether it's the war, AI, corporate payoffs, ICE and the list is enless.

Loss of trusted allies replaced by Russia and North Korea. That's a problem with long-term consequences, perhaps not yet apparent to maga devotees and hopeful sycophants in Congress.

You're right. But if gas prices are what motivates some voters to turn against Trump and the rubber-stamp Republicans, that's fine. If it's the fact that he's an amoral degenerate, a corrupt demagogue, and a moron who clearly has lost whatever tiny bit of mind he ever had, fine.

I can't believe the way trump just keeps lying about how great the economy and everything else is, like that's going to make it a fact. He's either knowingly deceiving the population, or he's so demented he doesn't even know what falls out of his mouth.....

Yes, the next D President and Congress is going to have to pass the laws that make another Trump much more unlikely, and that means anti-corruption laws, rolling back SCOTUS's immunity decision, and reforming the courts themselves. They need to address the crisis & Ds have to start saying so.

Aaron, we’re suffering from a decades-long implementation of planning by the Koch’s & others of their ilk to make liberals, science, education, unions, government, etc, toxic to a plurality of voters while demoralizing minorities & the left. Our side has been reacting and fighting over power. 1/

Neoliberalism was a path to money and power, if a few families and working people benefited that was great, but not required. They sold us “too big to fail” as an excuse for bailing out rich donors. I may be a bit bitter, but I’m not apologizing for that.

I fear too many people think this ends when the man is out of power, when what we need is a generational cleaning of the house of modern conservatism out of every lever of power and influence

Yes, I think people are so bogged down in the day-to-day shit show that they haven’t come up for air to realize politics are never going back to what they were 20 years ago. Not that 20 years ago was perfect, but there was some bipartisanship.

There was bipartisanship because Congress and politics was run almost solely by white men. Once others got elected and involved that shut down very quickly

You’re right. A thorough housecleaning is in order. Yet another problem is that the Democrats need a transformation. Not as much as the other party, but it’s hard to say that they will be ready to build something good from the ashes and rubble in ‘29
