Journalists have a duty to tell the public that the president and his aides are seriously considering suspending habeas corpus *when it is happening* rather than saving it for a book rollout over a year later

BREAKING: New from Haberman and Swan: Secret memos show that the Trump White House debated last year, to a greater degree than previously known, whether to limit a constitutional right — suspending habeas corpus rights for undocumented immigrants to accelerate mass deportation efforts.

"Federal courts have repeatedly ruled that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has violated the right to habeas corpus by unconstitutionally detaining noncitizens and defying direct judicial orders"

Haberman profits off slow rolling mild critiques of fascism while doing nothing to prevent fascism with actual serious reporting. She’s done this for her entire career and it’s incredibly profitable unfortunately.

The issue with access reporting is incentives. We need to shift the incentives so that this kind of reporting is no longer wildly profitable. We need to incentivize real reporting.

And to be clear about Maggie and access journalism, it is in no way just her. She simply is one of the more annoying agents of the game who increasingly asserts that she does this because she cares about democracy 🥴

Let's all close our eyes and imagine what would have happened if Woodward and Bernstein had waited to have a book published.... Haberman and Swan have a platform called The New York Times where this could have been published swiftly. This is shameful.

I don’t understand how anyone subscribes to the NYT or WP for this reason alone. You’re paying people to investigate stuff that they want to sell you! If you’re not getting a free copy of the book, they’re just stealing from you!

Awww, but think how compelling it is to read (comfortably, in one's own home) about how one's neighbors are disappeared--and how profitable for the publisher, too!

The pattern of democracy dying in memoirs instead of headlines is fascinating and terrifying. There's a whole psychology behind why people stay silent during the moment but spill everything once it's "safe" to publish.

Haberman is not a journalist. She peddles puff pieces for access and then flaunts her value to be the precise access gained through nefarious means.

100% agree, David. I lost any respect for Haberman long ago as a result of this. It's not the first time she'd done this, and it won't be the last.

Benefit of the doubt. They might not have known it at the time. They might not have been able to confirm it until recently. It's not exactly news that the administration was trying to do this. Now we know more about it. From May 2025: www.pbs.org/newshour/pol...
