If you search "Jemima" on here you can see hordes of people screaming that she's a Nazi, and even some trying to carry out amateur genealogy on her family tree, all for saying that their preferred social media platform isn't a perfect utopia. Wild! (2/11)

The strangest thing is that people seem to be angry about several things she didn't argue: 1. That Nazis should be allowed on BlueSky 2. That X remains better than Bluesky (3/11)

I don't think #1 really needs explaining, but on #2: she actually concluded that a theoretical digital town square (which no longer exists precisely because of Elon) would be preferable to all these little walled gardens. Maybe this should’ve been more explicit given widespread confusion! (4/11)

A big irony here is that Elon and his minions have actually dunked on Jemima for a past column (presciently!) saying that he has turned twitter into a dying platform! (5/11)

The most important "British context" is that for self-important intellectual masturbators in Britain, transphobia is regarded as "brave truth telling that should be rewarded" and on BlueSky that same transphobia will get you yelled at and socially ostracized. That's what she's complaining about.

I'm one of those Brits that has moved across in earnest in the past six weeks. It's nice over here, I wish it had more people who engage with financial journalism, but hopefully that will come. But Jemima has a point on the echo chamber, particularly i/r/t the glorification of block lists. (7/11)

I saw someone last night accuse Jemima of being a "crypto booster". This seemed odd given how lots of the crypto community despise her for critical columns, such as the one screenshotted below. I then realised that people had erroneously labelled her a crypto promoter in various block lists (8/11)

It's great to have tools to better block abusive folk and this is obviously developing in response to what a cesspit Elon's X has become. But if you're blocking people not even for what they believe, but what you mistakenly think they believe, then that's not great! (9/11)

So you're arguing not for a right to speak, but for a right to force people to listen. Bluesky is as much of an echo chamber as you make it. There are plenty of conservative voices here. What there aren't many of are trolls, and that's because Bluesky recognizes no right to force people to listen.

A lot of British people on the left like me moved here over a year ago when it became clear how deeply Musk was going to impose his ideological position. We live in very different worlds in the same country.

I do not feel obliged to engage with anyone I don't want to engage with, and in the same way that I will put on my noise cancelling headphones for some lairy man at a bus stop, I will do the digital equivalent here. I already live in a world full of sexist right-wingers, thanks.

Anyhow, nobody is going to subscribe to your website for posh cunts by shaming us into, IDK, letting the Nazis back in our lives and conversations. We will just never take the Financial Times seriously. Not that I did before.

We're literally just going back to ignoring dickheads like you before Leon took over the other site you seem to think isn't fulla Nazis nobody wants to advertise to. Just talk like this in person and try not to get shouted at. It's not an echo chamber, you've just normalized being a fascist online.

I mostly agree with your defense of the piece and criticisms of Bluesky's reaction, but if you can deny the unintended hilarity of "Stokes Newington Drinks Party" I'm not sure the internet is the place for you. It's amazing. Making fun of something like that should binds all of humanity

I suppose we wouldn't have mocked her very insular British references as much if the whole piece hadn't been her lecturing *other* people for their siloed perspective and if she hadn't made a point of pushing her parochial references on us in screenshots of a firewalled article.

I reckon some people are coming here like scout ants, and like scout ants, you have to make the place unwelcoming to them, or they bring the entire nest with them and they eat through the foundations of the whole house!

Well that would be a great shame, as I think we provide a great perspective on US news from a more international standpoint. But some of our columns from British columnist understandably use British frames of reference. Americans do this all the time too, we just tend to be used to googling them! 🤪
